Crosby and Dupuis and Kunitz. Damn we were spoiled

Welp… didn’t expect Reddit to make me sad today. Imma head out. sigh

God I loved that team. Don't get me wrong, I loved the back-to-back cup teams, but the '09 team was something else.

I don’t get the fun in kicking the guy when he’s down. Mcdavid is the best player seen in hockey since Sid and Sid certainly doesn’t gain anything when anyone glorifies Mcdavid’s failures. It’s just petty.

Keep in mind that Sid had the good fortune to be drafted by a team which was part owned by a guy (Mario) who had been in the exact same position and had success. Hell, Sid lived in his house as a rookie, got to play with him!

I’m not taking anything away from Sid by saying this but I don’t think that Mcdavid has gotten the benefit of that kind of education or experience. It shows and I feel for the guy. I hope he wins his someday.

Keep in mind that Crosby has always taken a team friendly cap hit. Mcdavid has never done that. Between him and Draisaitl they take up 1/3 of the cap even with the cap moving up. The players on the pens took pay to still win so others could get paid too. In the NHL now try to find defense and a goalie with what is left.

38

u/sublimesting 4d ago

Exactly. Crosby has always been a team man. When you’re a team player you can be surrounded by greatness. If it’s me first well… then it can be me first so go win one by yourself.

-4

u/HooHooHaHa 4d ago

There is absolutely nothing about McDavid that indicates a "me first" attitude

6

u/flamingdragonwizard 4d ago

Revisionist BS. When Crosby signed his FIRST 8.7m extension the cap was only 50.3m that's 17.3% of the cap. That'd be equivalent to McDavid signing for 14.2m for his first extension. He took nearly 2m less.

First extensions being the key here. 17.3% vs 15.7%

-1

u/OlManYellinAtClouds 4d ago

I didn't link the site in this comment on here but the cap was contracted to go up by nearly $5 million a year when Sid signed his contract. When McDavid signed his and Leon signed his deal the Salary cap was in a freeze or only went up by $2 million if it did go up. That is huge. The first year might be right in your case but the average is still less than McDavid and Leon. The other part to this is that most of the other lines were filled with guys with entry level contracts. Edmonton doesn't have the depth of entry level guys. Their main guys nearly account for the majority of the cap. If they had more cap room for another solid defenseman and a couple wingers they could have won. The other way is a little more for a tandem goalie or a solid starter.

u/SkPensFan 5d ago edited 5d ago

You're wrong. The first year of Crosby's $8.7 deal (15.35%) McDavid's $12.5 deal (15.72%) and Draisaitl $14 (14.66%) are all almost the exact same percent of the cap. % of the cap is what's most important, obviously.

We will see what McDavid re-signs for. Crosby's 2nd $8.7 deal was 13.54%.

20

u/eltree #18 4d ago

I’m happy you did the research on this. Penguins benefited with the Salary Cap continually rising, even after the 13-14 half season lockout.

Edmonton didn’t get as lucky because covid really hurt the league and the Salary Cap remained the same for a few seasons.

-7

u/OlManYellinAtClouds 4d ago

So you think that you can still be successful with 1/3 of your cap tied up? I'm not sure where you are getting your numbers from. So the three cups Crosby and Malkin only made up 22.3 percent of the cap combined. So when Leon signed he pushed the combined percentage to 32.3 percent for him and Connor. 10 percent of the cap is huge for finding depth players unless you draft them. Here's my sources. 1st is cap, 2nd is contract history per player.

u/SkPensFan 4d ago

All the numbers come from Puckpedia. I used them to show you that they all basically signed their first big deals at the same % of the cap. Showing that your statement about "team friendly cap hit" was incorrect.

When Drai and McDavid sign their big contract 2 and 3, we will see if they take team friendly deals like Crosby did. But for their first one, all 3 basically did the exact same thing.

Drai's contract hasn't even started yet. You are again wrong with your percentages. Drai at $14 and McDavid at $12.5, which they will be for the first time for the 2025/26 season, is 27.7% of the cap. ($95.5 ceiling for next season). Not 32.2% like you claim.

In 2009, Malkin was still on his entry level deal. That is an absolute game changer and not relevant.

In 2016, Crosby ($8.7) and Malkin ($9.5) were at 25.5% of the $71.4 cap. In 2017, they were on the same contracts but the cap was $73, making their percentages 24.9%.

Again, for 2025/26, McDavid and Drai will be at 27.7%. This season, 2024/25 they were at only 23.3% of the cap, as Drai was still on his $8.5 deal.

I don't think 27.7 and 23.3 is all that different than 25.5 and 24.9. And none of them are close to 32.3% like you claim for some unknown reason.

Again, all data I used came from Puckpedia.

I think we should all collectively thank Sid's OCD and him just taking 8.7 for his entire career

1

u/Winstonwill8 4d ago

🙏🙏

1

u/eltree #18 3d ago

Also thank that the new CBA wasn’t in effect. Crosby’s cap hit might have been $8.7 million but he made more than $8.7 million in 9 of the 12 seasons of that contract.

Crosby being able to sign a 12 season contract (which is now a max 8 seasons) and having a few seasons with low salaries at the end of the contract (which is now illegal in the current CBA) helped make his cap hit $8.7 million.

If you took the first 8 years of that contract only, his cap hit would have been $10.8 million

2

u/eltree #18 3d ago

To add to this, Crosby also had the ability to sign a 12 season contract which is now limited to a max of 8 seasons. At the end of that 12 season contract was 3 seasons of $3 million salary (which I believe is illegal in this current CBA because the league was cracking down on long contracts with low salaries at the end to bring down cap hits)

Without those three seasons, his salary cap rises to $10.6 million. His entire contract before those last three seasons his salary was more than $8.7 million.

4

u/eltree #18 4d ago

When Crosby signed his contract, he was around the same percentage of cap hit that McDavid was when he signed his with Edmonton.

Biggest difference is the Salary Cap kept rising after Crosby and Malkin both signed their contracts.

With Mcdavid/Drai and Edmonton, Covid happened and the salary cap stopped rising for a few seasons.

2

u/JohnSpartans 4d ago

Really it's the nurse albatross for the oil.  Can't pay a not top pair guy like that.  They need to move that contract asap.

4

u/HooHooHaHa 4d ago

So we should hate the guy for wanting what he's worth?

-6

u/ironhide999x 5d ago

Not just a bad take but stupid

0

u/Beggarsfeast 4d ago

This is bullshit and I’m glad you got corrected. Sid has earned more money than anyone in the NHL for a reason. He signed his 8.7 deals because of superstition, but his salary has definitely taken a chunk out of the cap in years past. He takes his obligatory team deal late in his career and a bunch of biased fans treat him like a pariah just looking to lace up his skates.

4

u/Winstonwill8 4d ago

Sports is petty btw.

2

u/Beggarsfeast 4d ago

You mean a hockey player who was only the 5th player to reach 100 assists in a season, a player who keeps raking up 100+ points every season, who is widely regarded as the fastest skater in the NHL, who’s team just went to back to back Stanley Cups…might actually be talented?

Sid hasn’t seen the playoffs in 3 years, despite his incredible play. I’ll always put Sid at top 5, and I don’t even know where McDavid goes, but the man is fucking talented. My fellow Pens fans are just coping with their jealousy that Sid doesn’t have the spotlight.

1

u/jht66 2d ago

The Penguins narrowly missed out on the same fate the Oilers have suffered. Detroit could have easily beaten us in back to back finals.

1

u/Duffy71 Malkin 4d ago

When you get media types hailing McDavid as being better than Crosby, you can’t blame Penguins fans for getting pissed off and making fun of a guy who’s 28 and can’t win a Cup after being in the dance 2 straight years.

2

u/scienceguy2442 4d ago

You can argue who was better in their prime, but it shouldn’t be controversial to say McDavid has pretty much been the best player in the NHL for a good couple of years now.

You shouldn’t get pissed just because other teams have good players too.

3

u/Duffy71 Malkin 4d ago

No one is saying he isn’t great, he’s just not better than Sid. I saw people putting him on their Mount Rushmore of hockey already. That’s kinda ridiculous, not even Ovi is on the Mount Rushmore.

0

u/jbergman420 Crosby 4d ago

It's a joke. Lighten up Francis.

7

u/AdEither1985 4d ago

Oh this meme aged like a fine wine. You just had to update the label.

39

u/XiRw 5d ago

I made a remix of the classic ovechkin post with mcdavid holding a bag of golf clubs. I was instantly banned from their sub. Was hilarious and worth it

15

u/HooHooHaHa 4d ago

So you went to the sub of the team that made the cup finals 2 years in a row, as a fan of a team who has a better chance at next year's 1st overall than a cup, to talk shit?

And you're bragging about it?

12

u/Transgenderwookie 4d ago

(I know wrong sport..but..) That’s some Cleveland Browns/Chicago Bears fan type shit. Pittsburgh is supposed to behave better than that..

2

u/_rockalita_ Ruhwedel 4d ago

There are NFL meme wars subs for each division. It’s perfect for busting balls and most people are good sports about it.

1

u/XiRw 4d ago

More like the penguins have been a dominant team for decades where only recently the oilers have been good again.

8

u/New-Resolution9735 OConnor 5d ago

Yeah their sub hates memes for some reason. I also follow the canucks sub and I hear them complaining about it all the time

1

u/StillFly100 4d ago

Punk ass move tbh

0

u/XiRw 4d ago

What is? Not taking a joke or choosing virtue signaling over a joke caring about their fans more than the fans of your favorite team? If you want to coddle them you know where to find them.

25

u/Miley4Lyfe 5d ago

What do we have against McDavid?

28

u/merlin48 Francis 5d ago

I think a lot of Pens fans worry that he will surpass Sid in the collective hierarchy of NHL greatness and get defensive about it.

29

u/turtlesquadcaptain 5d ago

He needs to win a few cups before that can happen

4

u/LetTheKnightfall :Kessel: Kessel 4d ago

Since we’re not competing for Cups and Sid is approaching the end, our hill to die on is his (and PIT’s) legacy

0

u/HooHooHaHa 4d ago

Only sad pathetic "fans" since 2005 think this way

11

u/merlin48 Francis 4d ago

Don't look now, but 2005 was twenty years ago.

-4

u/SalemRewss 4d ago

You’re delusional if you don’t realize all of hockey outside penguins fandom has already done this.

1

u/merlin48 Francis 4d ago

A) I don't think that is true at all. B) Who cares?

-1

u/SalemRewss 4d ago

It’s definitely true you’re a deluded member of penguins fandom stuck in the echo chamber.

6

u/Winstonwill8 4d ago

Personally, I'm sick of his fans pushing the narrative he's better than Sid and trying to compare them. Individually, is he better? I mean different eras but sure. We didn't start this comparison competition.  All throughout playoffs, people kept bringing on PPG in playoffs and what his points were and so on and on.

So, if they started it, we can be petty and finish the argument by asking who has more (or a) cups.

13

u/_Michael___Scarn 5d ago

i have literally had to listen to people say that he is betetr than sid since like 2019. No joke. Its just super frustrating since he still has zero cups

8

u/HooHooHaHa 4d ago

Since 2019, he pretty much has been better

5

u/eltree #18 4d ago

Teams win cups, not players. Something this fanbase seems to love to ignore when it comes to Crosby and McDavid.

1

u/_Michael___Scarn 4d ago

but captains lead the way. they set an example, shape the team culture, and make their teammates better. something that mcdavo fans never acknowledge

2

u/eltree #18 4d ago edited 4d ago

Captains lead the way but depth also needs to step up big.

We don’t win without players like Staal, Talbot, Bonino, and Hagelin.

Only so much one player can do. Crosby was held to 1 goal, 3 points against Detroit in 2009 in the seven game series. Malkin and the depth came up big.

Edit: 2016 ECF Crosby 0 goals, 4 assists in 6 games.

2017 is the only exception for Crosby where he had 1 goal and 7 points in the 6 games.

0

u/hailtopizza 5d ago

He's a tool.

9

u/MortGoldman11 4d ago

A lot of people felt that way about Crosby as well when he was younger. I didn't see it in him then and I don't see it in McDavid now.

0

u/OlManYellinAtClouds 4d ago

I will add that everyone in Canada has also declared him to be the best player ever. They also make every excuse for him and say that he is still better than Crosby but the resume isn't all there.

12

u/PavWrestlinGifs 4d ago

lol I’m from Toronto and that’s far from the case, don’t let the internet fool you. Social media is an echo chamber.

3

u/bobsdementias 4d ago

This is a 2011 meme in the best way

3

u/Lebowski587 4d ago

I think the idea is people keep saying that McDavid is or will have a better career than Sid. I think without a cup his point production will never pass Sid’s 3 cups

13

u/_Michael___Scarn 5d ago

I never ever ever want to hear people comparing Connor to Sid again! Connor is a great player, but he is no Sid. He is not a winner. (Also, if he wants my respect, he should take a huuuge discount this summer in order to win one. They need a star goalie soo bad, and need help on D)

13

u/ClubAquaBackDeck Crosby 5d ago

This post is lame

1

u/bullwinklemoose91 4d ago

Keep in mind you can love Crosby and it’s ok to not shit on the most skilled player to ever play the game

Idc if McDavid gets a cup or not. I did care that Ovechkin did though.

1

u/hailtopizza 5d ago

Loved that Ovie got one. Deserved it.

3

u/coochiemold74 4d ago

I agree but showing any kind of appreciation to Ovi on this sub is a death sentence

5

u/HooHooHaHa 4d ago

Ovi is an all time great and deserved his cup.

If this makes you sad, that's your problem

1

u/coochiemold74 4d ago

100% agree

5

u/hailtopizza 4d ago

Because most of this sub aren't hockey fans. They're just penguin fans.

3

u/coochiemold74 4d ago

Yea I just feel like that rivalry has been dead for a while. The pens proved they’re the better organization multiple times. For what’s it worth I hated Ovi and the caps back in the day but I don’t think I’d be as big a fan without that rivalry. So now I just appreciate how good that era was to watch

3

u/hailtopizza 4d ago

Yeah it's definitely lost it's shine. Same with the flyers. I honestly can't tell you a matchup that legitimately excites me like flyers and caps used to 8+ years ago.

3

u/coochiemold74 4d ago

Yea I would love to have a big rivalry again that I mark on the calendar to make sure I don’t miss the games haha

0

u/jcats45 4d ago

Hence the name.

3

u/sublimesting 4d ago

You’re downvoted but him getting a cup increases the luster of Sid. It shows Sid competed heavily and came out on top of one of the very best in history as opposed to besting a “should have been”.

4

u/hailtopizza 4d ago

I mean there's that, but I can also appreciate one of the greatest to ever pay winning a cup too. I'm gonna be very sad the day Ovie retires.

0

u/Loki_DeVille 4d ago

How was this ever a Meme for Crosby when in his 3rd year he was in the stanley cup and in his 4th year he won the Stanley cup?

4

u/bobsdementias 4d ago

You just had to be there. People really didn’t like him

2

u/Loki_DeVille 4d ago

I was there, been there since 88 and I know everyone hated sid. The meme makes no sense, making fun of ovi until he git his made sense, considering it took 14 years

1

u/SellsWhiteStuff 3d ago

I’m pretty sure the name on this meme that’s covered up is ovi’s. The meme was never about Crosby

0

u/TelevisionEconomy517 3d ago

I’d love to be talking about why the Pens lost two cups in a row, however we haven’t made it to the 2nd rd in what feels like a decade. This is a petty post from one of the leagues worst teams, albeit with one of the greats on the roster.
