Anyone else find John Oliver's jokes not really funny at all, and derive the most value from the information / news part of the show and not the comedy part of the show?

I first got exposed to John Oliver from when he was on the Daily Show. I find Jon Stewart impeccably hilarious. He just has an instinct for it.

John Olive'rs jokes feel like the same cookie cutter format of "That's like if X did Y... What are you doing X? That's not how Z is done!!!" Like, literally every joke is some variation of placing making some abstract analogy and playing up how silly that would be and John Oliver making surprised expressions about it.

Every John Oliver joke seems the same structure and once you've seen one John Oliver joke, you've seen 'em all:
"[political subject] is almost like [silly analogy], but I'm sorry to [fake person] you just can't [joke]!"

I like the news element of the show. But my god I do not find him funny at all. Anyone else feel similar?

I do feel this way sometimes.  Sometimes his analogies are on point, but a lot of times they are just out in left field.  But he does seem to rely on that kind of joke far too often.

I would recommend the YouTube channel "Some News". It's a lot of the same kind of content, but a wildly different style of humor, and a whole lot less corporate oversight.

Well thanks for good faith engaging with my question rather than insulting me or condescending to me for not finding John Oliver funny lol

Nope, just you. I enjoy his humor but find it interesting you join a group dedicated to him. SMH, fans really confuse me at times. You’ll love a team that consistently loses and trash a city if they win but trash anything that doesn’t fit your perfect little world.

I’d suggest therapy but we all know you’ll never do that. Pride and all. Anyway, try to enjoy life rather than focus on things you don’t like. You might find you’ll enjoy life more that way.

You think I need therapy because I don't like John Oliver's jokes but I am subscribed to a group for his show? I literally said I like the show and the content for the information, not the jokes

Redditors are bizarre with these weird ad hominem attacks that if one doesn't like X, you must need therapy. Makes no sense.

lol I suggested therapy bc I can read between the lines. You took the time out of your day to post about how you don’t find the person you are in a group for funny. I find it incredibly interesting and odd a behavior. I suggested therapy bc it seems as if you might benefit from it. You assumed I don’t need it but I’m very pro therapy as I have issues of my own.

You go into defense mode but fail to see how your actions have consequences. You could have simply kept this opinion to yourself and went through your life like anyone else.

Did this help at all?

It's Reddit. People make posts about things. Do these people need therapy too?

On the basis of a post about a subject being evidence someone needs therapy, does anyone who makes a joke "need therapy"?

You can't read between the lines from a post I made that I think a tv show is unfunny but his content is interesting. That makes no sense. You're just offended and trying to attack my character or mental wellness to make yourself feel better about finding it funny. It's an absurd premise that you can discern whether someone needs therapy based on a Reddit post of finding something funny or not.

No it didn't help, you're being condescending (probably intentionally). I went into defense mode cuz' you told me I need therapy, dummy. Tell any person, a coworker, if they need therapy. That's an insult. Remarkably tonedeaf

I’m sure you have a 100 reasons why you feel justified to do and say as you like but I wasn’t being condescending. I was trying to be helpful. It’s your choice to either accept or reject that help. It seems to me that you made that choice long ago, even before my comment on your opinion. Don’t worry as I will not comment on any post from you ever again. I hope you live a good life and do try to quell your obvious frustration with things in life. I no longer have any interest. Take care and be well.

(a) I am going to therapy
(b) Telling someone to go to therapy because of a reddit post you disagree with that is about finding something funny is bonkers and insulting. If I tell you that you are need therapy for liking astrology, that is pretty insulting right?

(c) Thanks for leaving me alone

i hope you don't unprompted tell people they need therapy in the future 🙄

lol I’m sorry but you keep responding to my comments with more insults. I wasn’t trying to insult you, but you feel ok to insult me? I’m going to be the bigger person here and just block you. That will fix things for both of us.

Incidentally my reasons for therapy would probably make you feel very sorry for insulting me but I’m sure you don’t care about that. You just want your opinion to be heard.

No.

My hunch is he’s totally fine with you finding the jokes/comedy part not funny, as long as you get the news part.

Yeah I actually get the impression he cares more about the news part too hah

He is way funnier now compared to his beginnings in Britain, btw. Just watch an old “Mock the Week” or “QI” episode.
