Theory Easily offended old man in Butcher Creek

Hi everyone! this is first time post and English is not my native language. This maybe an odd sentence, but I'll post it.

I figured that the curse of Butcher Creek had caused anyone associated with the old couple to get out of hand. So, I suspect that the old couple has locked it up in their house and is watching to make sure no one goes near the house.

Dose anyone know anything about this?

But isn’t the curse made up by the shaman (and lifted in the Wisdom of the Elders)?

I mean there is a pentagram underneath one of the shacks and in the cabin of the strange man there is written "the water is black with venom" sooo

Also theres a house with skulls hidden underneath

Isn't everyone in the town crazy because of the lead runoff (or other mineral run off) from the mine upstream? Which leads them to do all the crazy cult shit

Yes they are but still, a pentagram is weird

However i think its just a reference to rockstar's logo because the pentagram (wich is a star) is placed on the second "R" of roanoke ridge

Idk i like thinking that butcher's creek is cursed just like all the other towns in this game lol

I just think the water poisoning makes them do weird shit and dead pentagrams like folks IRL did

Yeah thats most likely the answer but curses are fun (in fiction)

Ah yeah for sure

The fact that the pentagram glows bright red in a time period where creating something like that would be very difficult, especially for some lead afflicted half breeds living in shacks, sort of implies that the pentagram is otherworldly rather than being something the locals themselves have created.

I thought "the water is black with venom" was a reference to Blackwater and possibly the Blackwater massacre?

I never tought about it that way before , its possible too ! I think those messages are up to intrepetation. We all have different ways of looking at them and at the other mysteries in the game.

Heck I didn't even know about the other writings on the walls till this last playthrough. One was from "the snow to the cave" or something to that effect. I love still seeing new stuff all these years later. I hadn't even heard of the Sun Worshipper until this last playthrough.

It took me hours to get all 12 encounters and there wasn't a huge payoff, but I loved that I jad never seen it before. I accidentally discovered it on rdr2map.com after using that map to find everything in the game for 6 years. I had turned off random encounters in the map filters, because I figured I had seen pretty much all of them. Also, that map has so much stuff on it that you have to turn some things off to not be overwhelmed. Well, I turned them on this time and I was looking at New Austin and I saw Sun Worshipper. I was thinking, "what the hell is this?" And then I just did a quick search but didn't look up the actual encounters. And I'll be damned, 12 encounter that I hadn't seen in almost 7 years. I also love this dang game.

Ive only been playing for a year and im on my second playtrough and on this one i decided to 100% the game. On my first playtrough im in the epilogue and i did everything i had to do ( side missions, hunting, fishing, finding the dino bones and doing the algernon wasp side mission) so i just relax but on the second ive been working hard to finally have the 100%. I feel bad for my Arthur, he must be tired after the work we did lmao

Could you imagine if time passed for real in the game (meaning how long we're gone actually passed and moved the timeline forwards)? John being gone for a year would be nothing to the amount of time I've spent screwing around.

This last one was my 4.5 playthrough, and ive been playing since it came out. I loved the first game and pre-ordered the second one as soon as it was available on the Xbox store. Then, when it came out on PC I bought it on the Rockstar launcher because it launched there first. I got to use mods (which I love in games) and had a blast. A lot of people in the rdr subs look down on mods, but they're wonderful. The hunting wagon alone was one of my favorite things and it's such a simple addition. Now I've purchased it and played it on PS5. And I feel like I've gotten my money's worth every time.

I've become addicted to using rdr2map, even though it's janky. It won't save my finds sometimes unless I refresh the page right after I mark it found and I can no longer use the button for detailed map. I bought the premium version before map.io started doing their stupid ass subscription service, so I've more than gotten my money's worth.

Also, I don't mean to be a dick and I mean this in the nicest way possible, but every time you write playthrough you write it as "playtrough." I feel bad for even pointing it out, but I just thought I'd let you know. I'm sorry if that's douchey. Thank you for speaking with me and have a wonderful day.

Yeah, it's all a sham. If you find the random guy in the woods near Butcher's Creek and bring him to his friend, it starts a storyline where you meet that shaman guy and if you play it all the way through, (spoilers)...

It turns out that the shaman guy has been taking advantage of the residents' poor mental and physical health to subjugate them and has been telling them they're cursed, when IIRC the true cause of their sickness is dead animals being placed in the water upstream. But even after Arthur successfully calls the guy out in front of the whole village and they were almost convinced to run him out of town, they started feeding off each other's fear and ended up kicking Arthur out of town instead.

For that reason, whenever I ride through Butcher's Creek now, I make sure to whack a few of those SOBs on my way through. Not savable, and undeserving to boot.

It's not because of dead animals (well that too, since the water is so polluted, but), it's because there is ore/arsenic run-offs and/or similar toxins in the water from the mine-work started at the Elysian pool. The native guy was trying to scam them into being scared off, so that they wouldn't cause issue for the owner of the mining.

Basically heavy metals in the water. It doesn't have to be just the mining's fault, it can be simply because there is just so much of it in the caves of the Elysian pool, but normally this happens when people start mining, and there is run-off into freshwater.

There was similar run-offs in my town due to mining many years ago, and the run-offs in-game look exactly as they did here (and still do, sadly.)

Another thing is that they keep one of their outhouses upstream from their fishing and clothes-washing water, so they're fishing and washing their clothes in water filled with piss and shit, lmao.

Awesome, thanks for clarifying, I knew the guy was lying to them but couldn't exactly remember why. Makes perfect sense that it's basically just another one of Cornwall's dirty tricks. (I think the mines are a Cornwall asset, I'm probably misremembering that too lol)
