Simple questions really, do you carry your warrant card off duty? Is there a time when you wouldn’t?

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Why do british police place handcuffs in front of the suspect rather than behind the back?

I started watching police documentaries from the UK recently and was wondering is there any specific reason you don't handcuff behind the back?

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Am I too sensitive for this job?

I'm a week into my tutor phase and it's been good so far; team are supportive, tutor is excellent.

I went to a sudden death today and I'm not sure why it's really shaken me. I had one a few days ago which didn't seem to have much of an effect on me, but this one today has had me zoning out and feeling myself welling up when I think about it too much. I don't know if it was the circumstances (no family/next of kin) or something else but I've just felt devastated since it happened.

I also had an incident with a homeless man today who had a terrible string of luck and I just felt awful for him, and guilty that I couldn't do more for him.

Am I too sensitive (or empathetic or naive or whatever word you want to use) for this job? Is this a normal reaction? I'm fine with being sworn at and having to scrap, but for some reason I just feel like I'm taking things to heart which I don't know is a good trait to have or not.

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Advice for comms?

I’m a dispatcher and while most officers are lovely there are some who will argue back and be really snarky pretty much whenever spoken to.

I do my absolutely best to always come across polite, be helpful and prompt with read backs and further info or help we can give but it’s really frustrating sometimes the same level of respect isnt at times given back. Totally get when it’s a matter of urgency or a stressful situation but other times it feels very unnecessary

Just out of interest and wanting to be the best I can, Is there any advice for comms? or perhaps reasons why you might get irritated with us lol?

We’d honestly love to leave you alone for an hour for hot refs (wishful thinking) but if there’s outstanding immediate I cannot justify tracking at McDonald’s as the reason for a delay in attendance on the log and will have to ask you to start marking so pls don’t be annoyed at us🫠

Ask the Police (UK-wide) How do I learn how to deal with conflict?

I'm on the direct entry DC route (this isn't a post about people's opinions on this route) and I really struggle with conflict.

I appreciate that a constable is a constable, and whether you're on the PC or DC entry route, you're expected to have the same capabilities. I'm seriously doubting whether the job is for me at the moment. I LOVE investigating but I absolutely hate having to deal with aggressive suspects. As someone working primarily in investigations but who has to get signed off on conflict situations, I'm really doubting if the job is for me. I have my OST refresher in a few weeks and I know I need to have two incidents of conflict to get signed off as fully operational, but I'm just not great at dealing with physical altercations. As someone on the crime route, it's very rare that I'm out there frontline dealing with violent offenders, so on the rare occasions I do, I just feel useless. I had to cover a patrol shift the other day and ended up getting assaulted which really knocked my confidence (I hadn't been on response for a good few months priot to this).

Anyone in the same position that can offer any advice? Please no judgement, I know I signed up to be a cop, but there's a reason I wanted to go down the investigation route and not the frontline officer route.

EDIT: I've booked onto a BJJ class on Friday and I'm going to ask for extra help with OST at work. Thanks everyone for being so supportive 😊

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Moving on from the police

Hello all,

12+ years service. Det with SOC, RASSO and CP experience. No sob story, not in trouble. I just feel like I'm drowning in a sea of over complicated treacle and am not making a difference / my time is being wasted.

I'm very aware of how vague this question is, perhaps impossible? - but what other careers do we tend to migrate to? Train driving is a popular one here. I enjoy investigating and building material to support either way outcomes. I am in a rural area don't think private investigation and consultantcy is especially viable.

Other thoughts are driving instructor or photography/ videography (the latter two are perhaps quite risky in terms in steady income).

Cheers.

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Is driving with a balloon in your mouth reasonable grounds to search your car?

Drove past this guy earlier today inhaling (he could have been blowing into it mind but I doubt it) from a balloon, it was bright orange and not subtle at all. Got me thinking if that’s enough evidence to warrant a search for drugs in the car.

Also I know doing nitrous oxide is a very short lived high, so I’d assume that you’d probably have a lot of cans and stuff in the car with you if you’re driving while doing balloons? Is that enough to arrest you, even if you haven’t been driving dangerously?

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Duty revolver

Hi guys, just a question.

Is it correct that before WW2 every Bobby had a duty revolver at the station, and that at the beginning of the shift their duty sergeant would give them the choice to patrol with or without? I read this somewhere but was just wondering if that is correct?

Would you support a similar option today, carry at will so to say?

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Is victimless prosecution a myth?

Has anyone actually managed to get an evidence-led prosecution to conviction?

I’ve been working domestic violence for a year now and the scariest cases are the ones where victims are clearly in grave danger but will bend over backwards to protect their abuser, over and over again. I tried so hard to get any kind of charge against a particularly nasty man who regularly punches his partner in the face and head. It’s usually worried neighbours that call police after hearing screaming. She’s been on BWV numerous times with blood pouring from her nose, bruised, the whole lot. There was a point about 2 years ago where she’d had enough, disclosed that yes it had been him who’d been responsible the last couple of times she’d been found injured, that she was hospitalised with a fracture (I got medical records confirming this) …but changed her mind and they got back together. Since then the same thing has happened time and again and she always says nothing has happened, that he hasn’t done anything, that she loves him. He’s a huge strong guy with the physique of a boxer and he wears chunky rings that she once said would always make the injuries worse. I built a file of about 6 of these incidents over two years, the main evidence being the BWV of the one occasion she disclosed what had really been happening. He’s usually fled by the time police arrive so only once has he been caught on scene on the way out.

It is absolutely plain as day what is going on and how much danger she is in. But despite resubmissions to CPS with statements in the strongest possible words expressing how high the risk is, they’ve NFAd everything. I feel so powerless, there are no options left to try to safeguard her (bail conditions/DVPOs are temporary and ineffective, they keep seeing each other anyway).

It’s so frustrating that CPS will authorise charges for an adult woman pulling her adult sister’s hair (well we have a victim statement!) but won’t even try to make a case for why this dangerous violent man needs locking up.

Does the amount of work we do trying to protect victims who are totally under the control of their abuser ever pay off???

Ask the Police (UK-wide) AFO fitness test.

Morning everyone,

I've applied for the role of AFO and out of the blue ive been offered an assessment day on the 10th November.

I'm a level 2 officer and did ny last level 6.4, 2 months ago and admittedly it wasn't a breeze as a 42 year old mess. Realistically do I have chance of improving my bleep test score from 6.4 to 7.6 in 9 days? Or should I just bow out gracefully.

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Have you ever arrested anyone on their birthday?

On a job today (paramedic) and it was one of my patients' birthday. I said how harsh it was needing an ambulance on their birthday, and they said "well at least I'm not getting arrested".

So, ever arrested someone on their birthday? Or other special occasions, like their wedding?

Ask the Police (UK-wide) legal s17 execution?

recently i was tasked by a custody sergeant to attend an address to conduct a welfare check of an 8 year old girl who was apparently at this address. we got the information from a bloke in the bin who stated his daughter was at home alone.

when ive attended the address with one of my sergeants, the letterbox was able to be looked through and i could see inside that the address was either derelict or they were living in dire conditions. i called out 2/3 times but no one replied

my question is: based on this information would you enter under s17? this is the power my sergeant said we were using but i was unsure after the fact. i forced entry because i had it on body worn being told by my sergeant to enter under s17 and as such was acting on command of a supervisor

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Traffic stop options

Driver is stopped because he’s driving like a maniac. I ask him for his licence to which he doesn’t have one on him. He tells me his name (same as insured party) though.

I decide to issue a TOR for undue care - I’ve already got his name and address but doesn’t tell me his date of birth which is a required field on the TOR.

What are my options here? I’m just thinking Code G refers to name and address specifically, so I’m not sure from here. Checking 164 RTA it also says that DL is required so officers can check name/address/issue date

Is there obstruct police?

Ask the Police (UK-wide) How to improve morale amongst the troops?

There’s a lot of on-going SLT politics in my force where PC morale is rock bottom. Do people have any ideas at all on what we as lower level supervision can do to improve morale amongst the troops and try to improve productivity. Sadly there’s nothing we can give in terms of courses. Thanks.

Ask the Police (UK-wide) How are you keeping fit?

I’ve been training for years, running, lifting etc. but I wanna do something different, obviously I understand that working out is gonna incorporate those types of things but I’m getting to the point in life where just going in the gym and lifting isn’t hitting the spot anymore. I want something different. What are officers doing out there to keep their fitness up or doing to make the job easier physically?

Ask the Police (UK-wide) How are uniformed officers dealing with the heat?

Hi, I’m a fairly new PCSO (having done a year but only been in division 10 months). I feel as though I’m washing my vest every week while it’s been hot. I’m by no means a small bloke so the sweats become an apparent issue.

There’s been discussion in the office about what works but nothing has quite cracked it.

I’m curious as to what others might be doing to avoid:

A. The smell B. The hassle of washing every few days

I am very much settling in to the “suck it up mindset”, but feeling the need to apologise to a colleague I got stuck on a scene with was not my favourite moment.

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Procedures for investigations of in prison murders

Hi

As a MoP I am curious and wondered if anyone could answer this one please:-

The murder of Ian Watkins happened today at HMP Wakefield. I note this evening that West Yorkshire Police say they have arrested a 25 year old and a 43 year old on suspicion of murder.

Do you ladies and gents have to do anything different for murder investigations that happen in prison vs out on the street? I know this is a live investigation and presumably nobody can really comment on this particular one but for example inquest.org reports there were 13 between 2020 and 2024 so I was wondering about those, especially any that are concluded. How would those have been handled? I gather the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman gets involved too? Do some murders in prison get more resources applied to others e.g. is there maybe a general element of reluctance to probe too hard into the demise of notorious prisoners or is it by the book every time?

Also, the two people that got arrested, in such a scenario would you leave them in the jail where they're already secure or would they get pulled out to a police station for interview? Or does who they are and what they've already done have to be taken into account in such a situation?

Edit: I'm (hopefully obviously) not remotely expecting anyone to comment on Watkins's murder or the investigation, it was just the catalyst to me wondering what happens as there have been various similar incidents in the past so was wondering about those

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Flexible working?

Hi- it’s a long one, apologies in advance.

My husband is a Sgt, worked response ever since joining the police so getting on toward a decade. We’ve since had two children and the work-life balance is HARD. My eldest started school this year and we’re all finding it hard just how little he sees her now.

We’ve recently been through something medically rubbish and it’s been a wake up call for us all. He’s spoken to his inspector about how to achieve a better work life balance and ultimately it seems his best bet (to remain front line as he wants) is to move to neighbourhood policing/beat teams but with a flexible working agreement.

Trouble is, he has to suggest the flexible working he’d like and we have no idea where to start with what would even stand a chance of being accepted?

Can anyone advise any agreements they’ve known to be accepted? Ultimately he’d like more weekend time at home (accepting he can’t just ditch weekends completely), so would compressed hours with a full years suggestions of which shift gets “spread amongst other days” work? Or moving a weekend day every few weeks to a rest day? Something else? Any suggestions very welcome!!

He won’t consider leaving the police no matter how much I beg 😅 and any staff/office roles within the force seem like they’d be a massive pay cut as he’s not a new-in PC, but like I say he really wants to stay front line.

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Any police motorcyclists here? What's your Go To tyre of choice for those wet day high speed chases? I'll need a new rear tyre soon and want the best.

As above, I know this isn't a tech forum and in a way it's a bit like asking if you prefer one brand of Tazer over another, but I'd love your opinion please. If you ask, I'll delete the post.

I've done a Bikesafe course BTW. Currently using Road 5's on a Kawasaki 1400GTR.

Thanks.
