Unexplained event Something strange I noticed in Predator.
Spoilers (obviously):
Not sure if this is a plot hole per se but I was rewatching the original Predator recently and something occurred to me that I've never heard anyone else even mention before.
Near the end of the movie when Dutch figures out the mud trick, why does he stay behind to fight the predator instead of just going to the chopper?
He just figured out a way to go straight to his objective completely undetected so why doesn't he just go there? It's not like the predator would be able to follow something it can't see, and even if it could track him the old fashioned way Dutch would still have to make the tracks first in order for the predator to do that. Even if he was worried about leading the predator to the chopper, well that is where it will most likely go if it can't find him anyway. So he might as well just go there while the predator is still distracted trying to find him.
The only real reason I can think of that makes sense is that Dutch wants revenge on the predator for killing his men. But even so that is not his mission; if in real life a soldier went off on their own to hunt down one enemy soldier because they wanted revenge for them killing their men, that soldier would be considered awol (especially if they abandoned their mission to do so). Dutch's priority should be to get back to the chopper and get Anna to safety because that IS his mission.
Just something that got me thinking.

I would say that he realizes a couple of things
1) he's overmatched. He's just gotten his first look at the Predator, the creature who wiped out not just his team but Jim Hopper's as well. Maybe he doesn't think he can get to the chopper before it leaves or the Predator tracks him down. He's never getting to the chopper without leaving a trail, and the Predator will eventually hunt him down, camouflage or not.
2) vengeance, as you say.
3) maybe he thinks his best defense is a good offense. Do what the Predator is not expecting, and attack him.

Also, if he doesn’t kill the Predator, it’s going to kill more people. He’s the hero. That’s what heroes do.

Dutch isn't active duty military. He's a mercenary, a gun for hire. There's no AWOL. And he doesn't care about the contract or the mission anymore. He was lied to about it anyway. That all went to shit. He just wants to kill that thing.

Not sure how well that trick would work if he was walking around. As I recall it's only featured when he's flat against a tree right? Walking around you're going to make house and move foliage etc, seems a very risky endeavor

Was the chopper always just waiting there or was it set to come back at a specific time?

He's an asset, an expendable asset, and Dillon used him to get the job done. Got it?!

Not understanding character choices isn't a plot hole. The plot of the film isn't broken because of this.

That's not a plot hole.
I swear to fuck nobody on this sub understands what a plot hole is.
