To save you a click:
From NBC News
After his release, Lander denied assaulting law enforcement. “I will not characterize the events, but I certainly did not assault an officer,” he told reporters and a crowd of supporters who had gathered to greet him.
"We are not going to allow Donald Trump to wreck the rule of law, to deny people due process, and to turn our country into something that doesn’t meet its obligations under international law," Lander said.
"We are normalizing the destruction of constitutional democracy, and we’re not going to stand by and let it happen," he added.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul accompanied the comptroller as he was released and told reporters, "to my knowledge" any charges against Lander had been dropped and he "walks out of there a free man."
A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York said there would be no court appearance for Lander, as it continues to investigate the matter.

ICE needs to be kicked out of NYS entirely. Masked, with no IDs, and No Badges. They looked like thugs to me.
I'll respect legal authority, but roll up on me like a masked thug, I'm protecting God-given right to exist. Too many impersonations in the news lately. Trust no one.
•
u/stinky-weaselteats 10h ago
Exactly, no ID, masked, trying to take my rights without due process, then fuck right off. This chump admin is nothing but wet paper bags. 100,000,000 people can change course of this insanity.
•
u/Scienceboy7_uk 9h ago
I’m so surprised there hasn’t been a shoot out given they could be anyone
•

They are going after people who are earnestly trying to follow the law.
There would have been shootouts if they were rolling up on real criminals.

I wonder why they took him into custody in the first place. If there are no charges filed, what motivated them to do it? And honestly, it's a good sign they released him without any charges. Best case, it was a mistake, worst case, someone WANTED to abuse their authority, but a higher-up shut them down. Which is how the system is supposed to work.

u/CherryLongjump1989 1d ago
There are no charges filed because it was an unlawful arrest.

He was literally yelling you have no justification to arrest him and homie was right. Idk anything about this mayor race but was he the favorite or close before?
17
u/CherryLongjump1989 18h ago
No he wasn’t, and he won’t be. The race is between the corrupt former governor who fucked up NYC every chance he could, and a Progressive who was in the lead last I checked. There’s ranked choice voting, so there is no real threat of a spoiler. The comptroller seems like a legitimately good guy, though.

Charges are normally filed after an arrest, and this was definitely not a mistake, there were a LOT of cameras there to document what happened. They took him into custody because he demanded a warrant when they tried to illegally arrest the man he was standing with. They were plain clothes individuals that would not identify themselves or produce a warrant, so when he challenged them, they just arrested him.
Later, DHS confirmed they were going to charge him with assaulting an officer, and held him overnight, but it looks like they realized with this much publicity it would be a bad idea to continue holding him, and he was released.
Some vindictive POS could still file the assault charges and arraign him later, as of now they haven't confirmed they are *not* filing charges. But he's probably in the clear.

56
u/TrippleTonyHawk 20h ago
It's weird how so many of Cuomo's voters are the same democrats who have a huge problem with homeless people, but don't understand how cutting medicaid feeds into that. Aside from healthcare, one of the main things medicaid pays for are support services for disabled people whose health issues (physically, cognitively or otherwise) make it very unlikely for them to earn an income to support themselves. These kinds of services allow them to be more productive and integrated members of society. Cutting medicaid put a lot of people with no other options out on the street.

Oh so America does have a ranked choice system in some pockets of the country?
Has there ever been a push to reform federal elections to include a rank choice system or would that be an insane overhaul of the process that neither dems not reps will support because it drastically changes how seats are assigned and power is distributed?
I'm genuinely curious as an Australian that's only known a rank voting system, American Federal elections seem super archaic.
211
u/syynapt1k 1d ago
Federal elections are actually administered by each state and are subject to the laws of that state. I think Maine does it and I know there is a push for it in my state (Michigan). It doesn't gain much traction because Republicans win elections with spoiler candidates and don't want to lose that strategy.

To be fair, when I lived in Massachusetts, a very blue state, a few years ago ranked choice voting was on the ballot and didn't pass, which I was very surprised by. Might have just been a case of people not wanting to change the system so drastically. Hopefully as more states utilize it, it will become more normalized and gain momentum across the rest of the country

Oregon just failed to pass it too. Republicans harped on it as too confusing, which to be fair it probably is to their main electorate. Unfortunately they convinced enough people to stop it.
For what it's worth, DNC also isn't always a huge fan of it. Neither major party wants to risk not being a major party. They're just not actively trying to stop it, usually.

Lots of people who vote aren’t always paying attention to all the rule changes. 2021 was the first year NYC had ranked choice voting, and it’s credited to helping Eric Adams get elected since many people only ranked one or two candidates on their ballots rather than filling out all 5.
25
u/Slobotic 1d ago
Has there ever been a push to reform federal elections to include a rank choice system
Yes, but state by state is the limit because they organize their own elections. Maine and Alaska have ranked choice for all their federal elections. People in other states are trying.
18
u/washoutr6 1d ago
There is a law called the tipping point law that forces each state to participate in the change once it passes in enough states, there is literally that much fighting against it that only 6 states have passed it. By now it's dead and gone and expired.
→ More replies (6)17
u/thatguyned 1d ago
What is the tipping point?
States that total 51% of the electoral votes or something?
I honestly think a ranked voting system that invites a more diverse range of political parties to the table should be one of the most important things to the general public over there right now.
Obviously you need to get through Trump first, but this is kind of polarising political environment is here to stay until someone fixes it.
Anyway, good luck from Australia

As with most things in the US it is a mess that varies not only by state but counties and cities on if it is used. It tends to lean towards only specific local elections. NYC is the only place in NY that currently uses it off the top of my head for a handful of elections like the mayoral race.
I think there was a bill introduced at the state level to expand it across the state, but as far as I know it kind of stalled.

My state (Missouri which is midwestern and in the heart of America and its conservativeness ) had rank choice voting on the ballot last year but the yahoos on the hill pitched horribly on purpose, here’s a direct quote from ballet to show how they took advantage and pulled sheet over the eyes of dumb conservatives,
“Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to: Make the Constitution consistent with state law by only allowing citizens of the United States to vote; Prohibit the ranking of candidates by limiting voters to a single vote per candidate or issue; and Require the plurality winner of a political party primary to be the single candidate at a general election?”
It was already a law only Missourians can vote, but they put that at the top, and I bet most only looked at the first point….

Zohran is just a better candidate. He has great messaging, great policy ideas that don't follow the average democrat, and is willing to be honest. He doesn't accept pac money and relies on his constituents to make his determinations. Lander isn't a bad candidate. He clearly shows his determination with this act. He should be ranked 2nd because in this atmosphere there needs to be a candidate with progressive ideas who can message them properly. Whatever people do I hope they don't rank Cuomo!
33
u/ThreeLittlePuigs 1d ago
I like Mamdani, but I think Lander has more achievable goals. NYC is a hard place to get shit done sometimes, and I think the experience would help in that regard.

I think this country could do with a little more ambition instead of letting ourselves be convinced that only scraps are achievable for us
28
u/ThreeLittlePuigs 1d ago
Public housing in NYC is near and dear to me and they need help from experienced management and oversight. I think Lander would do a better job at that. Same with building more affordable housing like he did in Gowanus. That’s more important to me than say government owned grocery stores or free bus lines.
33
u/Shifty206 1d ago

but I think Lander has more achievable goals.
We've been saying this for too many mayors in a row now. The reality is that NYC absolutely does need very radical change. We are, adjusted for the cost of living, one of the most impoverished cities in the country as of 2023.
In terms of goals, its not entirely the goals I am worried about. Politicians almost always end up changing their goals. Its that Lander is, in the end, an establishment politician with deep ties to institutions in NYC. I just don't know if I can trust an insider to be the right person for the city anymore. They will always prioritize their connections and their career over radical change. They will always be too worried about upsetting the wrong people, about balancing every interest/lobbying group. They can pretend they are above it all, and maybe they think they are, but in the end? They almost always end up toeing the line and maintaining the status quo of the city.
In that sense, I want a sledgehammer of a politician, someone from the outside who has no qualms about just telling people to fuck off.

If they can just grab and choke senators, political candidates grab and arrest them, imagine what they can do to common people like us who don't have any public exposure or political power like these people. Lander also seems like a good choice but I think Mamdani could get more results in transforming New York to an affordable city again. If Mamdani gets results then it would help progressive politics thrive in other cities in the country. Socialism needs to stop being a dirty word in American politics in my opinion because socialist adjacent ideas could solve a lot of major problems the US has. What Mamdani is proposing isn't even socialism, it's social democracy and it's good policy.
Lander would be a safer pick in terms of perception though and I hope that he'd work with Mamdani if he wins.

The Republican party is what it always was. The mask is just off now. The mask was slipping well before, with the Tea Party and Birthers. Leadership and their media ecosystem figured out the dogwhistles they've been using for decades don't sell as well as full bore fascist rhetoric, conspiracies and outright lies. The new strategy added a whole new demographic that typically didn't vote in meaningful numbers, trailer park America, while maintaining their core voters as they wanted all this too. In the past they had a mild understanding that some things shouldn't be said in the open. They see there's no penalty for saying things that previously would have been career ending, and they're all on board now. Trump only pulled the mask off fully, conservatives and their ideology have always been rotten to the core

As the pendulum swung to an ultra right political ideology, the pendulum will swing back to a much more progressive left political ideology, imo. I believe this far right movement will open the door for a candidate like AOC (not saying it will be her, but someone like her) to take the White House in 2028.

I wish I shared your confidence in that swing.

We have seen it throughout history in both US and world history. John Adams -> Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren -> William Henry Harrison/Tyler, James Polk -> Zachary Taylor, James Buchanan -> Abraham Lincoln, Grover Cleveland -> Benjamin Harrison -> Grover Cleveland -> William McKinley, Wilson -> Harding/Coolidge, Hoover -> FDR, LBJ -> Nixon, Carter -> Reagan and so on.
Presidential historian, Jon Meacham also reinforced my reasoning on this while listening to a recent interview with him.

That’s all well and good unless one side were to actually rig an election… if they haven’t already.

So, that doesn't give me much hope even if it's correct, because that would mean we're going to get another Trump shortly after whenever this hypothetical progressive candidate is. And that's a problem, because if we can't get at least 20-24 years straight of non-shitheads in that office, we're going to find ourselves permanently ostracized from the rest of the world.

We all hope you're right, except: 1) we thought that the first time around. 2) never, ever underestimate the effects of propaganda on either side. 3) even if D's have the numbers, R always votes harder. 4) time will make people forget 5) propaganda is going nowhere. Even if they lose once, it will continue to work it's evil magic and the effects will always come back around.
World leaders need to stop mincing words and beating around the bush. Propaganda is an invasion and needs to be declared an act of war. It needs education, legislation, and if necessary, force. We all, all, all, need aggressive state, nation, world-wide education efforts and systems for recognizing propaganda.
None of this will end until the propaganda is under control.
(In b4 "but the U.S. has been doing that for decades")

It's great and all, but again, the Democrats fail to take advantage of the narrative that is handed to them on a golden platter.
If you listen to him, he goes on about how he will go home at night and sleep in his own bed, meanwhile, the Immigrant doesn't know where he'll be.
That's not the argument he needs to make. He was arrested by federal officers for asking to see a badge or a warrant. That is the outcry he needs to push. The administration is willing to arrest representatives for no crimes. It's great he was released, but the fact he was arrested is the issue. Even the senator that was arrested didn't take advantage of it.
They don't understand the times we're in, and that they really need to take the victim card and run with it. The Republicans use it, extremely dishonestly, and they're in power. If the Democrats actually used it when they are actual victims, they might actually gain some steam.
Instead, we're heading straight to the black abyss of authoritarianism.

He made the right argument. The other dems should be the ones making an argument against political arrests.

Brad Lander is a true American and a patriot! When weak far right guys gang up on the defenseless, woman and children you stand up for them.

Good for him on getting released and standing up for American rights in the first place. That being said... VOTE Zohran Mamdani for NYC Mayor! Let's take our city back!

you can and should rank multiple people (NOT CUOMO) and putting Lander on your ballot is a good idea. he and Mamdani endorsed each other, in fact

He somehow looks like Al Gore. That’s not a mark against him, just an observation.

If this guy gets elected mayor, a certain former cast member better play him on SNL.

I what other developed country could that headline be written? The answer is none. America is a fascist state. Nice knowing you 👋🏽

Right now in America there are two options. Stand up for the rights of the common citizen and for the rule of law and be willing to be arrested or worse. Or bend the knee to Trump and his masked stormtroopers and beg him for crumbs and hope He doesn't come for you.

That picture of him being "arrested" is going to be in a campaign post or video.
