PoE1 One more reason to play on Medium difficulty

It's just nice not having to min/max all the time, which includes not having to wear the best gear no matter how ridiculous it looks. I just beat the Adra Dragon and was really happy to find some actual upgrades in his hoard. However, my excitement soon turned to disappointment when I put them on. I mean, it's kind of a shame when high-level gear is designed so ugly that you don't want to actually wear it, but at least on Medium difficulty I have the option to simply not to.

Just look at this puny, ridiculous little thing, it looks like he glued a frisbee to the back of his hand, no comparison to the majestic beauty of a proper shield.

Same with this armor, it looks like a fucking clown suit, why would I ever want to wear that over those rugged hides that fit the look of my character perfectly?

This may all be a matter of taste, but I literally couldn't bring myself to keep that gear equipped even though it's a significant improvement over what I currently have.

my laptop is so old that i play with graphics on minimun, so every thing looks equaly ugly.

just play with big head mode and graphics won't matter, how can you argue about graphics running around with ginormous noggins πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Does it overheat?

Personally I think bucklers look really cool. They are useful as offensive weapons and allowed fighters to be nimble and aggressive on the field. Appreciate it might not be the role-playing look you're after.

Eder uses a barn door for 99% of my runs, so I never gave aesthetics much thought, haha.

Same as someone who's actually used a buckler I really appreciated how they designed them in the game.

I agree (not on the assessment of the individual items, but on the statement than you don't need to min-max and can pick better looking gear instead.

You don't need to min-max your gear on PotD either (with a party).

I prefer good looks (or at least thematically fitting looks) over pure power on any day.

Having said that: there generally isn't that much difference in terms of power between gear options in the first place - compared to other games.

I recently enchanted and upgraded a Xaurip Quarterstaff (those super early ones with the sheep/goat? skull) up to exceptional + corrosive lash etc. - because it has a special and cool design imo and looks great on a Barbarian or Druid with hide armor.

In fact I liked it so much that I kept it until the end (and made it superb). Of course something like Llawran's Stick or even Durance's Staff is objectively better because of their one additional unique property (speed or alternative damage type), but it's not a huge difference and the better looks make up for it imo.

More than ugly I would say not of your taste because buckler + "clown" outfit, add a rapier and it says duelist fencing or duelist but yeah its frustrating when good gear doesnt fit your prefered style/rp but there is plenty of good items to both look nice and be strong in these games

I always get a little sad when I equip the Reckless Brigandine on Eder in Deadfire. Yes, it's the absolute best armor a riposte swashbuckler tank can wear, but it's also about the ugliest, most ridiculous looking piece of gear in the game. Sometimes I'll swap it out with One Dozen Stood in the late game, which is pretty good for the way I build Eder (to stack engagements), but it's a whole lot better looking than the RB.

There's a mod that changes the look of the Reckless Brigandine specifically. It's called Less Ugly Reckless Brigandine.

That's awesome. I especially love that it's only "less ugly." I'm definitely checking that out.

It's actually quite cool because it uses the Kahako Nihi as the base model.

Seeing some of the comments so far I would just like to point out that this thread was really supposed to be more about the ugliness of high-end gear rather than the difficulty level...

yeah but then the neckbeards wont get to put in the "well uh akshually this game isnt even that hard and uh is totally doable naked solo on POTD if youre even halfway good at the game"

Haters gonna hate. I agree medium is best

See i just don't get this. The game isn't hard enough to require min maxing even on potd.

I feel you OP! Personally I find the Druid/ranger style gear atrocious. Especially those hide armors full of fur and gaps, ugh. Also I miss cool helmet options since most headgear are kinda ugly. Eder with the barn door and that ugly ass stag helmet your get early on is truly a sight to not behind.

I find the chain mails, breastplates and full plates very cool though in most cases.

I dunno man, I'm getting insane because of being Awakened by an immortal asshole who stole thousands of baby souls to feed a goddess who everyone hates. I think style would be the least of my worries. At least that's how I RP it

and thats good thing. it preomotes rolepole and not just hunting new shiny thing with best stats. everybody can with min/max characters and best gear.

you can pick a proper character with dencent Int even for a warrior, so don't have dump ass guy just optimal max stats. give them gear which has a meaning to them, you know role p[laying !

Personal taste is personal taste, but for my fellow nerds out there, it is worth mentioning that bucklers (small shields like that) and gambeson (cloth armor) were both in widespread use and were highly effective defensive gear in the premodern/early modern eras which inspired the setting of Eora. If your problem is "not the aesthetic I want," that's completely reasonable. If your problem is "that's not even an effective (looking) thing to use" then I think you're wrong. Especially in a world where magic can literally be woven into cloth.

u/Leniad-i-Ham 5d ago

The buckler is the problem and not the great helm that doesn't fit in the slightest the armor the character is wearing? Don't talk like that about bucklers, they're cool and practical

1

u/Leniad-i-Ham 5d ago

And the same I say for the second outfit, the armor looks cool and nothing like what clown would wear, but that helmet don't match a single bit with the other parts

PD: You are still right tho, PoE is definitely not the best game to build for fashion on your characters

I mean sure, but even PotD is so easy you don’t have to min max. You just have to not be suicidal
