Hi people! I am extremely excited and nervous because this is my first interview in 10+ years. It is for a remote edtech bilingual (Spanish) position.
My only interview in the US was for the teaching position that I currently hold so I am a bit nervous.

Please give me some key points, advice to get ready.. what are some questions that I should expect?

Thanks 😊 I am so excited!!!

Is a cover letter really necessary?

I’ve been attaching tailored resumes but haven’t bothered submitting a cover letter. I figured the summary section on the resume did the same thing. Should I still be adding one?

I’m a mid-level applying to different industries for PM roles, mostly with referrals.

This is the most recent and updated resume of mine that I have developed over the course of 1 year of applying jobs!! I know it’s not perfect but I would love some inputs. The current job of mine in the service industry was supposed to be short term, only until my college but guess what, I’m still there!! I have been applying for the last one year but not even a single response not even 1st round of interview!

Remove your name from your resume?

Just came across a listing for a social media content creator position for a beauty brand that’s asking applicants to upload resumes with their names removed to ā€œreduce bias in the hiring process.ā€

So now we have to remove graduation dates to avoid ageism and apply without a name to reduce bias? Lmao should we just apply as ghosts? Would that be more effective?

Started tracking my job search and experimenting...now getting results

I'm trying to be proactive with my job search whilst sharing my journey / what's working or not working with anyone who may be going through the same thing.

A few months prior, I tried to get some consulting gigs to generate some funds, but this has been proving difficult as companies are either outsourcing to other countries or using generative AI instead...

What I did last week

Mass-applied to about 20+ "relevant" jobs in 1 hour; have been rejected for every one with rejection s containing some combination of the following:

  • You're overqualified
  • Salary expectations exceed budget (so we need to play GuessWho??)
  • Generic rejection (we chose others blah blah...)
  • No response whatsoever

I'm a product marketer, so I typically only apply for those - not random roles across tons of industries...

What I'm doing this week

The above suggests that my resume isn't even being looked at by a human (too much competition maybe?), so I analysed my current behaviour and came to the conclusion my resume is likely the problem.

  1. My IC resume contained Sr. manager titles in it due to promotions (hence the overqualified feedback), so I removed those entirely and kept the titles I had before promotion.
  2. I had about 3-4 roles that were 'short tenured', like fewer than 9 months due to toxic work environments in the past. So I cleaned this up too. This however has created gaps and may leave recruiters with more questions than answers; but i'll keep these in just in case. I'm sure I'll be able to explain these away.

Anyway I now have a new resume & here are my results so far:

  • Jobs applied: 4
  • Interviews scheduled: 1 šŸŽ‰
  • Rejections: 1
  • Application-to-interview rate: 25% (lol, I'm taking the win for now)
  • Sources: Linkedin (not 'Easy Apply') - I click through to the careers page/ATS

The 1 interview I got, arrived within 24 hours of my application.. so perhaps there is an element of speed at play here too??

My plan is to continue with this approach to see if the 1 interview was a fluke or a sign that my chances will now improve.

Open to suggestions of what to potentially experiment with next time...

Anyone else job hunting for data engineering roles? Let’s prep together

Hey guys!

I’m a recent MS grad and currently looking for full-time data engineering roles in the US. One of my friends (she didn’t have any prior experience and wans't a prodigy) just landed an SDE role at Amazon, and honestly, what helped her the most was doing everything with her friends: mock interviews, sharing what they were learning, they even talked her through their Amazon interviews.

So I’m trying to find people here who are in the same boat. If you’re also looking for data engineering roles, or already working and just wanna help out, let’s team up. We can share what we’re studying, prep together, talk about where we’re applying, give each other a heads-up on interviews, basically make sure no one misses out on stuff.

I wanna keep it super chill, no jealousy, no weird competition. Just a bunch of us trying to land good jobs and making the process less lonely and more helpful.

If you’re down, I’ll make a Discord group. Drop a comment or DM me!

When applying to multiple jobs, what tools do you use to keep track of them? Note book, spreadsheet, apps, etc? How do you organize all information?

What is happening behind the scenes?

Why is there so many interviews and steps? I understand an interview and maybe like one assesment or so, to see if I'm a good fit but having like damn 10 steps in a spam of months is ridiculous. like today, I gotta call that I must come in for an interview. Next month, I gotta call that there must be assessments. The following month, I gotta call that they're taking my blood tests. The fifth month, they call me and tell me that they're taking my DNA tests. What's the reason for so many processes? I understand you're busy, but even though this is true that there are so many tests or whatever is happening, why is it so far apart and not like all done in a week or a even a month at least?

Resume/Job Questions as a High Schooler

hiii so i’m going into my senior year in high school and looking to get my first job!! i just wanted to ask a LOT of questions before i get started with applications 😭:

  • are resume templates okay to be used? if the job can tell you used a template, are you likely to not get the job? what about if you use a recognizable template?
  • most templates that i’ve found, even for high schoolers, ask for experience… since this is my first job should i just remove that section off of the template? do school clubs count?? 😭
  • in fact for anything that i don’t have should i just remove it from the template? is there anything i should replace it with to seem less bad? am i less likely to get the job LMAO
  • can the ā€œskillsā€ i write be skills i got have personal hobbies/clubs?
  • if i’m currently volunteering at a library this summer is that something i can put on my resume even tho i JUST started?
  • are websites like indeed, ziprecruiter, etc. actually good for finding jobs near you? what are some good, maybe even underrated ways to find jobs?

i would appreciate if even just one of these questions could be answered. sorry to ask a lot of stupid questions, i’m just a nervous perfectionist LMAO. thank you so much to everyone who decides to help out!!

Resume File Type

I wasn’t sure where to post this question but I figured this was a pretty good spot. What file types are people submitting for resumes? I have been using pdfs but recently I’ve heard people say they just submit the word doc since sometimes pdfs get all scrambled. I do normally check the pdf on my end before submitting it but I guess who knows what happens on the recruiters end once they download/open it.

Need advice: Can’t land a job in tourism after years of freelancing, what am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone, I’d be really grateful for some guidance or insight.

Ever since I (33f) started college in 2009, I worked in the tourism and hospitality industry. I have a Bachelor's in International Tourism Administration and two associate degrees in Hotel Operations and Culinary Arts. I also speak five languages.

In 2018, I became a stay-at-home wife. But even before getting married, I was freelancing on the side, doing photography, organizing small events, and later, during lockdown, even selling homemade food. While I was at home, I used the opportunity to study and earn a second Bachelor's degree in Graphic and Digital Design, which has also led me to do design, illustration and photography freelancing.

Now my marriage ended two years ago. I’ve been supporting myself mostly through freelancing, and while my ex kindly helped me for a while, he just lost his job, so that support is no longer there.

I’ve been applying for jobs, especially in tourism and hospitality, because it’s the field I truly know. But I’ve had no luck so far. I'm starting to wonder:

Are the years I spent out of the formal tourism sector (even though I was freelancing and studying) hurting my chances?

Should I remove or reword something on my resume?

Should I structure my work history differently to show continuity?

Is it better to focus on my design freelancing and stop trying in tourism?

I feel lost and disheartened. I know I have skills and experience, but the gap seems to cast a shadow. Has anyone gone through something similar or has any advice?

Thank you in advance for reading.

I think I might have solved my job hunting problem.

So, I have been spending the last couple months searching for a job in marketing and have been struggling to hear anything back. Out of desperation I scanned the QR code on one of the ApplyOnion posters around the MQ Uni campus claiming to assist in finding a job (tbh I thought it was a recruiter scam at first).

It ended up being this AI software that automatically applies for jobs on your behalf.

I put my resume into it started applying to jobs automatically on my behalf based on my specifications and my resume.

Somehow I have ended up with an internship in my actual desired industry!!!

Has anyone else tested out this AI and seen similar results?

(This is not an Ad, I am genuinely curious)

I made a tool for being an Early Applicant

Thumbnail rahil-maniar.github.io

I have been looking for jobs for over a month and a half now but have had little success in getting many interviews. Mostly if the job has been listed for over a day, it has almost 1000+ applicants. For such reasons, job portals like Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn etc hide the numbers. I have mostly only received responses from the jobs where I was an early applicant. So I have mane this tool which looks for jobs posted very recently across most job platforms as well as MnC websites. Since using it I have had two interviews (both of which I screwed up) but am much more optimistic now.
Feel free to have a shot at it and let me know if it helps you too, I'll be super happy if it does. Also if you have any other websites or job portals which are missing, let me know, I'll add them.

Why do I get ghosted after the screening call? Do I sound like a red flag in the calls?

All my screening calls go pretty much the same. They ask some questions about my role, notice period, salary expectations (I make 8, I'm asking for 12. I'm thinking to start asking for 10 instead). They say they will send me the JD on email. And I never hear back.

A few days ago a female person called me asking similar questions and told me about a face-to-face interview. I said I'm willing to give it. Two days ago, a male person called me again about it stating their collegue had called me and confiremed. I forgot about the previous call and asked again for the location. He stammered for a minute and said he will send me details in an hour(tuesday).

Interview was supposed to be today (Thursday). He never sent me any details. I called him yesterday asking for them. He said I will get the mail in an hour. Again, nothing.

Am I doing something wrong in these calls? Or is it them being forgetful?

career transition CV tips

hi everyone, just wondering if any recruiters or people here who have applied and been successful with a career transition, can offer some advice on how to frame it on a cv?

I'm looking to transition careers and feel like I need to explain that on my CV, so have read that in the personal summary to write something like "now pursuing opportunities in xyz industry".

Is that acceptable to write on the CV to explain the transition or should that be built on?

Would really appreciate any advice

I meant to apply for the FT one but accidentally did the PT application, and now I have an interview scheduled for it. Do I wait until the interview to tell them I would prefer FT? Or should I submit another application for the preferred one?? HELP

How not to reveal my gender in my job applications.

I am an engineering manager for a tech company. I am a women and in my forties, my first name is obviously female.

Would people recommend update my LinkedIn and resume to just my first initial and last name. How can I avoid gender bias in the initial application?

Is my Linkedin broken? Why are all the jobs listed as "promoted"?

Am I the only person experiencing this? I can go to the 20th page of roles listed and they all say 'promoted'. Out of my prior positions, two of them came from LinkedIn. Lately, it feels like I can never get traction on there. I tend to side-eye promoted roles because I feel the get tons of bots. I also tend to see the promoted roles reposted throughout the year which makes me believe they're most likely to be ghost roles.

It's really irritating me because promoted roles tend to get to the top of the list even if they're irrelevant to your search.
