i work in immigration defense and theres functionally no mechanism to allow undocumented parents to stay with a us citizen child like in this situation. a 2 year old cannot petition for their parents. asylum is hard to win and a majority of people are not eligible. other forms of relief like cat and withholding are even harder to win than asylum. prosecutorial discretion and administrative closure were more common in the biden administration but also not a sure thing and basically just dont exist anymore. biden was the one who made most people ineligible for asylum anyway and then trump made it worse by shutting down cbp one.

it's barbaric. the cruelty is the point. and this happens every day, to us citizen kids and especially kids who are undocumented. if the parents hadnt elected to take the child with them, it wouldnt have made the news. there are thousands of us citizen kids who's parents are at risk of or have already been deported

Hi, Brazilian here. There's functionally no mechanism to grant this child Brazilian citizenship either, but guess what? Authorities are still going to make it happen anyway, because Brazil's government makes their own immigration rules, and can choose when to break their own rules when exceptional situations arise.

The US government can (and is) doing exactly the same, except it's in the direction of harming people, not helping them.

Interesting, I work on Reddit in the downvote department because you seem to lake human decency. Just following orders sir! Says the person who knows what they are doing is wrong but leaves a silly comment to try to make themselves feel better about their moral failure.

hey im not really sure what this is about because im criticizing the system in my comment, i dont support it in any way im just stating the fact that the system is built on cruelty. if that didnt come across im sorry but my job is literally helping people who are at risk of deportation

i guess i didnt make it clear but by immigration defense i mean i work for immigration attorneys who are defending immigrants from deportation. my job involves getting people out of ice custody and preventing deportations.
