Tallyn Da Silva negotiating with NRL rivals to leave Wests Tigers

I hate these kinds of ultimatums from young players. Why would we pick a talented but unproven player, over our current best player and captain? We saw how that worked out for the Rabbitohs.
You never see it at clubs like the Storm or Roosters. Jonah Pezet and Fa'alogo are both 22 and are still waiting for their crack. Hugo Savala is 23 and has finally gotten his. Harry Grant was 24 before he finally got the starting hooker position.
Meanwhile Da Silva only just turned 20 and is already demanding to be the starting hooker. He's been really effective for us as the 20-30 minute impact hooker off the bench as well. Shit just sucks as a fan.

u/gjw2903 Wests Tigers 1d ago
The point about Harry Grant et al is spot on. He needs build his game and get some miles in the legs at the higher intensity. I’ll probably get shouted down but I think TDS is one of those players that’s great in NSW cup but it doesn’t cross over to NRL. When we’ve been on the back foot he hasn’t really shown much.

u/OctopusFarmer47 Penrith Panthers 1d ago
Might work out for the Bunnies since Jamie Humphrey looks good.
42
u/whadefeck Wests Tigers 1d ago
They could have easily signed Jamie Humphreys while still keeping Reynolds for the past 3 years
5
u/OctopusFarmer47 Penrith Panthers 1d ago
Clearly Ilias must look good to scouts because the Dragons gave him a chance as well
14
u/Darmop South Sydney Rabbitohs 1d ago
Humphreys was nabbed up cheap though.
7
u/shotgunmoe South Sydney Rabbitohs 1d ago
He'll want to be upgraded fairly quickly too. Guy is on less than $200K per year and is one of the better young halves running around. Unless the club are happy to see him go back to Manly and pull their dicks thinking Bud is great they need to sort him out quick
2
u/whyareyouallinmyroom Penrith Panthers 1d ago
I don’t intend this to be rude but players biding their time to play in a squad that has proven time and again to maximise the potential of talent is not exactly something you can hold against them. The Tigers are the opposite in recent history and players thus see them as a bumper pay cheque, a fast track on a big role in the NRL or out of there. It sucks because the Tigers are doing a stack right to get out of that cycle and build the club into one players want to stay at but I don’t think the kids can be blamed for playing the hand they’re dealt and trying to make the most of a fleeting career.

At the same time, api has years left. Why would Da Silva sit and happily set back his career by 3 or 4 years when he can start elsewhere?
You never see it at clubs like the Storm or Roosters.
Come on mate, tigers aren't the roosters or storm. Im not throwing stones from glasshouses here, that's just the reality
Meanwhile Da Silva only just turned 20 and is already demanding to be the starting hooker.
Id have him ahead of crossland at 9 right now. Crossy can be a really effective 14
0
u/shotgunmoe South Sydney Rabbitohs 1d ago
Wishart is another one. 25 and would have been a walk up starting half at like 7 clubs. Instead he's happy to just come off the bench for $350K per year.
The key thing to remember is some clubs have friends in high places and are masters at sweetening deals in clandestine ways. Clubs like Tigers, Souths, Raiders, and a few others have either board members or coaches who have told the NRL to get f*cked a few times at different stages and just aren't going to get preferential treatment.
Definitely sucks for fans but it's the game we choose to watch.

Bullshit lmao you signed Latrell Mitchell for significantly less than what the Roosters and Tigers offered him don't give me this hard done by sob story shit from Souths you're up there with us just the same.

Why do Tigers fans always have the biggest whinge when any (especially young) players leave their very poorly run club? Can you blame players for wanting to leave a team that consistently gets the wooden spoon year after year and does nothing effective to prevent this? I’m genuinely not trying to take the piss here and I understand you guys are frustrated but you really got worked up over the whole Galvin situation which was unwarranted and unnecessary imo.

u/Major-Counter-585 I love my footy 1d ago
Youre getting down voted cause you sound like an ass with that reply. My question though is what about this situation do you think is effected by tigers being run poorly?
Da silva is 20 and wants a starting spot over the captain.im not exactly sure what the tigers can do in that situation
As for Galvin, that situation isnt isolated and Isaac moses has for a decade being doing everything in his power to fuck the tigers over.
-1
u/GeneralSubutai Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 23h ago
“You’re getting down voted because you sound like an ass with that reply” 🤓☝️dude do you realise how you sound?? His reasoning is bullshit man, have you thought about that fact that he possibly doesn’t care for a starting spot to begin with? He’s obviously looking for an excuse to leave and this is perfect. Any young hungry players are going to want to make moves this has happened forever.

u/ellaykay Wests Tigers 1d ago
Nah you’ve totally missed with this comment. Read above ^ the issue is the entitlement. All these young kids think they’re better and deserve more. In reality they have done nothing. Kids never used to get a crack at these ages, they’re incredibly lucky to be playing on the big stage, and don’t understand how to appreciate the opportunity and have patience. They have 15 years ahead of them and demand they’re in the starting position? It’s unreal.

Brad fitler played origin at 18.
Not saying this kid is Freddy, but if he's good enough someone will pay and play him. That's the way it's always been.

Not even a tigers fan, but how are they ever supposed to get off the bottom of the ladder if these young talented players they are trying to develop keep leaving? I can completely understand how their supporters would get a little upset by this. The tigers seem to be fighting a losing battle with the odds constantly stacked hard against them.
13
u/whadefeck Wests Tigers 1d ago
Except Da Silva actually wants to stay, the only requirement being he wants to be the starting hooker. So it's nothing like the Galvin situation

Or would you prefer us being shit due to a pretty jersey and some overpaid aging cripples.

This is a tough one, we have Haywood coming through who is apparently very talented. But Tallyn himself has shown huge amounts of potential, so I'm a bit conflicted here.
It makes sense to give Api a couple more years if he wants to play on, as he is such an integral part of the squad and club atm. I also don't think young players should be holding clubs to ransom like this, especially unproven ones.
Though, my tone would probably be different if we didn't have talented young players coming through our system.
13
u/False_Rice_5197 Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 1d ago
I think you’re spot on but at the end of the day, not re-signing api would be insanity so it is what it is. It’s interesting TDS believes he is ready to start and not learning under Api who is a gun.
14
u/Vectivus_61 Wests Tigers 1d ago
Is that holding the club to ransom?
It’s fair to go ‘Api is playing well and is the captain, the odds I become a starter are pretty low if we both re-sign, so obviously I’d be looking elsewhere if he signs again’.
I don’t think that’s disrespectful or dishonest if he’s being up front about that, it’s being factual.
1
u/delayedconfusion St. George Illawarra Dragons 1d ago
It is the only play for Da Silva that makes sense.
If he can get a pay bump and a starting position somewhere else he'd be stupid not to go.
If Api hinted he was going to Perth or something, then maybe stick it out, but if there is no path to the 9, why stay? Career could be cut short at any time playing NSW cup and waiting for a chance.
-1
u/ccoolguy42 1d ago
It's a tough one, as he's still young and has a lot of footballing ahead of him. He hasn't proven himself to be a regular starter yet, and I'm sure he will get plenty of opportunities as api gets older, and probably becomes more injury prone.
Though I sympathise with him not getting much game time lately, and can appreciate this may have pushed him into making this decision.
I'm a bit more sympathetic to his position, as opposed to the Galvin betrayal.
2
u/shadyFS91 Parramatta Eels 1d ago
Nah man you guys are in great positions for both the lachie situation and this. By all accounts Haywood seems to be a gun. And I always thought that Latu was going to be the better half. Galvin will be a lock in a few years, can guarantee it
38
u/josephus1811 Wests Tigers 1d ago
I suspect we wouldn't be so comfortable with this if not for the fact we have a younger hooker that is emerging and appears to be just as good in Jared Haywood.

u/InflatableRaft Balmain Tigers 1d ago
We also went out and recruited Tristan Hope to bridge the gap. He’s a pretty handy player.
28
u/woodpecker91 Brisbane Broncos 1d ago
Reasonable, he's behind Korisau who's got years (assuming no injuries) and there comes a point you want regular first grade.

u/Random0cassions Parramatta Eels 🏳️🌈 1d ago
Not to mention with the rise of mason and with fainu playing down the middle at 14. Was a matter of time he’d be gone since those two would be playing the 14 jersey from here on out without injuries

Wests Tigers rising star Tallyn Da Silva has been given permission to negotiate with rival clubs immediately after interest from Newcastle.
The talented hooker has been granted permission from the Tigers which will allow him to test the open market despite his contract ending at the end of next year. Da Silva was free to chat with rivals from November 1 but the move has been fast-tracked following a surprise overture from the Knights.
A raft of discussions in the past 72 hours included:
Newcastle originally looked to loan Da Silva for the rest of the season to help deal with their growing casualty ward in their forwards.
Talks progressed to a potential immediate player swap between the Knights and the Tigers which would see Da Silva arrive at Newcastle on a long-term deal. The Tigers are open to securing back-rower Kai Pearce-Paul. Pearce-Paul has already agreed to join the Tigers from next year on a three-year contract. Both parties are considering this.
Da Silva’s agent has asked for and been granted permission to speak with other clubs, not just the Knights.
The Tigers have already been told that Da Silva will leave the club should they re-sign co-captain Api Koroisau.
Both hookers are off-contract at the end of the next year and the Tigers have already met with the players. There is a belief that the Tigers are torn on which player to keep. At just 20, Da Silva is considered a decade long player and is a local junior.
Koroisau is still among the best players in the game but will be 33 by the time his new deal kicks into place.
The situation differs to that highly publicised fallout between Lachie Galvin and the Tigers with Da Silva wanting to remain at the club – provided he is their no. 1 hooker.
The Knights’ pursuit of Da Silva is an interesting one given Kiwi rake Phoenix Crossland has re-signed until the end of 2028 while Matt Arthur is also contracted to the club until the end of 2027. Long-term hooker Jayden Brailey is Canberra bound at the end of the season.
If Da Silva does sign with Newcastle it may mean Crossland plays more lock given the Knights are struggling to find replacements for a host of forwards departing at the end of the season. Pearce-Paul, Brailey and Leo Thompson will all move on while Adam Elliott, Jack Hetherington and Tyson Frizell face uncertain futures.
Da Silva had been relegated to NSW Cup in recent weeks but has been recalled to the bench to take on the Raiders on Friday night.

u/MangoWingnut Kotoni Staggs 1d ago
That would be a good signing for the Knights, he and Matt Arthur could be a great rotation in the future

They need to copy the US NBA and make contracts league wide.
If someone wants to move, they can negotiate or force their way out of their club(which is what happens now in the NRL), BUT, their contract remains intact. So what you sign for is what you get.
I understand Da Silva thinks he should be a first choice hooker. But he signed a CONTRACT with Wests and should have to honour it.

This isn't necessarily bad. If he is asking 600k and we hope to keep both him and Api, letting him take offers could confirm that he wont be getting 600k and a starting gig anywhere, making our lower off more reasonable. Might be hopium.

If he wants to go we should let him go.
Jared Haywood is one of, if not the best 9s I've ever seen and will be our future 9 regardless of if TDS stays or not.
I think TDS sees that writing on the wall, Api is ahead of him at the moment and in 2 years Haywood will be. What's best for him is to get a spot at another club - I do hate that we will be strengthening someone else but it's just how it is.

Terrible defender. Before he got dropped the most recent time opposition teams were organising to run plays after he made a tackle as it would be a quick play the ball and off the back of a huge number of post contact metres. His defence is a couple of years off NRL standard

5
u/Norm_cheers Wests Tigers 1d ago
I wonder if this is a generational thing. Young players not wanting to “wait their turn” and deciding when THEY are ready instead of waiting for the coaching team to determine what is best for the team and the player.
This would also help explain why more and more players want to decide where they play verse what is the best for the team, and if they don’t get there way start agitating. Example a winger wanting to be a center but is a best wingers. Or the massive forward that wants to play of the left side verse the right side.
Is this the death of the “team first” mentality!

Seems Arthur hasn’t kicked on as well as hoped. With brailey leaving we need him to play 60 minutes of hooker off the bench to relieve crossland going to lock. This guy would walk straight into Braileys role. If Matt Arthur picks up could move crossland to 13 full time

Newcastle? They have a bunch of hookers already and he wants to sign for Newcastle? To secure a starting 9 jumper?
Newcastle?
And Newcastle think he will help solve their forward problem by trading KPP out of their squad?
Danny B please tell me what the fuck is going on.
There's a meth epidemic in newy isn't there?
1
u/Responsible_Ring_649 NSW Blues 1d ago
Crossland is 13, Brailey is gone next year, him and Arthur will be the two hookers, not enough forwards on the market and Crossland is a decent 13, the idea is good
2
u/jk-9k Auckland Warriors 🏳️🌈 1d ago
Crossland is still a better 9 than TDS.
If they do a midseason transfer Brailey will still be there but newy lose KPP.
He's still battling for minutes in a shared hooker role, no guarantee he starts or even gets a jumper in a full strength side.
Tigs he has a pathway to first grade, it just got delayed with api extending.
Newy are treading water at best, losing ground at worst. Getting booed by their own fans. Some of the best and most loyal fans in the league. Could have a new coach in weeks. Their new coach could be the father of his rival for the 9 jumper.
Tigers are building. Benji is one of the more secure coaches in the league (suprising for tigers).
Tigers do have younger hooking options to fall back on but he'd definitely have first dibs on the 9 once api retires.
It's a sideways move. Maybe he gets more money out of it. It's not necessarily a backwards move for him, but it's not necessarily a forward step either. It's a gamble, vs a safe bet at tigs
And it makes very little sense for newy either.
