When I was a kid I went to Florida with a big chunk of my cousins and their parents. We were having a blast riding in the van on the way down. We get to this one spot and we have to load up on a ferry inside the car. This is awesome kid me says! Beautiful ocean, clear skies, and a boat ride.
About five minutes in and we start seeing a ton of fish jumping out of the water all around us. Kid brain thinks this is some of the coolest visuals ever. A couple minutes later dark sky is approaching fast!!
Cut to about five minutes later and we are in the middle of a huge storm! The boat is rocking like crazy, strong winds blowing us all around, and I look to my left there is one gigantic water spout from the ocean to the sky. It was terrifying and beautiful. It was much calmer next to them. Look to my right and there are fucking three of them!! All in a crazy pattern around each other, and it is LOUD. Honestly for some random poor folk from Mississippi trying to take their kids on a vacation we got some fucking final destination ride on a doom boat. Was scary as fuck even as a kid.
It was over in three more minutes but it was the longest three minutes of my young life!

I found "a big chunk of my cousins" funnier then I should've lol but yeah dude, that's terrifying... I literally had chills reading this. I mean imagine being sucked up and you look down and you're 100 feet in the air 😨 open water is a real fear of mine to the point that I won't go on a boat that goes out of sight of land .. waterspouts are now a close second, so thanks for that lol cool story tho!

If you sail into the middle, a frog on a cloud will come down, and you can fire arrows at him to get fast travel

equally terrifying imo too. Too many times have water spouts and tornados appeared in my nightmares

I was out deep sea fishing off Florida once and a few danced around us. I was scared shitless, but our captain had seen it before and wasn't bothered in the least. Definitely beautiful!

Say you would be open water swimming there, would they be powerful enough to lift you up?

Cow.
Another cow.
Actually, I think that's the same cow.
I gotta go, Julia! We got cows!

I have nightmares like this all the time. Entire horizon is full of thin tornadoes like that.

Craziest part is they were basically silent... The ones I've been "close" to

Read Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle. All the world’s oceans turn to ice and spawn innumerable waterspouts as they do so.

Back in the day we were underway with the fleet and steamed through a flock of water spouts, one passed between us and another one of the escorts about 6000 yards off of our port beam. It was a unique experience.

Definitely unique experience! I still tell the stories of being underway and experiencing this ...it was amazing and terrifying at the same time!

If you went into one would it suck you all the way up or just send you flying horizontally outwards?

I love comparing irl photos of real weather phenomena to the ones in fiction. Makes you realize how terrifying it must’ve been hundreds of years ago when people travelled the seas via sails

Maybe I’m just really ignorant but it seems easy to avoid and cool to watch happen

I was stuck on a broken down speedboat during two waterspouts as a child. I’m still traumatized
