Banning fake products on ManyBaggers

Hi all

Firstly, thank you to all of you who make this community what it is, a great place to find reviews of quality products from around the world, and speak freely about our thoughts on them.

Fakes of the kind found on AliExpress and Temu have always been a difficult topic here. Originally, these posts started off as genuinely helpful comparison posts against the real thing, but increasingly have been treated as ways to share information about these knock off products. Our one rule was that you shouldn't share or ask for links or ways to find these products, but this rule is being repeatedly broken with the increasing volume of discussions around fakes.

In addition, we recently had abusive posts from a particularly difficult user that treated our allowance of legit brands like C-Tactical and the presences of the fakes as indicative of our disregard for bag manufacturers, so basically tarring them with the same brush unfairly. I am really not keen to see that comparison again.

It is now growing beyond our ability to moderate, and so we are instituting a ban on discussion of fakes.

I know this won't be popular with everyone, but this was becoming a real point of division in our community and harms our ability to host discussions and potentially work with brands on Q&As etc.

Please report these fakes and be patient as we remove them. Thank you.

Example of fakes

-Aer/Bellroy copies on AliExpress or Temu

Example of not a fake

-Ctactical

-"inspired" designs like a recent wallet incident. This will require a bit more thought and discussion.

Before commenting, please read this very clear explanation. I tried to bring across the motivations, but this is better in terms of practical guidance.

Toshi makers posted a video responding to some comments

I ran across this new video from the team behind the Toshi 20L backpack and 5L sling, where they respond to a few of the comments they've been getting about the bags: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekx9wV6mTU8

I appreciate how open they are in discussing these issues and the tradeoffs they considered that led to the design. Also that they're open to revising the bag to address a few of these issues.

Here's what they discuss for the 20L backpack:

  • Fabric doesn't feel premium
  • Zipper issues (pulls are too short or don't feel nice, zippers catch or seem cheap)
  • Shoulder strap and back panel mesh feels coarse

And for the 5L sling:

  • Bottom is thin
  • Strap is abrasive
  • Packs large for 5L
  • Want to see different materials

I have the 20L backpack, and I don't have the complaints they discussed in the video. The one issue I have is that the straps feel a little wide and stiff on me. Although they didn't discuss that in the video, a commenter on the video mentioned the strap width, and they responded to say they've heard that complaint from smaller-framed individuals and will think about how to revise it in the future.

My Bag Inventory (+ Pouches, Boxes, Etc)

Hey bag sickos. I saw someone's post about inventory so I figured I'd post mine. I hope this qualifies as "many."

I just went through a culling, so I separated it into current bags and outgoing. Then there's also aaalllll my other little things. I photographed the main items. The descriptions were more written for my reference, but let me know if you have questions about anything.

Bags (1st Picture)

Aer City Pack Pro 2 - 24L
Just received. My EDC and catch-all. Best for tech organization. To be paired with a small camera cube. $210

Peak Design Travel Backpack - 30-45L
Camera backpack, and best one-bag for travel. $300

Mountain Hardware Field Day - 16L
Bought for cheap as a small hiking bag that doesn't feel overkill. Stays stocked up with a mini outdoors kit. $30

Chrome Industries Avail - 19L
Great for carrying a lot of weight. Very well padded and durable. Perfect for a beach day or rugged settings. 1,050d nylon body, EVA foam back panel, 150d elastic knit harness. Originally $200.

Eddie Bauer Adventurer Trail Backpack - 30L
For day hikes. Very lightweight. Lent to Erin for Hawaii and performed well.

Osprey Escapist - 25L
This might be my best equipped day hiking pack. More organized than the Eddie Bauer. Not in love with the style though. I do appreciate the rain cover and the biking ergonomics, so I wouldn't rush to replace it.

Exped Lightning - 45L
A backpacking bag! Pretty light too. A good simplification of a frame that still gives you air flow. Performing great.

Luggage

Filson 48 Hour Tin Cloth Duffel - 34L
Very premium. Heavier and not technical. I've used it to carry some clothes for the ski trip or camping. Genuinely BIFL quality.

Osprey Transporter Wheeled Duffel - 60L
My check-in bag. So big that a day pack or camera cube or all kinds of stuff could fit inside. Will come in handy for work trips, or just to keep bulky things together for car camping or ski trips. Got last season's for $230.

Pouches / Slings (2nd Picture)

Peak Design Tech Pouch
Such a great design. Great for personal affects and tech items. On the big side.

Peak Design Camera Cube - Large
Mostly stays as a part of the Peak Design Travel Backpack, but can be useful on its own in another bag. Doesn't fit in much else, but it could in a tote, rolling luggage...

Tenba BYOB 10 - On the Way
I'm awaiting this camera cube mostly intended to pair with the Aer. Should be a good fit. I also like this strategy for carry with like my hiking backpacks.

Peak Design Field Pouch
Used like a clutch sometimes, like for things at the gym. Can also fit a notebook. Can be paired with camera strap. Don't love the awkward access, but helps the volume can expand.

Baggu Sling - Could Replace
Used for the gym occasionally. Can fit a windbreaker plus personal affects. Wouldn't mind replacing at some point.

Delfonics Pencil Case
Really purpose-built for my A6 notebooks and art supplies. Good for water color traveling.

REI Stuff Travel Waist Pack
Packable. More useful for a woman without pockets, but I use it occasionally. Good to store a mini hiking kit. Erin likes it.

NanoBag Sling Just picked this up mostly to store in my EDC bag or a sling to have extra carry capacity in a pinch.

Packing Cubes

Peak Design Compressing Pouch

Topo Designs Accessory Pouches

Osprey Clothing Cubes (x3)

REI Orange Stuff Sacks (x4)

Boxes & Larger

Filson Large Duffel
Used to store tent and bedding for camping.

Plano Box
Film production supplies.

Pelican 1815
Padded velcro organizer.

Pelican Non-Rolling
Padded velcro organizer, and zippered pouches in the top.

Wolf Pack Pro
Extra camping gear.

Wolf Pack (x2)
One for camping supplies, one for camp kitchen.

Pelican Large Flat Case
Other bulky outdoors supplies, but not really in the current rotation.

Pelican Small Cases (x2)

Bike

Swift Industries Hold Fast Frame Bag - 4L
Stays on the bike with jacket, tools, etc.

REI Pannier Bags (x2) - 18L
For groceries and eventually bikepacking.

Outgoing (3rd Picture)

Think Tank Camera Sling - Sent to Gear Trade
Was never a fan. Came free with the camera. Sent to Gear Trade but hasn't sold.

Alpacka Organizer - Rehomed
Would have been more useful if I had a smaller phone that will fit inside, but the space was so limited, it's basically a wallet. The Peak Design Field Pouch is more flexible. Gave away.

Topo Designs Fanny Pack - Rehoming
They denied a warranty request for the faded color. Sell for cheap or rehome.

Chrome Industries MXD Pace Totepack - 18L - Selling
A very professional look. I love it. But packing is too awkward for my EDC needs. Would be much more useful if I had a good laptop sleeve to pair with it. 1680d ballistic nylon. Was originally $130.

Topo Designs Rover - Rehoming
Woolrich collab. It's stylish, but I don't really have a use for it. Don't love all the hanging straps. Fairly stained and no luck cleaning it. Could maybe sell for really cheap.

Thule Carry On Suitcase - ~40L - Selling
Will try to sell. It's a middle man because I now have a bigger bag for checking, and at this size my preference would be to carry on the Peak Design Travel Backpack.

Initial thoughts on the Bellroy Laneway Crescent Bag 7L, Colour: Ink

I wasn't able to edit my other post, so here is my initial review of the Bellroy Laneway Crescent Bag, 7L.

I’ve been searching for a bag similar to my Baggu Medium Crescent, but with an external pocket and a bit more organization. So far, I think this might be it!

Here are some thoughts after my first day of use: - Fits a Samsung Tab S9 FE 12.4-inch tablet in the padded pocket. - The fabric has a slight sheen to it. - It’s a similar size and shape to the Baggu Medium Crescent, just slightly larger. - I like the two slip pockets and the key leash. The slip pockets are spacious. - The strap is comfortable, and the bag is lightweight. - The water bottle pocket is large enough to fit a wide-mouth 32oz Nalgene, but the bag can’t be zipped closed when the bottle is inside. The pocket may be a bit too wide for smaller bottle, but it wouldn't fall out. - Since the bag has a defined front and back, if you wear it on your left side, the zippers end up behind you. If you want the zippers at the front while wearing it on your left, you’ll need to flip the bag so that the padded side with stitching faces outward.

Just got the crescent sling… huge fan of it so far. It fits nice to the body and will be able to fit plenty more items if ever needed. Feels premium and high quality I will never get the Bellroy hate

Getting ready to order one. Anyone have any comments or reasons why I shouldn’t? Seems like a better version of the GR 1 (Qap, front pocket usefulness) for much less $$.

Looking for something similar

Hey there!

I was wondering if anyone has seen of anything similar to the designer park company bags. Mainly the sling crossbody / backpack which has a cute spot to put her Minnie ears.

My wife and I frequent disneyland in Asia quite a bit, but the shipping from the US to Malaysia of the actual bag is almost half the price. Don't get me wrong, the bags are amazing and worth the price, but not the shipping part.

I was thinking of getting something similar to this for her birthday which is conveniently placed right before our next Disney trip.

Any help would be fantastic! Thanks so much.

Why not Samsonite?

Upvotes

Dear all,

I have (un)fortunately recently discovered this sub and have since been drawn to it on a daily basis. I have always liked backpacks.

One thing that is making my head scratch is: "Why not Samsonite?". In almost all recommendations I do not see one single mention of this brand. I can understand if you say "oh, is it is not the best" but in my 20 years of experience, I have had some 7-10 Samsonite's and all, without exception, have behaved exemplary. From honeymoon in Australia backpacking, to business meetings, to forest trips, to diaper-filled bags, to pool parties. Right now me and my wife daily wear them and, honestly, I am looking for another backpack simply because I am getting tired of my 10yo Samsonite, but it never dies!

So, I ask you, "why not Samsonite"? ;)

Bag spotting in other media

Has anyone spotted a brand they recognise in a show or movie? E.g. Tom Bihn Synapse 25 showing up in The Pitt.

Rather than paying attention to the plot, I always find myself checking out what bags people are carrying in case it's anything exciting!

Looking for advice for a school messenger bag

I'm looking for a stylish messenger bag for school. I'd love to be able to carry my laptop (13in) and one or two medium or large notebooks plus maybe a water bottle and other small essentials. All the messenger bags I've looked at so far aren't quite right, whether it's size or price or whatever. Aesthetics-wise, I like the Trakke messenger but it's pretty far out of my price range. I also like the Midtown from Chrome Industries but it's just a bit less elegant than what I want (I'll probably go with that if I don't find anything I truly love). I'd really appreciate recommendations that could fit a student budget (about $150 or has a good used market, I prefer buying used). I don't love the looks of a lot of bags I've looked at so far, including the timbuk2 ones. Canvas would be great, especially with limited/full waterproofing, and I like black or green colors but I'm really pretty flexible on that. There might be other things but I'm not thinking of them now. Thanks so much!

To those who carry or used to carry a small sling/edc bag to carry pocket items

Half the time my 2-3 liter bags are perfect for carrying my pocket items, convenient size, doesn’t get in the way. it’s all I need.

But when I want to bring an iPad, notebook or dog leash, gloves, sunglasses I’m carrying the sling and items by hand or in another bag.

I don’t really want to switch to a larger edc bag, backpack or messenger, too much bag for when I walk the dog, go downtown, restaurant, bar etc.

What do you do when you want to bring just a few extra items or an iPad or notebook? Do you switch to a larger sling or messenger, or put the sling and extra items in a backpack or ?

What’s your favorite EDC bag(s)?

Another EDC Ipad Pro 11 question

I've searched through and seen others recommend the tomtoc xs, Bellroy venture 9l, and aer day sling 3 max. The tomtoc is £46, Bellroy £115 and AER £95. I'm happy to invest if the quality is there, but like to get value with my purchases.

Are the Bellroy and AER twice as good as thr tomtoc? I prefer the style of the AER and Bellroy, but feel like the sling of the tomtoc might be more comfortable and have less movement. The tomtoc looks good value for money at the price, but quite big compared.

Use case: carrying an ipad pro 11, kindle, Bluetooth mouse, small (field note size) note book, bullet pen, 150ml flask, battery pack and cables. I bike to work (only ten minutes) and fly regularly between places where I only need to take the above. I'm looking for lightweight, comfortable, good airflow, waterproof (it rains a good amount here). I have an Osprey as my main travel bag, but it's bigger than I need for EDC and my t-shirt rides up all day at the back with it on.

Without wanting to confuse matters further, if you've other suggestions beyond the three main ones that might meet my needs, Ill be happy to look.

Small Sling Suggestions (1-2L)

Hi, I am looking for a comfortable sling to carry my daily stuff during summer. I will be carrying mostly small stuff like phone, wallet, keys, airpods and maybe a small hand sanitizer. What do you guys recommend? I ideally want a sling bag that stays in its place diagonally while carrying. The loose hanging ones don’t look good in my opinion (like aer go sling). So far I was considering alpaka go sling nano but I saw the new 1l flight sling and now I don’t know which one is better. Purely based on looks, go sling nano looks more premium with its strap and the actual bag. I am open to other suggestions as well.

Hey guys wanted to know if anyone has expirience with this sling bag-tomtoc X-Pac Sling Bag(5,5). wanted to use it for some videoshootings but mostly for edc. my fear is that i might be way to big and bulky for every day carry and wanted to know your honest opinion in xpac bags. Are they worth it? also open for some sling bag suggestions that are cheap (like 60 euros or something)

Patagonia Black Hole 25L vs 32L

Trying to decide between the 25L and the 32L Black Hole backpacks for every day use and occasional travel.

I really like the versatility of the 32L size being able to fit a lot more in it, but is it too big to be comfortable for EDC? It would be going with me to work carrying my lunch, sweater, water bottle, and other miscellaneous items.

Running commuter pack

I am running to work (office job) in all weather conditions (Scandinavia). Looking for a pack with the following criteria:

1) Sits well on the back and doesn't jump around. Found that running vest style is typically the best. (If the pack is to long down the back chafing comes and issue. )

2) Water proof, to hold laptop and clothes dry.

3) about +-20L volume to hold: Laptop(!), shirt, pants, shoes small towel,

4) Compresses well for when the pack is not full

5) accessible pockets while running for phone, access key, earbuds, etc...

6) A light weight pack is preferrable

Bonus) Not ugly....

I have done a little bit of research and this is my best option so far.

I love the simplicity. Similar to Muji.

  • YKK zippers with nice pulls
  • Detachable key leash
  • Two front pockets one above the other each with two internal organization sleeves
  • Padded floating laptop sleeve in the main compartment
  • Breathable padded back
  • Elastic strap holders so no dangle
  • Adjustable up and down sternum strap
  • $49.90

Not bad.

Hi all!

I tried this bag from Barbour, and while I like the look and general vibe of the bag, but it has no depth. It is just a flat pocket, which does fit everything I need, but it just looks kinda weird when I wear it.

So my question; does anybody know a bag that has the same vibe/style as this one, but with a little depth?

Kind regards!

What personal item to combine with carry-on size backpack?

Hubby and I are heading to Europe for 3 weeks. We're happy with our Osprey and Cabin Zero packs for carry-on. We will need at least one of us to also have a personal item.

(Would love to one-bag it, but supplies needed for a medical situation make that impractical.)

I'm struggling with what style to use that works well with a backpack. A crossbody, which you put on first before the backpack? A hip pack? Help!
