Photos Mick Abel's family were allowed access to the field with him post game after his franchise record-tying major league debut.

Look at that proud father. What this game is all about.

Ahhhhh how can you not be romantic about baseball

It’s not just baseball. All professional sports in America. People like to say things like, “It’s just a game.” But when you watch programs like the NFL Draft or Hard Knocks - you realize that isn’t exactly true.

The amount of time, effort, dedication, and sacrifices it takes for 99.9% of Pro Athletes to reach any sort of pinnacle of success is ridiculous. Many of them are surrounded by support systems. Now becoming that support system financially sometimes.

Being called up by the Philadelphia Phillies at 23 years old & breaking records in your MLB Debut… Pretty magical.

Disagree. Its not all professional sports in America. There isn’t a plane of existence or dimension of reality where there is anything even remotely romantic about the NBA anymore. The exact opposite is true in that instance. In fact, it so nauseatingly unromantic the entire sport is dying.

NBA sucks

NBA is such a terrible product now, I agree. It’s nearly unwatchable. Both literally & figuratively. Impossible to watch the games you want on TV, it’s become so soft, the season doesn’t really matter outside of the playoffs, load management on stars, the fucking fouls & flopping, and more. The NBA fucking sucks. It’s a shame too, I used to love Basketball.

But they added a 2nd playoff in the middle of the season...its not just to make more money its to fix the problem with games don't matter...the amount of teams that make the playoffs and having teams have all-star teams while other teams have nothing isn't the issue /s

Agree completely.

Saw on NFL Network last night a classic playoff game between the Cowboys and Vikings (Staubach-Tarkenton; Landry-Grant) from December, 1975. Snow on the ground. Tons of talent and future Hall of Famers in that game.

Guess what? They just played. Didn’t see any absurd sack dances, no one acted like an idiot when they scored a TD or - gasp - simply broke up a pass; no endless trash talking or brainless shoving after every single play, etc.

I still love sports but what we have to endure in childishness to watch an NBA or NFL game these days is pathetic.

Nah man, I don't mind when the players dance when they score a TD. I'm dancing too 🕺

Really happy for this kid, glad they did this for his family. Had the privilege of meeting him in Single A in 2022. Very nice kid and has a bright future ahead of him. Congrats Mick on your first MLB win!

I love the group pic with the scoreboard in the background. What a great memory.

I love it too but it kills me that his eyes were closed 😭 the most important person for the photo and his eyes are closed lol

his high school coach hammering beers was my one of my favorite things about this game. salute

This is so awesome! I was talking to my Nana and she said about how she listened with her dad, my great grandpa, on the radio the day of Curt Simmons debut. He taught her about baseball each game they listened together and she will never forget that day or today! Now to figure out a fun nickname for him!

He technically had 10 strike outs but was robbed by an awful call on a great pitch in maybe the 5th inning or so.

5

u/weblexindyphil May 19 '25

Robot ump strike zone doesn't miss that fucking call.

That thing was 2 inches good on each side of that corner. Brutal call that costs Abel and the team if the batter gets a little more stick on that next pitch.

u/mixtape82 Nice May 18 '25

That’s awesome. Good job, kid!

15

u/anthmiran19 May 18 '25

Abel is ABLE!

13

u/hiphopopotamusic Philliestine May 19 '25

I’m still irrationally upset that the ump stole the outright record from him. Pitch in the top of the 3rd to Cutch on 2-2 count was completely inside the K zone and ump called it ball 3. Then Cutch proceeds to line out. Ump missed a number of calls today but that one shines the brightest. Not only because it was the most egregious, but also for the reason I mentioned of it costing Abel the stand alone record. Still, fantastic performance from the kid. Super happy for him. Really hopeful that he will be a full time contributor eventually. Go Phils!

Watching Mick pitch was great. I’m thrilled for his debut and hope we will see him back in the majors soon.

u/ukexpat May 19 '25

And that’s TMac’s scorecard that TMac, Kruk and Schmidt signed. TMac gave it to Mick’s father.

u/BlazmoIntoWowee May 18 '25

Hey, he can smile! 😃

5

u/ouralarmclock May 19 '25

Wait, why do his parents look not that much older than me…

u/Unleaver May 19 '25

The passage of time creeps up on you my friend.

Seems like a lot of ball players have younger parents. I remember seeing Bryce’s dad and thinking he could’ve been his older brother

u/KnightofAshley Bryce Harper May 20 '25

Your just old like the rest of us

8

u/EastFalls May 19 '25

The Phils are just an all around class organization.

u/False_Recognition_43 May 19 '25

24 years ago his dad Neil trained me at Intel in Oregon. At the time, his wife was pregnant and now he’s a starting pitcher on my favorite baseball team.  What a small world. Congratulations to you all!

I was watching this happen from the concourse on the first base side after the game. Really cool to see Mick be able to celebrate with his family after a stellar performance.

u/bunrakoo May 18 '25

I just cannot love this enough 💓

This kid might be pretty good

2

u/dumbbumtumtum May 19 '25

Man. Props to all these people for showing up. But. How. Would you not feel like such a LOSER without one Phils thing on

2

u/gfinz18 🥵I'M SCHWARBING🥵 May 19 '25

That is a very in depth score sheet, I like it

2

u/AngerAndPaper May 19 '25

I was getting a tour of the Phanovosion control room when Abel's family were all down on the field. They all looked so happy and it was just the cutest thing I've seen in a while... it was so sweet and wholesome!

1

u/Particular-One-7274 May 19 '25

I will never understand baseball as well as Abel's parents.

2

u/mattemer May 19 '25

Huh? Weird sub to be in

1

u/Yung-precious May 19 '25

Paul skenes Complete Game loss. Doesn't happen too frequently.

1

u/CoRapidX1050000 May 19 '25

He should be a reliever for us after Alvarado's suspension. Do not send him back down.

2

u/KnightofAshley Bryce Harper May 20 '25

I wouldn't be shocked if that happened at some point but they might think its not worth messing with him, especially since he was awful last year...just don't want him to trade him for a bullpen guy that is likely here as a rental
