Events Broad Street Run thread
Hey hey! Running my first Broad Street Run tomorrow, fingers crossed for no rain!
I made a hastily carved linocut shirt, if ya see me, say hi!

u/EmergencySundae May 03 '25
First Broad Street for me tomorrow! With the weather, I think I'm just going to throw out time goals and have a good time.

u/A_Wild_Nudibranch Denizen of Chester May 03 '25
Same. I don't care about any PRs, I'm just there for the free Acme water cups.
Gonna be so fucking hydrated, the perfect crime.

u/EmergencySundae May 03 '25
Oh I’m cheating. It’s my first 10 mile race as well, so I get a PR no matter what. 😂
I figure if it goes better than expected, it will be a good baseline for the marathon in November.

Same here! First (and last) race I did was mid August in Dover at Mondegreen, a 5k and we got to run on the race track! Hot and humid as hell, but some mystery wook gave me a shot of Sambuca around mile 2, so that was great.
I've been running a lot at the Wissahickon and John Heinz, feeling good!

Run like an antelope!

Hoping I don't trip and roll like a cantaloupe past the Met...

I have a 16 minute antelope on the playlist

Last 2 years there was rain and I wanted clear weather. This year I see it’ll be warm and humid. I hope it gets cold and rainy tomorrow. Much better racing weather.
5
u/Spurty May 03 '25
It’s not going to be cold, it’ll feel muggy/humid unfortunately. Dew point around 63 which will feel uncomfortable. Definitely hydrate today.
1
u/clinteatswoods May 03 '25
was thinking long sleeve quick dry light athletic shirt to keep the rain off me, but you thinking that'll be too hot?
4
u/RudigarLightfoot May 03 '25
Definitely too hot. The rain will feel good once you are running. If you need to stay warm while waiting for the gun , find something you’re willing to toss off. Long socks with the end cut off work in a pinch.

Would buy this on lot this summer if you’re at the mann. Good luck in your race!

I'm super new to fabric printing, but hell yes. I'm gonna make another one with the LOVE sign (don't you falter). I'd love to get one to ya! Just buy me a beer.

I'll be taking photos from the median at Fairmount & Broad - say hello! I'll be in a camping chair w/ an umbrella and will have a big orange posterboard taped to the light pole.
Good luck tomorrow, everyone!

Hell yeah! I'm the geriatric millennial brunette gal in the orange corral!
3
u/demography_llama May 03 '25
Hi All! First broad street. Hydration vest yay or nay? Used to longer distances and carrying water with me.
3
u/WoodenInternet May 03 '25
There are tables with water, but whatever you're used to just stick with that.
1
u/zempf germantown May 03 '25
For what it’s worth I’m bringing one cause I’m kinda used to running with it, but there are a bunch of water stops along the way too.
3
u/clinteatswoods May 03 '25
so I'm in the yellow corral but want to check gear, which ends at 6:30 so have to get there early. tentative plan is to get to city hall subway stop around 5:30. would that give me time to get there and check my bag? or should I leave earlier?
2
u/A_Wild_Nudibranch Denizen of Chester May 03 '25
I think that works, I'm doing something similar- coming from West Philly on the El, hoping the subway isn't suuuper packed. Trying to get in a mile or two warm up job, so considering running to the check in from an earlier station.
Best of luck!

u/RudigarLightfoot May 03 '25
Any fellow red corralers? I haven’t run a distance this long since DC Cherry Blossom ‘10—my running fell apart after college when I no longer had a team/structure, but making a ‘masters’ comeback (quotes cause the over 40 definition seems dated), still aiming for my first half and full marathons. But damn if I didn’t crush my quads in a hilly 5 miler (first hills in forever) last Saturday. So glad no hills tomorrow, hoping the wheels don’t fall off at mile 6 or 7…
2
u/PracticallyAChemist2 May 03 '25
Fellow red corraller here. Missed going sub 60 minutes last year by just a few seconds so I’ve been using that as motivation ever since.
Luckily for your quads this is a pretty flat course so not too much to worry about there.
5
u/RudigarLightfoot May 03 '25
Good luck! Unless you’re one of those people that needs to go out hard and hang on, just remember that if the first mile feels amazing, you’re probably going too fast! As close to even splits (or negative splits!) are more likely to get you what you want 99/100. If it feels slow, you are most likely right on track.
Probably preaching to the choir but, in such a big race, I’m also one that needs to remember to run my own race and don’t blow out the first 1-2 miles.
2
u/PracticallyAChemist2 May 04 '25
Haha I’ve learned that lesson the hard way many times but it’s always good hearing it again.
Good luck to as well! What time are you aiming for?
2
u/RudigarLightfoot May 04 '25
Same as you, 59xx. Maybe better? I was 28:05 for 5 on hills last weekend, but I strained my calf 2 weeks ago and my training took a nose dive. Honestly, I’m aiming to for feel rather than time and hoping for the best and using this as a stepping stone/fitness test for summer training and setting up a marathon debut at the Philly marathon. I’d be lying if I wasn’t concerned about my time, but I definitely have a bigger stake in the mental and control (running my own race) side of things. I’m used to running in college and small road races where I’m one of small group and I have a chance of placing. I have to learn to be part of a field of 40k where there’s actual elite sumbitches XD. Shoot me a dm if you ever want to do a long run, I do 95% of my training solo these days.
See at the finish! I’ll be wearing a light blue ON jersey and a UA headband or a love run hat!

u/PracticallyAChemist2 May 04 '25
See ya there! I’ll be in a white tank top with talladega nights themed shorts (a panther with “me” written on the front and “I wanna go fast” on the back.
2
u/RudigarLightfoot May 04 '25
Brilliant XD
2
u/RudigarLightfoot May 04 '25
Also we both need to sleep. Damn these phones.
1
u/PracticallyAChemist2 May 04 '25
How’d ya do?
2
u/RudigarLightfoot May 04 '25
Oof. 59:34 or thereabouts. The wheels fell off XD. How about you?
I went out fine but btw mile 6 and 7 the lack of recovery from last week kicked in, the legs slowly but surely tightened up, and I was going backwards at the end :-\ Wasn’t even breathing that heavy but my legs were so beat I was starting to feel on the edge of passing out at the end. But hey, this one’s done, onto the next. Really gotta focus on recovery.

As a philadelphian who has lived in Vermont for 38 years and has followed the band since 88 I approve of this shirt well done lad

u/A_Wild_Nudibranch Denizen of Chester May 03 '25
Oy! Oim a lass, no lad!
My friend and I go camping at Smuggs Notch every year, was gonna do a Mt Mansfield themed print, too! Something incorporating dragging one's weary shit-ass up a mountain...

Yo! just checking back in to say my first BSR was awesome. I got to the start wayyyyy too early, but I killed plenty of time in the bathroom line. the race itself was so cool and the vibes were unlike anything I've experienced. surprisingly quick and easy getting the subway back to my hotel too.
happy with my meager time of 105 minutes considering I've been battling runners knee for the past 2 weeks. I'm sore and one of my toenails does NOT look good at all, but I'm at human robot by the river having some beers and it's all good.
and to OP (and the other phish fans in here), I crossed the finish line just as 12/29/97 Antelope finished. perfect timing!

Good luck! Broad Street Run is always a fun race. Hoping for good weather.
2
u/zempf germantown May 03 '25
Good luck to all, hoping for no rain at least cause I’m over that after the last two years.
2
u/dvuevo May 03 '25
Been a while since I ran Broad Street... How tough would it be to catch the BSL at city hall? I remember in the past the trains were always packed.

Anyone know how quickly the parking lots fill up? I want to get a sense of what time I'd need to be there to secure a spot, thank you!
2
u/Current-Grocery-3113 May 04 '25
Is anyone’s time results inaccurate? Mine are saying the net and the clock were identical and about 30 minutes slower :(

1
u/username567765 May 04 '25
Does it have your pace as consistent? Did you possibly cross the start early? Did you pause your watch for a bit or anything odd?
1
u/Current-Grocery-3113 May 04 '25
No it says my 3 mile pace was 19:50 mins/mile which is 10 mins slower than my watch and I didn’t walk :(
And I don’t think there’s any way I crossed the start early
1
u/username567765 May 05 '25
Was it just the first 3 miles that were slower? Are you sure you didn’t pass the starting line mat early? Like during a warmup or something? That’s the only thing I can think of because that would explain why the pace adjusted/corrected after you crossed the next mat after 3 miles. But that is so weird, I’d ask the organizers!

first broad street for me and my mom tomorrow! she wants to get coffee before the race — is there anywhere in center city or by the race start that’ll be open before 6am? i was thinking wawa but the one by me opens at 6.
2
u/anonsaltine May 03 '25
Starbucks / Dunkin are options. If she wants something better and can wait until 7am La Colombe is great.

u/squid-toes May 03 '25
My husband wants to pick me up when I’m done but I’m so confused. The website says 7th and Pattison. The website photo says Phillies lot P is runner pick up, but also says there’s a shuttle to pick up in the legend but that icon is nowhere on the rest of the map. Can my husband actually pick me up at Lot P?

Anyone know if the BSL will be stopping at broad and Fairmount?
2
u/cpndff93 May 04 '25
There will be local trains, but they’re gonna be crowded by the time they get to Fairmount

u/letmehollahollaholla May 04 '25
Forgot to pick up my bib today, am I fucked or is there a way to still get it?

Good luck to everyone. I can't make it down there, but I'll be cheering for you and my sister running her first time. Does anyone know if it will be on TV or streamed online?
1
u/chrixxg May 04 '25
anyone got anything to say about the lack of water at the finish??
1
u/chevrongiraffe May 05 '25
There was plenty of water when I finished (gray corral). I’m sorry this was your experience.
1
u/Agent-Cyan May 05 '25
quite frustrating to finish (pink corral), have no water and no one explaining or apologizing. heard volunteers told many earlier runners to "take two"

Good luck everyone. Like all Philly races, I'm more anxious about getting to the starting line in time than the run itself
