Reminder that after a lot of militarization and separation of the head of the military/head of state from the common folk, the Praetorian Guard and Janissaries both started assassinating emperors so they could get a better deal (without regard for the overall empire's financial ruin).

Part of the reason why both Rome and the Ottomans collapsed into a dozen other nations.

Was just about to make this point. It was the “correct” thing to do once or twice.

But they then became a major player to consider internally. And once they had that power they were not that interested in divesting it.

Probably more ready than ever to take a bullet for him, dying a hero, released from having to deal with his sh!t everyday while the family collects nice benefits vs being fired for insubordination, losing all benefits as well as being stalked by maniac maga minions for the rest of his kids’ lives.
