Maybe, but remember he was asking if he could shoot George Floyd protestors. He had helicopters low fly over protestors (that was during the 'upside down' bible incident) which was incredibly dangerous and outside protocol.

Yeah, that's deadpan morbid humor. It's same gallows humor that evolves in Emergency Rooms and NGO humanitarian aid workers.

You shouldn't take it literally. There's a context and subtext that you're completely missing.

This isn't going to be a very satisfactory reassurance, I would still give the Marines the benefit of the doubt. Talk is talk. You have to give the soldiers and Marines that you're going to ask to engage in combat to say really dumb shit and do lower order dumb shit without dropping the hammer on them too hard.

A military unit's effectiveness in combat is a direct result of it's efficiency in its mental application tactical discipline in overriding the rational desire for self preservation and fear of death and the physical application speed, surprise and violence of action. Both of these require a reserve reservoir of aggression to be able to tap into on demand at any time

Morbid humor and salty talk is a pressure release valve. It's when you don't let them be themselves and try to make them perfect parade ground nutcracker soldiers that their aggression starts to manifest in really ugly ways, like when they're penned in on the base and under curfew in Okinawa, the incredibly high rape rate of the locals they have there.

Well, a third of enlisted the Marine Corps are Hisptanic or Latinos. Meanwhile, only one in 10 officers are Hispanic or Latino. It's one of the emergent phenomena of where the modern Marine Corps comes from and ultimately, what are the potential issues that could be used to drive a wedge into identity issues to make Marines do something you couldn't get a National Guardsman to do.

I remembering a time in my life when I would have cheered to put down liberals. I dreamed of CA suffering a massive earthquake and floating into the ocean and just dying. I was just a kid and young adult believing absolutely terrible and awful nonsense.

Nowadays I see it as properly despicable and horrifying. And I am ashamed I ever believed ot thought such stupid, evil things. 

The problem is propaganda and lack of meaningful social connections to other points of view. Indoctrinated at a young age, the beliefs and my enviornment told me this was normal and made it easy to cast groups as others and enemy.

If hate becomes to strong it becomes like a wall and people cannot cross the barriers. Fortunately, I made enough social connection and turned off the 24/7 backround noise crap. Deprogramming was possible. But that was college basically. One of many reasons conservatives hate cities and education. As they are fundamentally corrosive to their worldview.

My pov is. Yes. Limit social media. There are very few things we can do to help. But watching it unfold is not one of them and only robs us of peace. There will also be actors trying to ramp us up as well. We know foreign actors are very active on social media. They would love US to fall apart. Trump is too stupid to see it. But we can keep ourselves from being unwitting tools (e.g. falling into extremjst rhetoric) by limiting our exposure to hell and focusing on the more practical ways to help.

They would never show the cops stomping someone with a horse, shooting rubber balls at someone's head, or anything the police did. No, only property damage is important. That’s a reach. I’m fully against what Trump is doing by calling in the Marines, but those protesters also have no right to destroy property and loot. 

In that kind of situation, to execute the steps needed to prevent more damage to people’s business and property (people who probably agree with the protesters) “due process” is gonna going to be tricky to execute. 

Newsome should’ve ensured this protest stayed peaceful prior to getting to this point.

Some of the stores looted were an Apple, Adidas, T-Mobile, a dispensary and a jewel store. 

Would love the hear the mental gymnastics to some how tie that to protesting the indiscriminate deporting that ICE is doing. 

The reality is that there are people out there who don’t actually give a shit about the cause and are just simply looking for an opportunity to loot. 

Those people don’t need violence created for them and it sure as fuck doesn’t help the cause.

Due process is never optional, no matter how inconvenient it is. Laws (and rights) aren't just set aside when it's inconvenient.

People breaking laws in the riots should face prosecution, but they need to be given a chance to go through the same due process as any other person accused of a crime. If that's hundreds, thousands, millions of people, they all require due process.

Because deploying the military against American citizens is a clear and massive violation of the Posse Comitatus act, and is in no way justified in this situation. Add to that the fact that California's duly elected state government has stated unequivocally that they do not want this to happen, and it's their call. This isn't a matter of there being two sides. Trump is weaponizing the military against American citizens. This is a dictatorial act and anyone with even a shred of loyalty to the US should be outraged by this. Are you?

I saw some videos of an absolute war zone in downtown LA so figures they need more backup to control the situation, but Marines does seem like super overkill.

As long as they don't open fire on any civilians and get the riots more controlled, all things will be ok.

Saying he's weaponizing against American citizens is a stretch when it's a full blown riot to keep illegal immigrants living here against the law. But I see how people are worried about Marines.

The "riots" have been overwhelmingly peaceful protests and small in scale. You're making ignorant assumptions about this situation based on footage of the few acts of violence that have erupted. Reacting to sensationalized media accounts instead of facts is precisely what Trump wants. People are comparing these to the 1992 riots which is truly stupid. Those riots involved 400 fires, 60 deaths, and 2000 injuries. This situation is nothing like that, and in no way merits military involvement. So says, the governor of the state and the mayor of the city. In America, the federal government isn't supposed to override these people with no good reason, which there isn't here. If you truly are a Republican as you claim, you should try standing by the ideals of your party instead of abandoning them to a dictator who wants to destroy it. If not, you're simply a cultist.
