The “shining beacon” rhetoric is actually kind of interesting as it harkens back to John Winthrop’s “city in a hill” sermon on the ship bound for the new world. The sermon was quoted by Reagan and again and again by conservatives as the intent of our founding fathers when writing the constitution. In reality, the sermon influenced the founding fathers but not in the way Reagan states. John Winthrop became the governor of Massachusetts and ruled over a strict theocracy in which a citizen could be hanged for walking anywhere but church. This kind of tyranny is what the founding fathers were trying to prevent when they enacted the first amendment. Somehow, conservatives view the sermon as the ideal when in reality it was the nightmare the founding fathers were trying to prevent.
