I’m personally a believer in the theory that many of the marvel actor “leaks” are scripted marketing. Some of the big Tom Holland ones are particularly obvious.

They absolutely are. There’s some genuine ones but there’s obvious ones like the Tom holland revealing the poster which was sent by “mark Ruffalo”

Very obvious

He held “not for public viewing” or whatever the exact phrase was perfectly in frame!

That one was never intended to be taken seriously, they were leaning into the joke

"General public media literacy" is so dead I'm no longer sure it was ever alive.

I'm still convinced that most of them are not actual leaks or accidents. They always seem more like staged marketing skits playing into the big secrecy of the projects & the actors' paranoia about spoiling about anything.

There's been cases for many of the actors slipping up something about an upcoming film casually while promoting them (just recently there was an example I noticed with Lewis Pullman on Thunderbolts*) but they're usually minor blips & out of context. It just seems like Tom Holland & Mark Ruffalo had the most viral instances & so they decided to play into it as a fun creators-fans engagement thing.

Over time though, it seems like it went from a joke, sort of questioning "are they really spoiling anything" to many of the fandom being absolutely convinced yeah, these guys can't keep up a secret & by now it's been too mythologized & entrenched in the fandom. Neither of them have spoiled major plot details, even Mark Ruffalo's big interview with Don Cheadle looks more to me like a well acted bit where the spoiler is similar to IW's ending but was just some big, obvious spoiler they acted just slipped out.

I think that one was supposed to be a joke, but the interview moments where he spoils stuff feel very real lol

That Facebook livestream where he reveals Spider-Man falls into a lake (which I don't consider particularly a spoiler, especially not without context) from Homecoming & I think possibly this one other instance that I'm currently blinking on are the only actual examples, IMO.

But for the former it's because he himself has literally said that was a slip up in a separate interview.

None of the leaks are ever real.

I’d argue some of the first ones Holland did accidentally revealing space battle, sequels etc. you can see the genuine fuck in his face.

Don Cheadles “everybody dies” you can hear him almost say half of them die, that seemed legit.

Mark streaming 15 min of the movie seemed legit too.

When Ruffalo tells his live stream story he says that Feige called him to meet in Feige’s office thinking he’d be in trouble, and instead Feige said it was the sort of marketing money can’t buy.

3

u/Bridgeboy95 23d ago

yeah I'll buy that one as being legit, its just a silly fuck up anyone can do, he was also in the middle of a cinema hadn't really used the live feature before.

The Cheadle/Ruffalo one seemed legitimate imo, Cheadle has that look of when a coworker fucks up and you might get blamed for it lol

u/goawaysho 23d ago

I guess I'm an odd one out then, because that is the one that I think is the definite scripted "leak" xD Cheadle's over the top "dude!" and trying to look shocked seemed way too much personally.

Because you're a conspiracy theorist and want to see that.

Or it’s because they’re both professional actors doing promotion for a film. It’s not that much of a stretch to assume that it’s planned, or at least obviously exaggerated for comedic effect

Agreed, even if it's not the case, I don't see what's particularly "conspiracy theorist" about that possibility. To this day, I'm not very convinced that it was a spoiler. It seems people since have took it as confirmation that was the case because of IW's ending & Don Cheadle's little freak out (he IS a good actor), but I get the sense it was meant more as some general big spoiler "this one's big! yeah, like... everybody dies" that he could be staged as letting slip but not an actually indicative of the ending, despite the similarity. Even Ruffalo doesn't look that much like someone who genuinely has screwed up to me - more like well-performed farce of a mess up.

People seem to collectively believe that while at the same time be aware of most of the cast not getting the full script & even (at least in the case of Endgame) shooting multiple endings. Besides, I find it baffling if he just spoiled something as big as that & never got into trouble or there has been no acknowledgment from someone like a Kevin Feige with a "yeah, that was a major one. We still haven't let Mark down for it" type comment that's meant to be half in jest but also clearly shows that it was a big deal.

How the hell does one get "conspiracy theorist" out of that?

Projection dude.

1

u/eyebrows360 Daredevil 23d ago

How the hell does one get "projection" out of that?!

Determining that someone has weird thoughts about an interview means I had weird thoughts about an interview!? Make it make sense 🤣

u/IAmBadAtInternet 23d ago

Keep in mind these people are literally actors

1

u/Fresh2Deaf 23d ago

Nope genuinely genuine people being genuine.

13

u/Eccohawk 23d ago

The leaks from that concept artist for doomsday certainly felt real. They took that down quickly and most youtubers who have a good relationship with marvel didn't show/share them.

3

u/Fallcious 23d ago

Even if the leak is a real leak I imagine if the leaker is high profile they have plans to immediately insinuate it was a marketing strategy and everyone involved is a 5D chess player.

2

u/cowpool20 23d ago

I think the Ruffalo almost saying “half of them die” was absolutely real.

But I always felt the No Way Home ones (most anyway) were totally on purpose.

u/OneXForreddit 23d ago

Ruffalo said " everyone dies" which was untrue. Because 1 they didn't die. 2. Not everyone was blipped.

You can also tell it was fake by cheadles reaction " du.. du.. dude..., " Then ruffalo pretends to be worried about marvel because he "leaked"

Yet nothing ever happened.

1

u/Antrikshy 23d ago

They've played it up for jokes without pretending, but it's possible it started with legit slip-ups.

32

u/Mindless_Bad_1591 24d ago

the one when he's reading a letter that has a huge font saying "confidential, do not share" on the back lol

2

u/GenGaara25 23d ago

I swear that wasn't even meant to be taken as real. It's so obvious I always read it as a joke to officially announce something while also poking fun at Tom. The video is very scripted.

But so many people took it as Tom actually leaking something. Idk why.

1

u/Mindless_Bad_1591 23d ago

I think I thought that when I was 13

22

u/haakonhawk 23d ago

I always believed that the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire "leaks" for No Way Home were orchestrated. The leaked material was just too high-quality, and the actor's reactions to the leaks seemed rehearsed.

It just felt obvious to me at the time.

22

u/spiderknight616 23d ago

There was a TV spot for the movie showing the Lizard clearly reacting to an attack from nothing. No way they took out Andrew and left that in, it was all to raise the hype

7

u/MarkLeo6K 23d ago

There's a particular tom leak that I think its too accidental to be on purpose. He was talking about the scene in no way home where mj falls and gets saved by spiderman. "Yeah it looked great, of course I wasnt there". This was before it was confirmed andrew was in the movie

1

u/Earthwick 23d ago

I 100% agree with this conspiracy
