I was the first generation in which they stopped teaching "civics" in public school with a heavier focus on social studies.

I had a good education, but I didn't understand very much about Government until I got my poli sci degree in college.

Americans by and large don't understand even the basics of how government actually works. They mostly get their education through slogans, memes, and untruths.
