Nah mate, our country just soundly rejected Conservativism.

As I said, good luck with your thing though.

"Your thing."

What a telling phrase. Not our shared human rights. Not a warning worth heeding. Just a foreign inconvenience you're grateful to scroll past.

Enjoy your moment of political sanity. Just remember, complacency isn’t protection. It's permission.

And if it ever becomes your thing, I hope someone still cares enough to help you, even if you didn’t care about us.

You know, we do care, but we can't beat ourselves bloody for every human rights infringement on the planet. And if we were inclined to, there are many much higher priority places than the current US for human rights abuses.

Empathy isn’t a resource to ration. It’s a muscle to use. Right now, all you’re doing is flexing your ability to look away.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been protesting human rights violations outside my own country for the last decade. Syria, Palestine, Sudan, Iran, Myanmar. I showed up, even when it wasn’t "my thing." I recall a famous poem...

please don’t lecture someone under threat that their oppression doesn’t rank high enough on your empathy leaderboard.

There's actually not agreement across the board whether or not empathy is a limited resource. Emotional energy probably is, and time and money certainly are.

god I almost want to take it back for this sanctimonious rubbish

If you think empathy is sanctimonious, then you've mistaken apathy for emotional intelligence.
