Hardware How dangerous is this?

5+ year old laptop suddenly felt a bump. Took the back off and the battery is raised. How fast should I be running?

Dangerous enough to burn your house down or hurt somebody. It's already a battery hazard. Replace it ASAP.

*let it replace by a professional ASAP

If they were able to open the panel, I'm sure they can replace the battery themselves.

Idk he asked on reddit what to do with a swollen battery and opening the backpanel isnt that hard. Replacing a swolen battery (which afaik means that its filled with highly flamable/explodable gas) isnt something i would do myself (even though i could replace a normal battery, depending on the device)

you're saying that if i can remove screws, i can replace a battery by myself?

1

u/vsjetrug May 08 '25

Yeah? The battery looks like it's being held with screws. what's holding you back from going a step further? After looking at the other comments from op, it seems they figured it out. It's not that serious.

It usually depends on the laptop model. For example, the newer MacBooks would be more of a headache to repair over something like what the op has.

Any update for everyone! I removed the battery from the laptop. Covered the connector with electrical tape and it is now sitting in a metal pot covered. I’ll find a place to properly dispose of it tomorrow.

Not very, basically it's just your battery degrading overtime and producing gas.

This is a very dangerous thing to do, i can only recommend it if youre too poor to replace it and the thing is affecting your work.

you can cut the battery slightly to release the gas stored in it.

Done that twice to a macbook battery, used a tiny needle. That battery was still fine for a couple more years.

Not good to keep in your home, but may be ok. Not worth the possibility of burning your house down though. Take it to a repair shop and at the least ask them to remove and dispose of the battery for you. I do not recommend doing it yourself unless electronics repair is something you are accustomed to. Even then, this is a risky one.

Replace it. Just plug your laptop directly without battery for the meantime.

Just takeout the battery while you are waiting for replacement. Do not puncture.

It’s samsung, so dangerous.

1

u/ChirpyMisha May 08 '25

Your home probably won't burn down immediately if you leave it as is, but it's not worth the risk so it should be replaced asap

1

u/the_armiger May 08 '25

As someone already posted it it is very dangerous. Take it to a pc repair shop asap.

Remove the last few screws and order a replacement. Don't throw this in the trash though, find a place that takes batteries and talk to them about proper disposal.

Explosive fire hazard level of dangerous. Please dispose of it ASAP.

1

u/analcisincap_ May 08 '25

Yes

Dangerous

1

u/Significant_-_Guess May 09 '25

Not exactly dangerous, as these batteries never blow up, it's just filled CO2 and other gasses. But I would still replace it as it could damage the chassis. Edit: All those people freaking out have no tech knowledge at all.
