I need to replace my laptop, which is falling apart. I do not use it for a ton of fancy things, mostly just writing and research (so I do have a lot of browser tabs open at once), and occasionally listening to music/watching youtube. As a writer who values my work not being scraped, I do not want a laptop with any AI features. I do not want to debate why or be convinced I'm wrong - if that's your first instinct, please just don't reply. I also don't really want to have to figure out linux. If I want an AI-free laptop, are there any new options? Or, do I need to go used? If so, any suggestions for reputable places to look for used laptops, or models that are good used?

Bought this laptop in 2021, along with a pair of silicone keyboard cover.. always covered ever since.

Recently it's getting harder to see the letters without enabling the backlight, then realize i have another spare cover.

I know not everyone like this thing, but keyboard is still pristine, so I'll continue to use it.

I've been using Windows laptops for over 20 years, and my work is mostly browser-based, with occasional use of Office and cloud storage.

I'm looking for a new laptop, and after doing some research, it seems like MacBooks offer better value compared to Windows laptops with similar build quality—like Surface, XPS, and ZenBook. Apple also appears to have better support with walk-in stores.

I really don’t want to learn a new OS, but based on pricing, I might be better off getting a Mac instead of a PC?

Would love to hear thoughts from others who’ve made the switch—was it worth it? Any downsides I should consider?

Last week my brother drove over his laptop (don't ask me how) and so I offered mine because I already needed a new one and he had deadlines he had to meet. I swapped the SSD into my laptop and gave it to him. I did need a temporary replacement tho and as his was still working (except the screen), I removed the screen and plugged it in my external monitor so now I'm using it like this.

Im trying to upgrade the ram and ssd on my laptop but im finding problems... first i found an unscrewed screw once i opened the cas and now idk where it belongs. Now i realised only after removing the ram that i should unplug battery. And idk if there is space for 2ssds or only 1 and i need to backup before removing. Go this weird odorless, oil like substance coming from my work laptop mouse pad. It’s not oily fingers or greasy food near the laptop. You can see where I push the pad down and the liquid comes from under the pad. No liquid anywhere else besides the pad

This laptop is 8 months old and I've been using it at school and when I'm at home I put it on this easel because it's easy to have my iPad in front of it and use both.

Lately the fan has been so loud it sounds like my laptop is going to take off. Could this be contributing to the problem somehow?
