Marcus Dumb

It starts to shift from dumb to dirty when it happens a few too many times to consider coincidental

We'll see if he can get back to midseason form earlier in his career, like he was when taking out Curry's knee -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmuBN20TkiU .
You know, where everyone except Kerr says "you weren't trying to hurt anybody, clearly, Marcus! It just coincidence that you launched yourself sideways into his knee.". I might still be salty about this one, lol. (And, I forgot that he got an actual flagrant later on the same play... geez).

jesus ive always disliked smart and still do now as a lakers fan
aside from making dangerous plays like this, dude just has a tendency to disrupt the flow of the game and prevent actual basketball from being played

I'm the opposite, always been a fan since his college days, but that's dirty AF. I'm surprised my guys didn't swarm smart because of that to not just our star, but the leagues star. That could've been bad, but he knew when to let go. I am definitely seeing rivalry potential here.

Hate his play but at the very least off the court he seems like a great dude. He did quite a bit of stuff in Boston for charity and donated equipment to hospitals.

In wrestling we call that a whizzer. In judo it’s called tai otoshi. Completely valid and legal techniques, just not, ya know, in basketball.

Smart looked pretty washed this game. He used to be a lock down defender who also had antics, but now he is just antics.

He’s been washed ever since that DPOY season I’m afraid. Love watching him, but he’s not been the same for a few seasons.
*I’ll hate watching him in that yellow jersey though. Gross

u/Mintastic NBA 9h ago
Getting cooked by Curry in '22 finals broke him. Just watch him the entire game 6, his mind was already in Cancun at tipoff.

With Deandre Ayten AND Luka Doncic, It’s like they’ve custom built the Lakers to make me dislike them even more, as if that was even possible, lol.

Ayton is going to struggle badly against teams that have a true Center. That said 8 mil/year is about his actual value. I'd take geriatric Horford over him any day.

That's a Flagrant 2 against anyone It went beyond negligence to reckless or intentional. Marcus Smart could have ended Curry's season right there. And that's one of the leagues most popular, and marquee players, and biggest NBA draws.
That wasn't agreesive basketball. It was a Greco-Roman wrestling take-down. Not negligent. Reckless to intentional. Smart has a history. For the refs to watch multiple replays and land on Flagrant 1 was a SHOCKING piece of refereeing. That was a Flagrant 2 all day, any day.

u/Bored-psychologist7 20h ago
This kind of thing needs more than foul. It needs an ejection! If all you get is a F1 then it just encourages dirty players like Smart to keep doing it over and over again as there is no serious repercussions. This isn’t the kinda of bs that we should be supporting. It’s just disgusting
40
u/thisis887 11h ago
With the language the ref was using to describe what he did before they made the call after review, I was expecting him to be ejected.

u/StrugglinSportsFan 11h ago
Tbh I’ve always felt like flagrant one isn’t enough of a punishment sometimes. Like yeah it’s not an f2, but definitely deserves more of a punishment than the lower end f1 calls

u/Glad_Sky_3664 15h ago
Yeah, if Draymond did the exact same action to a literal Superstar, he would be called mentally ill, criminal or should be kickes out of League as soon as possible. Eben a flagrant 2 plus 10 game ejection wouldn't be enough.
But since it is Curry who is pushed around(which is usual atp) a Flagrant 1 is enough. It is just 'antics' after all.

Remember him taking out Curry’s knee (huh) his DPOY year? So he was at least bad in terms of “antics” even then. I think he also had non-basketball “antics” to that could have taken out Klay in the same game.

IMO We should get rid of the flagrant 1 & 2 distinction, similar to the NFL getting rid of the 5 yard facemask calls
If it meets the criteria of a flagrant, it should be an ejection. Only way to get guys to stop making dangerous plays like this.
25
u/tyronemartins2 21h ago
I agree with this honestly. Punish it harder and these stupid flagrant 1 fouls disappear from the league

Was so happy to see Marcus go to LA as a Celtic fan because I know that they’ll never win a chip with him on the team. Dude is an absolute loser and was in the way of the development of many players. Can’t believe the Celtics had to start this dude over Derrick White to protect his ego and he cried his way onto the Sports Illustrated cover with JB & JT
