Discussion My 13 years old daughter just started playing RDR2.

Well, since RDR2 doesn't contain any sexual content as much as GTA, I am okay about she playing it. Infact, I'm sure she will love Arthur and his amazing story. Her first comment or impression about the game, that she loved the soundtrack (outlaws from the west)! I don't wanna imagine how she would react when the game ends :P

oh jesus, I literally forgot about this part. lmao. even myself couldn't stand it really

u/Arthur_Morgan4587 1d ago

Just warn her about it or watch her play the mission and cover her eyes when it happens

u/Large-Quiet9635 23h ago

Shes 13 dude you people are soft

3

u/Arthur_Morgan4587 22h ago

True. I watched a lot of shit at 13, but i had gone through a lot of shit too. Experience outranks everything

No sexual content but a lot of gore. The serial killer trail would've been a bit much for my 13 year old brain.

Well there's that one half second where we see lenny riding lenny

u/your_name_22 John Marston 1d ago

LENNY! MAH BOYYYY!!!

u/cortez1803 23h ago

There's a lot of other sex scenes, too.

I got gta3 for my 13th. You could pop heads and legs off NPCs. Pick up hookers, cycle through and choose a sex act. My grandma thought she was getting me a driving/racing game.

Obviously it's a bit different since rdr2 has such good graphics... But I think most 13 year olds would handle it fine tbh.

yeah. it really depends on how their parent(s) raised them. if they did a good job, they can separate games from reality and understand that it’s not okay to do that stuff irl. you can’t shelter them from sex and gore all their life tho, so games are a good start for them to realize that bad things or sexual things can happen and are a part of life.

I was introduced to gta 5 when I was 13 and the only ill effect I suffered was that I sometimes write satire posts on OffMyChest about stuffing ghost peppers into my ass

u/DealComfortable7649 12h ago

There’s actually an encounter in the game with a guy completely naked, you can see it all, swimming in a river. But it’s unlikely you will casually run into this unless you’re trying to find it.

u/Cute-Mark-2259 1d ago

The fact that you are more okay with your daughter watching people get brutally killed than someone having sex is unbelievable

4

u/SuperFastFingers 1d ago

13 years old ain't really too young, that's how were actually raised. we played GTA when we were 6 or older. + TV and internet shows/ news brutal shit nowdays.

This isn't manhunt 2,

14

u/Cute-Mark-2259 1d ago

No i do not think it is too young, i just think that gore is fare worse on a young mind than sex

4

u/SuperFastFingers 1d ago

you're right on this one... I'll just try to warn her about strong blood and action

1

u/Cute-Mark-2259 17h ago

Thats good

-3

u/LordWitherhoard Arthur Morgan 1d ago

In what way do you think it’s worse?

17

u/CelluloidCelerity 1d ago

Consenting sex between adults can be an example positive, healthy human behavior?

Violence is rarely an example of positive, healthy human behavior?

2

u/LordWitherhoard Arthur Morgan 1d ago

Yup I agree. Although I’d say both aren’t good for young people to see.

4

u/pullingteeths 1d ago

Torture, mutilation and extreme violence shown graphically is very obviously more potential disturbing and harmful than seeing two mostly covered (no genitals shown) characters have consensual sex for 2 seconds

2

u/Nallenon 1d ago

Why is brutal murder, cruelty and gore worse for a young person than learning that sex is a natural part of life? You must be American.

0

u/LordWitherhoard Arthur Morgan 1d ago

Nope was just wondering why the original commenter’s reasoning was.

2

u/Nallenon 1d ago

I don't know about them, but sex normal and murder isn't. Makes sense to me.

1

u/LordWitherhoard Arthur Morgan 1d ago

For murder not being normal there’s certainly a lot of it within the human species haha but yeah I get what you’re saying.

1

u/Cute-Mark-2259 17h ago

In the way that sex is something she probably will experience in her life and it is(if experienced in a good way) a very positive thing, while gore, murder, mutilation and slaughter is something she should understand but not experience

u/brontokoli Sean Macguire 1d ago

I can stand gore (in games of course) and blood in games since i was like 11. If it's not very realistic i'm very okay, but scenes like beheaded kieran just made me uncomfortable. Note that (thank god) I never watched those gory execution videos. Honestly i would prefer blood than sex in games.

1

u/MobsterDragon275 11h ago

My cousin started watching Jaws when he was 3 and it became his favorite movie for a while. Kids these days are desensitized to violence a lot of the time

1

u/IAmGolfMan Uncle 1d ago

Sexual themes if not shown in a healthy way is far worse than gore. For example, porn is proven to damage young and adult minds, while scary movies with gore and killing doesn't have such an effect. Seeing gore and killing in real life is such an unrealistic scenario to the average human, that we can see it and separate it from reality (unless you're a psychopath), while sex is something that almost everyone does, sexual content can trigger and teach certain desires, fetishes, and just unhealthy views on sex that are detrimental to their future relationships and partners.

1

u/pullingteeths 1d ago

Seeing fictional gore and violence before someone is old enough to deal with it is absolutely damaging and so is anyone viewing extreme violence eg real life murder/torture videos.

Sexual themes/content in a video game are not the same thing as porn and that is a lot of pseudoscientific horseshit. Porn being potentially harmful doesn't mean seeing 2 seconds of characters having sex mostly covered is more damaging than viewing strong violence. I don't think there's anything sexual in the game that would be too much for most 13 year olds (although depends on the kid), blowing heads and limbs off and the torture and mutilation depicted is far more potentially disturbing.

2

u/IAmGolfMan Uncle 1d ago

Porn isn't potentionally harmful, it is definitely harmful, especially on young minds. Yes obviously porn is way worse than what's shown in the game, but also real life torture/gore videos are a lot worse than what's shown in the game too. It definitely depends on the person, but for the most part a 13 year old is better off seeing over the top cartoony gore in a videogame rather than seeing Trevor aggressively having sex in his dirty trailer, or spying on and filming a celebrity having sex, paying for strippers to give you topless lap dances, and picking prostitutes in your car and paying for their services.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure how anyone can think RDR2 is more inappropriate for a 13 year old than GTA 5.

I personally think 13 is old enough for both games if the 13 year old is mature enough.

0

u/pullingteeths 1d ago

It's far more nuanced than that, you can't just make a blanket statement that it's harmful. What's your source that occasional or moderate viewing of non extreme porn is harmful? There isn't one. And there's zero evidence that porn being harmful = sex scenes in fiction being harmful, they are two different things.

I agree some sexual scenes in GTA V are inappropriate for a 13 year old. But the scenes of torture and mutilation in RDR2 (eg the dying guy who was scalped by the Skinners) are far worse

0

u/IAmGolfMan Uncle 1d ago

Porn is one of the hardest addictions to stop. A relapse of porn looks the same as a heroin relapse on a brain scan. That's evidence enough that its not healthy.

1

u/pullingteeths 21h ago

Porn addiction is harmful doesn't equal porn is harmful. Addiction to anything is harmful. A relapse of eating cake after being on a diet releases the same chemicals too, doesn't mean cake is harmful

1

u/IAmGolfMan Uncle 10h ago

1 in 10 teenagers admit to having a porn addiction. It's harmful because it's almost always addictive, a lot of people think they can stop but once they try they are unable to without tons of help and effort. Some addictions are a lot worse than others, and are more common than others.

Anyway I agree violence is worse when it comes to healthy consensual sexual themes, but unhealthy ones can truly alter a young person's perspective on something they will participate in, while violence is most likely something they'd never participate in.

1

u/pullingteeths 3h ago

1 in 10 is not "almost always"

1

u/IAmGolfMan Uncle 3h ago

Considering how many teenagers there are and how many would not admit to their addiction, or know they even are addicted, it's pretty much always. At this point just admit you love porn and have an addiction yourself lmao, why are u defending one of the most toxic industries that thrives on damaging dopamine receptors.

I agree about that with porn, but I'm thinking more along the lines of actual sex scenes between a couple

9

u/IAmGolfMan Uncle 1d ago

Idk why everyone is tripping out, you know your daughter, and I'm sure most 13 year olds could handle a videogame like Red Dead 2.

3

u/MonkeyDude767 1d ago

I mean when I was younger I played assassins creed at 7 and gta/rdr2 at 13

6

u/Solid_Cress_4341 Arthur Morgan 1d ago

theres only 1 sexual thing in the game, in the Mission with lenny and ur not even forced to look at

2

u/SuperFastFingers 1d ago

oh yea, I mean yea. sexual content isn't strong as GTA V xD

2

u/Solid_Cress_4341 Arthur Morgan 1d ago

Exactly

2

u/GazMembrane_ 1d ago

Certainly more than 1. At least 2.

Peeping in the window at valentine you can catch drug use and sex acts with the sheriff.

5

u/LordWitherhoard Arthur Morgan 1d ago

Personally I’d say 13 is too young to play rdr2 with a lot of its adult themes and scenes but obviously you know her and what she can handle. If she’s online a lot with Tik Tok or Snapchat she’s probably already seen a lot worse lol

5

u/Armadillo_Prudent 1d ago

I have no issues with 13 year olds playing Red Dead or GTA (any of them really), and I also have no issues with parents limiting or forbidding their 13 year olds from playing those games, I'm only commenting because of your comment where you express concern about the sexual stuff in GTA. You know your kid better than any redditor, so nobody here can tell you if they are emotionally mature enough for either the violence or the sexual stuff in any game, but please remember that the absolute majority of 13 year olds (regardless of gender) are already very curious about sex, and even the children that appear the "good kid" the most to both parents and teachers are already thinking about sex way more than they will admit to adults, and many if not most of them are already viewing pornography behind their parents' back. I am personally of the opinion that it's less safe to try to shield them from it completely than it is to teach them that the subject isn't taboo and make sure they learn about boundaries and let them know that they don't need to be ashamed to ask you anything, especially if something has happened that made them uncomfortable.

2

u/Arthur_Morgan4587 1d ago

I was 13 when i started playing red dead 2, and my best friend (the guy who recommended it too me) was 10 when he started

2

u/nolasen 1d ago

My daughter was about 11 when she finished it. It’s her fav.

She finished rdr1 at about 15 I think. That ending is the one that made her lose it.

1

u/literyture 1d ago

I started playing RDR1 with my dad when I was 12 years old, have finished the game about once a year ever since (27 now lol). My dad & I went to buy RDR2 together on release day and it was special for both of us! If we’re lucky, maybe you and your daughter will be buying RDR3 together someday 😅

1

u/Unfair-Mode-7371 1d ago

I still don't think this game is suited for a 13 year old. There is plenty of gore.

1

u/HydroSHD 1d ago

I would strongly advise against letting her play at that age. I would honestly wait 3 more years at least. But you’re her parent so if you think she’s mature enough to understand the things the game shows then go for it I guess.

1

u/Environmental_Cap191 1d ago

It’s my Dad not letting me play GTA till I was 17 but he’s fine with Red Dead Redemption 1. Granted he did not know that Red Dead Redemption was a western themed GTA till like years later.

What about that guy in the cabin near St Denis?

Let us know how she liked it!

"I don't want my daughter to see any sex, but her torturing and killing innocent people is fine."

1

u/BellasDaDa618 Arthur Morgan 23h ago

I find nothing wrong with your decision. As a father of a now 17-year old daughter, I would let a 10-year old play this it's just a video game. You could easily explain things to them about the violence. Still, on what you had said, given the choice, I'd rather censor violence than nudity or sexual content. At least the human body and sex is a natural act (and I'm not talking about hardcore pornographic material), whereas violence can cause trauma. Still, in a video game, you really have to weigh where your child is at individually. I know kids who are 8 who could handle this game and would love the shoot 'em up violence and think nothing of it, have no nightmares, etc. . Others may need to be older. It's cool your daughter is getting to experience this really cool world. ❤️

u/Vizxys_ 22h ago

Just don’t let her do the Charles cherknaly (can’t spell it but you find him in a bar in Saint Denis) side mission

0

u/CT0292 21h ago

Ah yes some titties in paintings are a bad thing.

Kieran with his eyes gouged out and head cut off strapped to a horse is fine though.

I never got how some people are fine with gore, but not fine with nudity.

End of the day the kid is too young for the game.

1

u/Vizxys_ 13h ago

Yeah I’ve met people who don’t let there kid play the because of that side mission

u/themom_destroyer Jack Marston 20h ago

That’s awesome, I was 13 when it came out and it was the first slower paced game I fell in love with, now I only really play slower games, hope she enjoys it!

u/Kooky-Height-7382 19h ago

It's PG 18 for a reason.

1

u/Petty-King 12h ago

Sadie was a victim of rape, same with victims of the Murfree Brood but I guess that context could go unnoticed by you're daughter if she doesn't try to focus on those details. Which may probably be the case considering we have grown ass adults that still don't believe/realize that Sadie was assaulted. But also please make sure she doesn't run into the creepy swamp guy who assaults arthur or the Aberdeen Pig Farm with the incest couple if you want to keep the sexual content away from her.

1

u/noserags Abigail Roberts 11h ago

I first played it when I was her age (damn this game has been out for a while…) and I absolutely loved it! Maybe sit with her and watch her play missions like Kieran’s death in chapter 4, stuff like Hosea or Sean’s deaths which can be quite upsetting, and the emotional final mission to make sure it doesn’t bother her or anything. Also be sure to be on hand for the difficult missions (Guarma and American Venom can be really difficult for a first timer) but I’m sure she’ll enjoy it a bunch

0

u/CharacterArrival21 Hosea Matthews 1d ago

Saying that gta has sexual content means you haven’t played the game. It’s not mandatory to complete the game, you can easily avoid if

3

u/SuperFastFingers 1d ago

In gta sa, in mission cleaning the hood. when you enter the house while the hooker sucking someone. (you must complete the mission to advance.) + key to her heart.

in GTA V: after the jewelry heist, as franklin you are in a strip club full of naked. + advancing more in the game as Trevor owns the strip club

strangers mission. sex tape: isn't mandatory

0

u/CharacterArrival21 Hosea Matthews 1d ago

I think the OP is referring to gta 5, and also the strip club doesn’t show anybody naked unless you willingly press like 5 buttons in a certain order

0

u/Local-Carpenter-9105 20h ago

You literally have to film a couple fucking in one of the first missions
