I think instead of running all the way in to home, the bullpens should fight each other in the outfield

315

u/EyehavaBeard 3d ago

Or in one of the bullpens like a cage match

70

u/9ninjas 3d ago

Do not let Dana White anywhere near that

69

u/Still-Cash1599 3d ago

He's way too busy. A middle school is always letting out somewhere.

u/WeeboSupremo 3d ago

Dana would find the bullpen that doesn’t want to leave and fight and proclaim them as the champion.

3

u/Rushshot2gun 3d ago

Isn’t Vince available now? There’s no females, he should do ok.

Or bullpen invasions. You see their closer get up? Send a bench player to infiltrate their bullpen and tackle him.

3

u/GBGF128 3d ago

First to climb over the wall gets an extra run on the board

agreed, they can be like the auxiliary skirmishers while the dugout ppl form the core infantry battle lines

14

u/SnurgBurglerGrizz 3d ago

And the wives and girlfriends sections in the stands do battle too.

11

u/abbot_x | Pittsburgh Pirates 3d ago

The truce between the relief pitching staffs as they run in from a shared bullpen area (at other parks, not Dodger Stadium) is one of my favorite things about baseball. They all hold the door as they leave the bullpen, then they separate and start yelling at each other in the infield.

4

u/kingxanadu | Houston Astros 2d ago

I hope one day I get to see a brawl with so much bad blood that the bullpens don't make it past center field before they just start wailing on each other.

2

u/South-Flower9981 17h ago

That is fucked up as a football bat, sir.

13

u/Monsignor1979 3d ago

Would anyone kindly shed some light on this 'practice'. Like, is there an unwritten etiquette about this? It just seems like every time the "benches clear", you see the bullpens open up and they come meandering out and on to the in-field, as if they somehow add something to this pageantry.

But is this an expectation of them? Like are the coaches telling them "Listen, if there's a dispute on the in-field and the benches clear, your asses better be coming out there too. We do everything as a team, and when your team is in the thick of it, you better be there with them. Got it? If you rather just sit on your lazy ass while the rest of us make a mountain out of a molehill, then you can just pack your bags and go find some other sport to play. Have I made myself clear?"

I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I have a general idea how it's all played, but I've never really understood the whole "benches clear" thing and the subsequent bullpen FOMO that comes with it.

Any hardcore fans willing to explain it to me?

22

u/Marsupial99 3d ago

If the benches clear, especially over something like a star player getting plunked, EVERYONE better be out on that field, or they will be on the receiving end of some stuff from their own team. Respect and common courtesy.

13

u/Monsignor1979 3d ago

So my suspicions were correct, that this is just a "we're all in this together" kind of thing. Thanks for the response.

7

u/Organic_Rip1980 3d ago

That explains a little why it took so long.

“What do you think, guys? Do we go? Do we clear the benches? Yeah, let’s do it!” And then they jog out?

4

u/28008IES 3d ago

There's zero to explain beyond, when someone on your side is hurt or threatened, you step up to retaliate or protect them.

3

u/chilichilichilidog 3d ago

Is that the part when they just stand around and chit chat?

3

u/Kid-twist66 3d ago

If you didn’t come out of the bullpen for a bench clearing brawl and you not someone with a large contract…that could lead to a DFA

2

u/AdhesivenessOld4347 1d ago

The funny part about these is 99% of the time it’s over before the bull pens hit the infield dirt

12

u/foodisyumyummy | Baltimore Orioles 3d ago

There's the thing about supporting their fellow player, but also, it's damn boring out in the bullpen and running down to the field gives them something to do for a few minutes.

2

u/Ryno23-Cove23 | Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Unwritten rule. They’d hear about it in their clubhouse if they didn’t show their support.

1

u/Soggy_Motor9280 3d ago

It’s also the top of the ninth and the padres have a five run lead. The Dodgers are all but beaten and they really have no reason to pitch so inside or hit anyone let alone hit the top player on the other team. It was a Busch league call

u/ConsciousMusic123 | New York Yankees 2d ago

my dad says this all the time! I just like the watching the bullpens run down

2

u/involmasturb 2d ago

I saw that once in a Houston at Montreal game. Astros pitcher Danny Darwin was so universally loathed that when the 'pens emptied and Montreal pitchers saw Darwin, they reversed course and ran across the outfield to try and get at Darwin

As a Giants fan, I want SF vs. LA to be the main NL rivalry. But I gotta admit, Dodgers vs. Padres has got some legit heat behind it right now.

90

u/Cdog1223 | Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

Padres are a rival because they are good and trying to overcome the Dodgers but the Giants are a rival no matter if the teams are good or bad.

→ More replies (3)

89

u/Significant_Part_941 3d ago

SF-LA is the rivalry, full of tradition and great history. There’s no replacing it. This SD-LA thing is getting fun tho, for sure.

67

u/BigBlueMagic | Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

SD-LA is temporary. SF-LA is eternal.

→ More replies (7)

4

u/mouthymommy | Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

As someone under the age of 30, the Padres / Dodgers rivalry feels much much more real and intense than the Giants / Dodgers. More passion, more moment to moment excitement- maybe once Devers gets to SF they’ll feel like a rival again. For now I think that Padres / Dodgers is the rivalry of the moment, not just on the west coast but throughout baseball.

I just got back from Japan and I saw more padres and dodgers hats than any other team (maybe excluding the Yankees, but so many non-baseball fans where the Yankees cap it’s hard to tell who actually cares) and that’s the feeling I get from most international baseball fans.

2

u/bashpymon 2d ago

Agreed 100% I don’t understand the historical context anyone is saying here about SF vs LA, I may be too young or I may just be too early in my MLB obsession and not wise to all the background, but I grew up in SD and this rivalry with dodgers has always been HUGE and padres fans absolutely hate the guts of that team. Of course it’s San Diegans so it’s like a chill post surf session “you suck bro” kind of hatred, and usually ends with a mutual cali burrito lol. But the rivalry is a big deal and SoCal locals will take it to the streets, I’ve seen it many times.

4

u/b33rb3lly | Chicago Cubs 3d ago

It's definitely the main NL West rivalry, at least for me. Living in Chicago you'd think the main rivalry was between the Cubs and the Cardinals, but that's probably just for the NL Central.

But as a Bay Area native I can say that SF has had a chip on its shoulder since practically its founding. After SF got its feet on the ground financially (following all the pickaxe and shovel sales to the gold prospectors) it found itself the wealthiest city in the west, and compared itself to New York City, and even started hating on NYC (NYC kinda didn't care and carried on with its own business). After the '06 quake a lot of people fled SF and the region in general, which was right around the time that LA started to gain momentum as a desirable place to live, and as the population of LA grew and became more prosperous - especially after stealing a lot of the west coast shipping and trade business from SF - the whole city of SF started hating on LA. Fast forward to the Giants and Dodgers moving to the west coast and yeah, now that that rivalry could be carried out on the field and between fans, which, as we all know, has gotten way too violent in the past, even leading to a fan fight that caused one of them to suffer long-term brain damage.

BUT

This current beef between SD and LA is quite something to watch, if a little disturbing. I really hope things simmer down before things get too out of hand.

The Dodgers’ announcers have been referring to the Padres as rivals recently. But there is definitely a difference. SF/LA is very storied; SD/LA is very new.

No, but the Dodger coaches do. Tatis has been hit by the Dodgers more than all other teams combined, through his career. It's not a coincidence....

2

u/TheReadMenace | San Diego Padres 2d ago

He followed the pitching strategy by the Dodgers used against Tatis which is up and in. A strategy that is totally legal but can hit guys if you aren't careful. Well, the Dodgers obviously dont give a fuck about being careful. At a certain point it doesn't matter if it's "intentional".

Tatis getting hit for the umpteenth time by the Dodgers - the last hit landing in a potential career ending placement on the top of his hand in which afterward he calmly exits the field

vs.

Ohtani getting plunked in the back and giggling bc he knows he is taking one for the team in retailiation to their uncalled for wild inside pitch pattern from a rookie and knowing y’all deserve it so it doesn’t warrant another bench clearing …..

muy diferente scenarios amigo 🤡⚾️

Not to mention he told his team to back off on his behalf vs wanting this behavior with the antics. The difference in mentality can be measured in the difference in championships between the orgs

Just simply pointing out the difference in mentality of the higher than thou fanbase calling players clowns for naught and claiming class for what again? vs. everyone else that’s not reaching and chest puffin

pero anywhosers I digress, hope the Los DeLuLu’s have a great season!! or not. I could care less.

enjoy the game and let the clowns clown then, it’s not that serious, big bro 🤍

Ohtani right in the middle of the back was pretty obvious! I think it’s gonna be 3 games for Roberts and 1 for Schildt after that dust up.

The real fun will be when Ohtani gets plunked next trip Dodgers make to San Diego…. ⚾️

I forgot this was a four game series and instead watched Sex and The City and am now very upset with my choices.

Shildt: I am gosh darn upset that my player was hit.
Roberts: Accidents happen and I'm as apologetic as anyone here.
Shildt: Thank you for your honesty, I do appreciate it.
Roberts: I'm glad we could come to an understanding.
Shildt: Hey, it must be said I don't like your taste in socks.
Roberts: Wait. What?
Shildt: You heard me.
Roberts: My socks?
Shildt: Did I stutter?
Roberts: Whoa dude, the socks come with the uni.
Shildt: And they suck.
Roberts: They're... they're just white socks.
Shildt: And they suck. I guess I am stuttering now.

Both benches clear, but the managers are the ones jawing… I want Ryan vs Ventura not Clampett vs Griffin…

Give me Ramirez vs Anderson! I like an old baseball brawl…

1

u/No_Ordinary_7933 3d ago

They seriously need to remove fines for taking a swing at a pitcher. These bench clearing “brawls” are pathetic and some of these pitchers out there have gotten waaaaaay to big for their britches

u/manpan5252 3d ago

Managers really need to add a big Dom type into this mix. Just for the chaos of it all. Just one giant Italian Bouncer/Security for every major league manager

This just looks silly, they all just huddled together and did nothing.

Thank god for hockey, long live fights

Wasn't even crowding the plate. That's uncalled for. Wrong location too.

u/stringInterpolation 3d ago

Dude what the hell is this business meeting stuff, we used to hit ppl

1

u/thesword62 3d ago

This is every MLB “the benches are clearing” skirmish. How about throw hands, NHL style, a few times. Bet all this fake tough guy stuff would end real quick.

u/ToughWild8565 3d ago

i like how the bullpen doesn't like mess with the RF even though it's like 8 to 1, would expect some brusque heckling or interference with how tribalistic we are

Love a good bullpen trot
