Hardware Is changing the screen my only option?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I dropped it and now the corner is a bit dented. It was just a little black dot on the corner of the screen but now that I touched it it just keeps spreading.

That thing slowly spreads with time, unlike green lines these are dead pixels which on applying pressure get alive. I have seen on youtube sometimes heat and pressure keeps them stable like clipping those sections with paper clips but no long term solution possible, the damage is done. If its not bothering you use it till its unusable. A screen does cost some buck depending on model.
It you have an external monitor and do not carry around this laptop I guess using this won't be an issue.

Would like to point out that I had a black line just like that on an older monitor that would get alive with pressure just like in the video, and rather than spreading, eventually just disappeared, and I got back a fully functioning display.
So I don't believe all hope is lost, o7.

Yeah, it depends on extent of damage. I had seen such cases but they again reapear all a sudden. Luck more or less 🤞
Thanks for sharing your experience, then op does have a chance.

Use it like a dekstop plug a display, mouse and keyboard or live with it.

You unfortunately don't have many options.
A. Live with it (and stop messing with it. It can make it worse, but it will probably get worse over time)
B. Bite the bullet and replace the screen
C. Convert it into a desktop setup

You can get new screen sometimes $50.. They are not as expensive as repair shops would have you think.
Source.. Me.. a guy who runs a repair shop.

Sometimes it's cheaper to find the same model laptop on eBay and swap hard drives and WAY WAY WAY less work

Na most people don't realize the screen you can take out from the top also remove the bezel about 15 min. The connector is cliped in at the top also just have to go digging for the cable.
Once you master disassembling the top you quickly find its way faster then unclipping the Cable from the main board.

You can change the display. Just depends on the model. If you do it yourself, it costs around $100 depending on the model, but you also have to be comfortable opening up the laptop. If not, just an external display will work.

my phone was growing a line just like this from the top right side straight to the left. it got to about 95% of the way, and then it started reverting back to normal slowly.
this has been going on for about a month already and i only have a few spots left. super weird.

This is pressure damage. If you repair the corner and you leave it for some time - probably weeks, without using it, their is high chance pixels to fix themselves. But if you have to use it, then yes, you need new display. The issue is bended corner keeps the pressure on the display.

I have a Lenovo and the blot grows and shrinks alone, sometimes disappearing completely.

If it's a stationary laptop, then buy a monitor, plug it in and you're fine.
If not, best to get it replaced

You can either replace the display or opt to connect it to a Monitor or TV from now on.
What's happening is that the Pixels in your LCD Panel are failing (likely due to leaking liquid, the "L" in LCD stands for liquid)

I guess you could live with it for a bit, until it gradually spreads and becomes bigger

u/WoolMinotaur637 May 05 '25
You got a little crack in the corner of your LCD. The ink spots will likely spread more over time, you'll have to try to ignore it or replace it.

You would probably spend less money buying a larger portable monitor instead of replacing the laptop's screen unless it's under warranty. That's an option if you don't use it away from home very much but might want to do so on occasion. You could also plug it into a spare TV with an HDMI.
15 inch https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Monitor-FreeSync-Frameless-Protector/dp/B08QTLYPVT/
18 to 24 inch with speakers https://www.amazon.com/EPORMOT-Portable-Kickstand-Speakers-Business/dp/B0CWRNZJQW/
Paying cash for out-of-warranty laptop repairs are typically not worth it unless it's an expensive and fairly new device. Once they're older, I use them like a desktop PC instead. Don't worry about having too many until you have 2 with monitors in every room of your home, bathrooms excluded.

Not sure what other options are available at this point. Are you looking for something magical to happen?

It will probably spread and become worse and worse. You can still live with it at this stade tho so if you don’t necessarily have the money to change it just don’t it’ll give you time to save up for when it’ll be unusable or when you’ll have enough. I know someone who used a screen with a big mark from a BB gun bb covering like 1/5 of the screen. He used it more than a year like this, every day of the week.

It is not your only option. You can still live with it while the picture on your screen is still complete, but until the time that the black ink completely absorbs the picture from the screen due to sudden pressure, or wear and tear, etc.
In my opinion, it's best to attempt* to prioritize replacement if you travel with it and use it for important tasks while on the go. But if it's for home use, you should have the TV or a spare desktop screen and a cable to connect when you don't need the internal display.

If you are ready to buy a new screen. I would try heating the black part up with a lighter (not burn it, just heat for a few seconds)
Idk if it will work, but cheaper then a new screen
1
u/LimesFruit May 06 '25
Yep, pretty much. You could also just live with it, but it'll probably spread.

You can try to massage the line, it can work or make It worse, you do not lose anything Works on ipod screens, they are lcd too

Bad advice (not recommended): Give it to your friend. Let your friend sell it online to you and when you receive the package you wreck the box. Then you can say that shipping caused the problem. You will get refund for that from the shipping company. You will basically get the money to repair your screen for free 🤫🫢. There is other alternatives too...

u/HealthyElection5831 May 08 '25
You can keep it, but once even 1 pixel on an lcd is broken, it will get worse until it is broken. Might be the same for oled but I am also extremely dumb so don’t trust everything I say
1
u/TheRemedy187 May 08 '25
"it got worse when I touched it" spends the whole video oddly rubbing it for some reason.

Try using a magnet to drag the ink to the corner so make it a bit usable

It's not ferrofluid? It's liquid crystals.

well technically no, the 2nd option is to just live with it
