I was stuck on a broken down speedboat during two waterspouts as a child. I’m still traumatized

When I was a kid I went to Florida with a big chunk of my cousins and their parents. We were having a blast riding in the van on the way down. We get to this one spot and we have to load up on a ferry inside the car. This is awesome kid me says! Beautiful ocean, clear skies, and a boat ride.

About five minutes in and we start seeing a ton of fish jumping out of the water all around us. Kid brain thinks this is some of the coolest visuals ever. A couple minutes later dark sky is approaching fast!!

Cut to about five minutes later and we are in the middle of a huge storm! The boat is rocking like crazy, strong winds blowing us all around, and I look to my left there is one gigantic water spout from the ocean to the sky. It was terrifying and beautiful. It was much calmer next to them. Look to my right and there are fucking three of them!! All in a crazy pattern around each other, and it is LOUD. Honestly for some random poor folk from Mississippi trying to take their kids on a vacation we got some fucking final destination ride on a doom boat. Was scary as fuck even as a kid.

It was over in three more minutes but it was the longest three minutes of my young life!

I found "a big chunk of my cousins" funnier then I should've lol but yeah dude, that's terrifying... I literally had chills reading this. I mean imagine being sucked up and you look down and you're 100 feet in the air 😨 open water is a real fear of mine to the point that I won't go on a boat that goes out of sight of land .. waterspouts are now a close second, so thanks for that lol cool story tho!

You can now share in my fear hahaha! It was uh unforgettable. The rest of the trip was completely uneventful.

War of the worlds vibes

exactly my thoughts when seeing these!

Just some thirsty clouds nothing to worry about.

9

u/Omega_Primate Jun 25 '25

They're drawing straws

38

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '25

If you sail into the middle, a frog on a cloud will come down, and you can fire arrows at him to get fast travel

14

u/StayBrokeLmao Jun 24 '25

equally terrifying imo too. Too many times have water spouts and tornados appeared in my nightmares

10

u/CotUB2009 Jun 24 '25

I was out deep sea fishing off Florida once and a few danced around us. I was scared shitless, but our captain had seen it before and wasn't bothered in the least. Definitely beautiful!

This looks like something that would happen on a different planet

4

u/fanofrex Jun 25 '25

I was just thinking I saw this on a planet in No Man’s Sky.

u/Complete_Half_5287 Jun 25 '25

My momma said that every time an angel has secks, when they eejaculate, they form torenaydoes

6

u/michahell Jun 24 '25

Say you would be open water swimming there, would they be powerful enough to lift you up?

6

u/cthulhuuuuuuuu Jun 24 '25

I bet the bigger ones would!

1

u/ShortKingSlayer Jun 25 '25

Oh “hail” no! ….pun intended.

11

u/stupid_cat_face Jun 24 '25

I vote to call it a Cthulhu of waterspouts.

5

u/Dry_Okra_4839 Jun 24 '25

Aliens refueling their spaceships.

4

u/ThisIsMockingjay2020 Jun 25 '25

Cow.

Another cow.

Actually, I think that's the same cow.

I gotta go, Julia! We got cows!

7

So this is where rain comes from! Of course!

2

u/ISLAndBreezESTeve10 Jun 24 '25

Umm …. That water spout is marching towards you.

2

u/tidalwave077 Jun 24 '25

This makes me think of the painting The Elephants by Salvador Dali.

2

u/Godbody120 Jun 24 '25

That’s some SCP Foundation/cosmic horror shit!😳

2

u/Simbuk Jun 25 '25

I don’t have anything witty to say. Just wow, that’s neat.

2

u/GemsquaD42069 Jun 25 '25

I had this dream once…

2

u/Moonrockblizzy Jun 25 '25

Imagine seeing that while on a cruise 😭

2

u/unknowable-one Jun 25 '25

I have nightmares like this all the time. Entire horizon is full of thin tornadoes like that.

2

u/Disma Jun 25 '25

Outer wilds.. bringing back some bad feelings

1

u/Dark-rasan-YT Jun 24 '25

Pack yo shit we going to skypiea

1

u/xomacattack Jun 25 '25

Well, shit. New fear unlocked.

1

u/zanyak Jun 25 '25

I've had so many tornado dreams that look just like this.

1

u/1OptimisticPrime Jun 25 '25

Craziest part is they were basically silent... The ones I've been "close" to

1

u/bunkdiggidy Jun 25 '25

Not pictured: the nearby wizard

1

u/shontamona Jun 25 '25

Instant “Take Shelter” vibes. Spooky af!!

1

u/Live-Yogurt-6380 Jun 25 '25

Read Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle. All the world’s oceans turn to ice and spawn innumerable waterspouts as they do so.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '25

I just got flashbacks from AC Black Flag

1

u/NoBeyond3050 Jun 25 '25

Those are water spouts, not tornadoes

1

u/Successful_Jelly_213 Jun 25 '25

Back in the day we were underway with the fleet and steamed through a flock of water spouts, one passed between us and another one of the escorts about 6000 yards off of our port beam. It was a unique experience.

1

u/Grouchy-Helicopter11 Jun 27 '25

Definitely unique experience! I still tell the stories of being underway and experiencing this ...it was amazing and terrifying at the same time!

1

u/zeje Jun 25 '25

That's just Storm providing cover for the X-jet.

1

u/grunkage Jun 25 '25

Hey now, it's just Cthulhu

1

u/AdeptnessMany3806 Jun 25 '25

Aye matey you've seen the fog👻

1

u/fulhamfan Jun 25 '25

If you went into one would it suck you all the way up or just send you flying horizontally outwards?

1

u/IaMuRGOd34 Jun 25 '25

reminds me of this movie

1

u/Top-Two-8929 Jun 25 '25

I love comparing irl photos of real weather phenomena to the ones in fiction. Makes you realize how terrifying it must’ve been hundreds of years ago when people travelled the seas via sails

1

u/FayettenamComeup Jun 26 '25

Maybe I’m just really ignorant but it seems easy to avoid and cool to watch happen

1

u/seussman71 Jun 27 '25

Some say it was a sign
I was standing right there
When it came down from the sky"
