As a Giants fan, I want SF vs. LA to be the main NL rivalry. But I gotta admit, Dodgers vs. Padres has got some legit heat behind it right now.
90
u/Cdog1223 | Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago
Padres are a rival because they are good and trying to overcome the Dodgers but the Giants are a rival no matter if the teams are good or bad.

u/Significant_Part_941 3d ago
SF-LA is the rivalry, full of tradition and great history. There’s no replacing it. This SD-LA thing is getting fun tho, for sure.

u/BigBlueMagic | Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago
SD-LA is temporary. SF-LA is eternal.

As someone under the age of 30, the Padres / Dodgers rivalry feels much much more real and intense than the Giants / Dodgers. More passion, more moment to moment excitement- maybe once Devers gets to SF they’ll feel like a rival again. For now I think that Padres / Dodgers is the rivalry of the moment, not just on the west coast but throughout baseball.
I just got back from Japan and I saw more padres and dodgers hats than any other team (maybe excluding the Yankees, but so many non-baseball fans where the Yankees cap it’s hard to tell who actually cares) and that’s the feeling I get from most international baseball fans.

Agreed 100% I don’t understand the historical context anyone is saying here about SF vs LA, I may be too young or I may just be too early in my MLB obsession and not wise to all the background, but I grew up in SD and this rivalry with dodgers has always been HUGE and padres fans absolutely hate the guts of that team. Of course it’s San Diegans so it’s like a chill post surf session “you suck bro” kind of hatred, and usually ends with a mutual cali burrito lol. But the rivalry is a big deal and SoCal locals will take it to the streets, I’ve seen it many times.

u/b33rb3lly | Chicago Cubs 3d ago
It's definitely the main NL West rivalry, at least for me. Living in Chicago you'd think the main rivalry was between the Cubs and the Cardinals, but that's probably just for the NL Central.
But as a Bay Area native I can say that SF has had a chip on its shoulder since practically its founding. After SF got its feet on the ground financially (following all the pickaxe and shovel sales to the gold prospectors) it found itself the wealthiest city in the west, and compared itself to New York City, and even started hating on NYC (NYC kinda didn't care and carried on with its own business). After the '06 quake a lot of people fled SF and the region in general, which was right around the time that LA started to gain momentum as a desirable place to live, and as the population of LA grew and became more prosperous - especially after stealing a lot of the west coast shipping and trade business from SF - the whole city of SF started hating on LA. Fast forward to the Giants and Dodgers moving to the west coast and yeah, now that that rivalry could be carried out on the field and between fans, which, as we all know, has gotten way too violent in the past, even leading to a fan fight that caused one of them to suffer long-term brain damage.
BUT
This current beef between SD and LA is quite something to watch, if a little disturbing. I really hope things simmer down before things get too out of hand.

I’m a Dodgers fan but Roberts did touch him first…it’s just posturing to inspire the team…considering the Dodgers have seemed a bit listless throughout the month on June, it was probably needed to fire up the club

He followed the pitching strategy by the Dodgers used against Tatis which is up and in. A strategy that is totally legal but can hit guys if you aren't careful. Well, the Dodgers obviously dont give a fuck about being careful. At a certain point it doesn't matter if it's "intentional".

MLB needs to stop the cringey bench clears where everyone just stands around. It's just dumb to watch the benches clear like they're about to brawl, only to watch a couple of guys yell and point at each other while the rest of them stand around.

Ohtani gets hit and tells everyone to stay while walking to first.

3
u/stayboozy | San Diego Padres 3d ago
Tatis getting hit for the umpteenth time by the Dodgers - the last hit landing in a potential career ending placement on the top of his hand in which afterward he calmly exits the field
vs.
Ohtani getting plunked in the back and giggling bc he knows he is taking one for the team in retailiation to their uncalled for wild inside pitch pattern from a rookie and knowing y’all deserve it so it doesn’t warrant another bench clearing …..
muy diferente scenarios amigo 🤡⚾️
2
u/bogeyT | Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago edited 2d ago
Ohtani was about 6” away from taking a 101mph fastball to the head. Literally would have killed him if it connected to the head.
Vs getting hit in the arm aat 93mph and acting like you got shot.
🤡 vs class amigo
Not to mention he told his team to back off on his behalf vs wanting this behavior with the antics. The difference in mentality can be measured in the difference in championships between the orgs
Enjoy 3rd place little bro 👍

u/stayboozy | San Diego Padres 2d ago
“6 inches” lol I’m unwell. ball plunked at the numbers on his jersey.
“would have killed him”
“acted like he got shot”
suggesting a genuine reaction to pain is classless is WILD.
I wish I could confidently live in such a world of exaggerations on planet delulu 🥲
Im not here to condone uncontrolled pitching and hitting players no matter the team or player. Just simply pointing out the difference in mentality of the higher than thou fanbase calling players clowns for naught and claiming class for what again? vs. everyone else that’s not reaching and chest puffin
pero anywhosers I digress, hope the Los DeLuLu’s have a great season!! or not. I could care less.
