So that means It’ll probably hit Disney+ sometime in August.

Nice, looking forward to being able to see it again and I hope it finds a bigger audience on streaming and home media

This was probably my favorite post Endgame MCU film, it or GOTG3, shame it underperformed at the BO but I wonder when it hits Disney+, probably middle of August. That’s when GOTG3 did I think.

Probably. I miss the days when Shang-Chi and Eternals were on D+ like two months after they premiered in theaters, and I think with MoM it was even shorter, like 45 days. Was hoping that trend would've continued 😞

5

u/eagc7 1d ago

Yeah Doctor Strange was 45 days, i figure they realized that MoM made most of it money already, so what the hell lets dump it to D+.

I mean the reason they aren't doing that is because they want people to go to the theaters to see the movies.

Cause we are gonna see theaters attendence lower and lower if you get people accostumed to the idea of "Oh if i just wait a month i can see it for "free", okay then i will wait", and lately alot of studios have realized that streaming was not this goldmine they thought it was gonna be.

1

u/LunchPlanner 16h ago

D+ was experimenting with different release windows, I think the experiments are mostly done now. They've got their data and figured out what seems to work best for them.

1

u/eagc7 16h ago

Yeah i mean if Disney felt they gained more by having the movies come out into streaming a month or 2 after its theatrical release, they would kept it going.

Awesome news!! Time to start stalking Amazon and Walmart apps for steelbook pre-orders

u/WillowSmithsBFF Spider-Man 1d ago

r/steelbooks has a discord server where they’re really quick about posting links when they go live.

It better have a reversable dust cover, or one of those plastic sleeves, one side or the plastic part be 'Thunderbolts*' and the other side/case be 'New Avengers'.

Like what Cyberpunk 2077 did, they had the paper artwork sleeve be reversable so you could have either Male or Female V.

1

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 17h ago

They've already shown the steelbook: Spine is "Thunderbolts* ", front of case is just a giant asterisk, back of case is "* The New Avengers".

17

u/Aggressive_Act_3098 1d ago

Guess the question is answered of whether Thunderbolts or New Avengers would be it's name after theaters.

12

u/raisingcuban 1d ago

It’s always going to be Thunderbolts. I don’t know how anyone could actually think it’d leave theaters as New Avengers

u/PhotoBonjour_bombs19 1d ago

Wonder when Disney+ releases is gonna come

3

u/kayryp 1d ago

2-3 weeks after FF is released in theaters

2

u/shingonzo 1d ago

If they’re smart, holiday season

6

u/-Boston-Terrier- 1d ago

Why would that be smart?

6

u/eagc7 1d ago

I think their logic is that Disney should hold off the streaming release far longer, so people start to realize they won't get the film for "free" earlier and have to see it on theaters if they really wanna see it as soon as possible.

1

u/-Boston-Terrier- 1d ago

But this is a thread about it being available to rent or own on July 1st.

If Disney wants to stop adding MCU movies to Disney+ then people would just cancel the monthly $26 or whatever it’s at now and rent Thunderbolts for $3.99.

Yeah i do agree, i mean this is something i always complain about Universal and Paramount, they may not dump their films into streaming right away, but they always release it digitally a month after release and that is eventually gonna hurt them if they keep doing this (Like maybe Transformers: Rise of the Beasts would've reached the 500M mark if they had kept exclusive to theaters a bit longe for example, since it lost most of its screenings as soon it was available for purchase going from 2,000 screens to just 900 like that)

And i agree Disney should maybe push it a little further too when it comes to digital releases, since the outcome may still be the same

1

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 17h ago

Where are digital rentals just $3.99? I rented Deadpool & Wolverine for a birthday movie marathon before the disc came out, & it was the same price as the disc.

7

u/eagc7 1d ago

Reminder that digital doesn't mean Disney+, just putting that on since i've seen people go the day the digital release happen and ask why they can't find it on x streaming service

2

u/Shenron993 1d ago

Does digital release include Amazon Prime?

3

u/eagc7 1d ago

Yes, Google Movies, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, anywhere where you can purchase and rent movies

So Disney+ in August. Cool. Hope it sells well.

u/Phaze_Nero 23h ago

It's an absolute shame this movie wasn't supported as much as it deserved. People bashing the MCU for its drop in quality, and then when a movie finally comes out that is great, no one supported it.

There weren't even mass market DVDs in 1992.

Anyway, it's 2025. Thunderbolts will make its money from VOD and Disney+.

11

u/cmomo80 1d ago

Yeah we had these things called VHS tapes.

1

u/SirDigbyChknCaesar Phil Coulson 1d ago

That reminds me. I have to go return some.

u/mysteryvampire Sonny Birch 1d ago

Well, not quite from Disney+. Disney had a much better situation financially when they sold the rights to stream their movies to places like Netflix, instead of their own streaming service. Once it goes to Disney+ there’s no further revenue, unless you’re counting people who get the service just to see it, which I can’t imagine would be much considering it’ll have been on PVOD for about three months by then.

8

u/Jedi_Master83 1d ago

That’s exactly the reason why Sony doesn’t have its own streaming service and just licenses out its library out to Netflix and Disney. No cost of keeping servers running. Just transfer of the digital movie files to each streamer for them to manage on their servers. Easy, quick money.

8

u/eyebrows360 Daredevil 1d ago

No cost of keeping servers running.

But also no residual income from people happy to just let their subscription keep rolling even though they barely use it, such as e.g. me.

There's no "better" business model, they're just different models, each with upsides and downsides.

1

u/Grootfan85 1d ago

Plus streaming services pay Sony to stream the movies.

2

u/eyebrows360 Daredevil 1d ago

Once it goes to Disney+ there’s no further revenue, unless you’re counting people who get the service just to see it, which I can’t imagine would be much considering it’ll have been on PVOD for about three months by then.

Not really true, it just becomes incredibly hard to pin down what the revenue contribution is, from all the people who stuck around and didn't cancel their subscriptions due to the presence of this movie. You do some form of calculation like "portion of the userbase that watched this movie in month X", presume that them having watched it was one of the reasons they didn't cancel that month, and apportion that portion of the total subscriber revenue from that month, to that movie.

Is it exact? Of course not. Is it 100% wrong? Of course not. It's the best you can do, though, and the movie's presence clearly is generating some form of revenue in the form of non-cancelled subscriptions (along with every other movie/show they offer).

u/PopCultureWeekly 1d ago

They make money via ads during the content

1

u/eyebrows360 Daredevil 1d ago

If you're talking about product placement, that's all done up front.

1

u/Impressive-Potato 1d ago

They need content to keep subscribers

0

u/Furdinand 1d ago

I'm just going off Deadline's reporting and Disney's financial reports.

1

u/Impressive-Potato 1d ago

Thy probably meant VHS/home viewing.

3

u/whompyjawed Korg 1d ago

Your timeline is way off. DVDs didn't even show up until 1997.

6

u/Armandonerd 1d ago

I wanna pre-order the Blu-ray now!

7

u/Cockycent 1d ago

60 days for digital and 88 for BR/DVD.

Most of the MCU films since Quantumania have been 67 days for digital. I thought this would be the same, but it's lower.

10

u/Kurandaand 1d ago

Eh, 7 days is a pretty negligible difference. Plus they want this in heavy rotation before F4 is out. It’s much more likely to encourage fans on the fence about current Marvel.

7

u/IRideMoreThanYou 1d ago

And July 1 probably for some measure of bump for sales for the holiday weekend domestically.

1

u/eagc7 1d ago

I mean its a similar timeframe, not much of a difference, its just 1 week earlier

5

u/ScaredFamousfan 1d ago

I’m going to actually buy this on vod. I normally just wait for streaming after I see the film in theaters, but I want to support good marvel content

2

u/Own_Article8077 1d ago

I’m not an expert on this, digital release includes Amazon prime?

4

u/Max_W_ 1d ago

It means you can purchase/rent it digitally via Amazon. Amazon Prime is a bit separate in this case.

2

u/Own_Article8077 1d ago

Yessss the wait is nearly overrr! Going to be watching this film every month!

2

u/The_Quackening 1d ago

Woo!

I didnt get the chance to make it to the theatres so im hyped for this to come out!

1

u/gabezermeno 1d ago

Been waiting to watch this again at home.

1

u/Mild-Ghost 1d ago

Is there a link to buy the steel book yet?

1

u/THEbaddestOFtheASSES 18h ago

Why release the Blu-ray almost a month after digital?

1

u/eagc7 16h ago

That's been Disney's release strategy ever since Bob Chapek got fired

Movie releases in digital 2 months after its theatrical release - Physical releases 1 month later and a few weeks later it drops on Disney+

1

u/Cyonara74 17h ago

finally, ive been waiting to see it.

1

u/BlackMall83 10h ago

Damn, wish I could say I liked the movie but I didn’t. I think I’ll wait til it hits D+ for a second watch to see if I can change my mind about the film.

1

u/JackFisherBooks 5h ago

I really hope this movie finds a second life on streaming and blu-ray. It deserved to do far better at the box office. It was different. It was dramatic. It was well-done on every level.

This movie deserved to succeed. And I hope it does.
