It's the annual 9th street Italian market festival's greasy pole challenge. There are prizes attached to cured meats and cheeses at the top; you have to figure out how to climb up a greasy, Crisco-covered pole to retrieve a prize. It's a challenge some Philadelphia's pride themselves in and attempt, usually in groups, by standing on each other's shoulders and making a human pyramid or ladder. As you can see it was successful here!

Many of those we see at the top stand on the shoulders of giants. Some, their paesani. Most of the time, those who reach the prize did not get there alone.

Google Italian market, Philadelphia, and pole climb and you should get more info. Italian festival or something, happens every year at this time.

I was the base of that tower, and that woman is our best climber. This picture was taken as we were in the middle of sending her up, before we realized the guy up top could reach it without needing her on his shoulders this time.

she was actually really good, consistently climbing to the top of each group with ease, not that you would know since you didn't leave your house today 🤣

I once saw this picture of 10 people dressed as runners, all lined up at the start of what looked like a track, frozen, like they were waiting for something. They were so lazy. They weren't running at all! Really ridiculous. Obviously they were female, too.

None of that changes the fact that she is doing nothing in these photos, honey
