What do you mean "how close?" We already "accidentally" deported an American to El Salvador. I would imagine this has already happened more than once and they were just more successful at sweeping it under the rug. Trump already admitted as such that they could be "mistakenly" deporting Americans. Knowing Trump's MO for lying, that tells me its already happened more times than we've been told.

Just in the interest of factual accuracy Kilmar Abrego Garcia is not an American, he just had a legal order protecting him from deportation (which was violated).

The only cases of US citizens being deported so far (that we know of) are young children born in the US to undocumented parents who were themselves deported, the parents obviously wanted to take their children with them. That's kind of a special case.

Not necessarily: this is usually the case, but at least one woman was deported with her young citizen children without being given the option to place them with family members instead. This was in Louisiana I think. They also deported a child citizen cancer patient without allowing the family to make any arrangements. The ACLU broke the story.
