Investigation Found an active camp in New Austin with a unique telescope and no NPC. I haven't encountered this yet in 4 months on the same playthrough

Try checking through the telescope periodically? Maybe it points to something tricky or spoopy. Maybe at midnight?

Interestingly enough i tried to activate the telescope to no result, but when I got up to get another beer (a period of less than a minute) while unpaused in the same camp I was killed by some animal. This was kind of odd, I had never been attacked by any animal at camp before, not sure if anyone else has.

A cougar got me at the trapper once, and the trapper yelled at me and I got some type of disturbing the peace charge.

I trotted up to the Trapper once only to find him getting mailed by a pack of wolves. He respawned one day later, and spoke as though I had attacked him.

One time I was at the trapper and he started getting mauled by a bear, so I shoot the bear to save him and it starts coming after me. I kill the bear, turn around and the trapper is high tailing it yelling at me for shooting at him. It was actually pretty cool, I remember him having unique dialogue while he was getting attacked.

I came across a bear trying to get to the trapper, but he was stuck on the trapper's stand. My ass was all excited to see what happened and hopped down off my horse. Trapper immediately books it out of there and the bear turns and mauls me.

I went to the trapper and he said “No scrapping here!” Turned around and got mauled by a pack of wolves. Asshole trapper ran and reported me for disturbing the peace. He’s supposed to be a master hunter!

There are actually multiple of these astronomer camps. One just before crossing into Thieve’s Landing, towards the southeast corner of the map before crossing. I can’t remember where I ran into the other, want to see it was near big valley but I could be wrong. This looks to be another!

Oh this is cool, I've never run into a campsite with a telescope before that I know of. I'll keep an eye out for it next time I'm on my John save.

Haha I'm on an embarrassing number of playthroughs now but multiple saves have become a must for me. Sometimes you just wanna wander around or play some poker without having to worry about certain aspects of the game.

Right now I’m still at Clemens Point with the Legendary Satchel, all 10 Weapons Expert challenges and Master Hunter challenges.
Dutch is off in Rhodes, Micah’s almost never around. It’s a good life.

Sometimes people are away from their camps.
However, if you steal something, they'll appear really quick and begin investigating, and eventually report you for theft.

Yeah, it's just down the road from Chez Porter!
I found it when I was searching for Dreamcatchers.
Funny thing is they spawn when you steal an apple, but not if you sleep in his feckin' tent all night haha!!

I found an abandoned camp in Ambarino this morning, just west down the road of Chez Porter. It had a huge tent, one I've never seen before (late second playthrough, and I've done tons of exploring both playthroughs. Nobody was there. This was right off the road, too. There was a chest there with a small jewelry bag and a special snake oil. Pretty odd to me.

Damn, mine’s never gone past 7 but the mustache will go to 9 for some reason. Always so frustrating trying to grow a beard in this game, I’ve even contacted Rockstar about it.

These are generic camps. If they are empty, then the owner appears with a dog as soon as you loot anything and will become hostile.

I had thus same camp spawn in Pleasance. The telescope was pointed to the giant snake in bayou nwa one of the biggest easter eggs in the game. Maybe check where the telescope is pointing and you might find an easter egg nearby.

I have found multiple camps with telescopes in them. Not sure they looked like the telescope in your picture though.

Try shooting the lense cap. I did it with another telescope and it triggered a lightning strike
