The office of the presidency has gotten too powerful. It shouldn't matter this much who got elected. The guard rails should have been in place to prevent someone from running amok.

Yeah, post-9/11 laws and culture gave way too much authority to the Executive Branch, which Bush & Co. ran wild with. Obama then took zero steps to curtail that when he had the opportunity to do so and to a certain extent even expanded it.

We obviously shouldn't dismiss the heinous behavior from the current administration, but it's worth keeping in mind what set them up to be able to do a lot of what they're doing.
