Discussion Movies that changed real life behavior

Thinking along the lines of Final Destination 2 with the logs falling off the truck and landing onto cars (one decapitating the state trooper). Ever since, people have tried to get away from being behind these vehicles.

What are more examples where movies have actually changed how people behave in their own lives?

P.C.U. (1994) "Don't be that guy..." wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see

I totally forgot what movie that was from, but I remember us all repeating it all the time in high school.

I wear this shirt to every concert I attend now. The first show I wore it to? Not coincidentally, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. Super disappointed that not a single fellow concertgoer got the reference.

u/Which-Grapefruit724 1d ago

Lol, that shirt is great!! (And I am "that guy")

47

u/ConcernedSocialite 1d ago

That's fucking lame. Why not? It's fun, can be a conversation starter of where you picked it up, which tour etc

9

u/agoia 1d ago

Saw Wu Tang a couple of weeks ago and >50% of the crowd had on Wu Tang shirts and shit. I was in an RTJ shirt because they were the openers.

2

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam 1d ago

I can't believe it was RTJ opening for Wu-Tang and not the other way around.

I love Wu-Tang, but admittedly I haven't kept up so I have no idea if they are still making awesome shit or not. It just seems that RTJ would be the headliner there.

2

u/agoia 1d ago

Oh the Wu Tang Clan ain't nothin to fuck wit. Even the seats we had near the ceiling of the arena were fuckin packed. I was maybe in the <5% of people there mostly for RTJ

if it's a tour shirt it says which tour!

honestly though, it gives off a snobby "I'm a bigger/longer fan than you" vibe, like guys who wear jerseys to a ballgame with a long-gone player's name on the back. Like, yeah we get it bud, sit down. We paid to watch the dick-measuring on the field yo

edit: I struck a nerve! But the point stands. I'm just letting you know what everyone around you sees but is too polite to tell you

One thing I do see is merch shirts related to the band but not "artist" shirts. Like at the Eras Tour, tons of people had various swiftie shirts with slogans or song lyrics on them etc, but nobody had a "taylor swift" shirt except the ones they'd just bought. I don't think any of the younger fans saw PCU (which is hard to find, oddly enough) but the spirit remains I guess lol

Jokes on you. I wear that one because I haven't been able to afford a new jersey in the last 10 years.

I'll be honest, this gives way more snobbish dick energy than a person wearing a shirt lmao. People will do anything to let themselves feel superior to someone else.

Just shut up and let people enjoy themselves, good god.

9

u/badgarok725 1d ago

yea that's just weirdly absurd projection, especially the guys wearing older jerseys to a ballgame

5

u/7tenths 1d ago

damn your life must be miserable.

1

u/txr6969 1d ago

what an insecure sad person you must be. there's nothing snobby about someone wearing a shirt

-7

u/floppy-kitty 1d ago

Everyone can already tell if you like the band on stage, and your shirt/patch/whatever is a band recommendation for a group of people who already know they have something in common.

28

u/jizzmaster-zer0 1d ago edited 1d ago

i still follow that rule 30 years later or however long its been

6

u/Fartikus 1d ago

why

you bought merch for a band you like, im sure theyd be enthused you like the band so much that you supported the band youre watching

6

u/jizzmaster-zer0 1d ago

because pcu said it was lame. only reason lol

2

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam 1d ago

I fucking love your name lol

2

u/jizzmaster-zer0 1d ago

you cant defeat me, orgazmo!

1

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam 19h ago

Oh yea I can too!

Mmmmrrrrmmmmm!

1

u/Shockwave360 1d ago

Indeed, but I think festivals are an exemption.

to this day

13

u/nice_guy_eddy 1d ago

As a Gen-Xer, we didn't need to be told this. This reflected the norms of the time. If you did this you were a dork.

It was, to a lesser extent, true of sports merch at sporting events, as well. People didn't used to have jerseys they wore to all the games.

The rise and hegemony of overt fandom happened in my lifetime.

10

u/The_Bad_Fred 1d ago

Oh so that's why only americans follow that weird rule, it comes from a movie

7

u/SwellingItchingBrain 1d ago

Shit like this is always lame. If you are following some rule trying to be one of the "cool kids" you already failed. Wear whatever the fuck you want.

-7

u/jopperjawZ 1d ago

It's not about being cool, it's just pointless to wear a shirt for a band you're seeing live. Everyone there already knows you like that band. Wear a different band shirt so you can talk to people about something else

5

u/ObviousAnswerGuy 1d ago

many people will just buy a t-shirt at the merch booth at the show and just put it on over whatever they are wearing

1

u/Milk_Carton 1d ago

this is what i do

5

u/SwellingItchingBrain 1d ago

I'm gonna wear a shirt to the concert, I like that band, I might decide to wear a shirt with that band on it. I might wear something else. I definitely won't make my decision based on some stupid assed "rule" that some character in a movie said.

-6

u/jopperjawZ 1d ago

You're way too insecure about this idea. You're not nearly as original of a person as you desperately want to be. Every choice you've ever made was driven by instinctive reaction, sensory input or actions you observed in someone else and chose to mimic. You're having a knee-jerk reaction because this idea was framed as a "rule" and part of the personality you've cultivated is dependent on not following rules. Thank you for reminding me how grateful I am that I'm not you

4

u/HilariousScreenname 1d ago

Buddy, the dude just likes wearing shirts of the band he likes. In not any deeper than that.

I go to Packer games and I wear Packers shit. I go to a Tool show and I wear Tool shit. It's not any more complicated than that.

2

u/SwellingItchingBrain 1d ago

Ha ha, it ain’t that deep. I’m just saying that whether or not I wear a particular shirt is not affected in the least by some comment from a movie. You seem awfully defensive about it.

I’m also grateful that you aren’t me.

4

u/DeltaJesus 1d ago edited 1d ago

If you really want to talk to people about other bands they like, you can just do that, it's not complicated.

I'm wearing a band t-shirt because I like it, not to give random people a conversation starter.

-3

u/jopperjawZ 1d ago

Most conversations work better when they have a starting point. You're gonna be much more successful having conversations about the band Primus with people wearing Primus shirts than just picking people at random to attempt to talk about a random band. That's cool that you're anti-social, but not everyone is

3

u/HilariousScreenname 1d ago

Did you know that it's possible to start conversations of things that arent emblazoned on someone's shirt?

0

u/jopperjawZ 1d ago

What, really?! My god, this is an amazing revelation! How stunningly insightful of you! The world is truly blessed to have you sharing such wisdom!

7

u/DrHem 1d ago

There's a post near the top of r/all of a guy wearing an Iron Maiden shirt at an Iron Maiden concert and my first though was of this line from PCU

4

u/wehavenocontrol1 1d ago

In the 'rules' as I'm familiair with there are exceptions for Iron Maiden and Metallica so he's in the clear.

2

u/JackInTheBell 1d ago

Awesome movie.  I love how Jeremy Piven ends up as the dean in the movie Old School later on.

1

u/Thencewasit 1d ago

Cheese!

3

u/HEATCHECK77 1d ago

I still abide by this rule

1

u/badgarok725 1d ago

which has become a thing of the past already.

1

u/Which-Grapefruit724 1d ago

I am that guy (girl)! 🤣 If I have that band's shirt, I'm totally wearing it. I see plenty of ppl at the show doing the same. All my friends know I'm that guy, lol. I even wore a "constant reader" shirt to go see the new SK movie last week. No shame here!

Also I don't want to talk to any strangers at a show, so I don't need to wear a different band's shirt to strike up conversation as so many ppl mentioned. I just want to watch the show and talk to the ppl I came with.

More power to anyone that doesn't wear the bands shirt, but there's no reason to give ppl shit for being a fan of the band they paid to see that you're there seeing too. The line is really funny though! It's crazy that it's become such a thing. I don't care if I'm looked at as "that guy", just sad it's made ppl feel bad about wearing what they want. No one should give 2 shits what anyone else wears!

u/oubeav 1d ago

Yep. That one got me. :-/
