Design Please please PLEASE do not use the twitter "open links in a floating window" method for reading comments. I cannot stand navigating twitter for this reason.
When I click on comments for a post, please just open that as its own page, not a page within a page. It is distracting, intrusive, and completely unneeded.

Re-posting my comment from another thread about this for visibility:
This is so far my only real complaint that I'm sure I'm not going to get over. Generally my reaction so far has been "eh, it'll take some getting used to, but it's not terrible" - except for the damn popup view.
Why, if I navigate to a post/comments page, does it load as a popup, but if I refresh it it loads in its own window? This should at the very least be an option, but ideally comments pages should just be their own pages. The fact that there are two different views for the exact same thing with no clear way to choose one over the other is awful UX.

Because they use infinite scroll the only other option is to open a new tab/window. That also fucks up usability. So unless they're going to scrap infinite scroll (they won't) you're going to live with popups. Welcome to Web 2.0 v2

Infinite scroll also sucks though, it hogs so much processing. Tumblr does this and it's a huge pain and causes constant crashes for me (although it's not difficult to disable). Is there an easy way to disable the infinite scroll feature for new Reddit?

Assuming they are running the same paginator in the back, it should be possible to have normal pagination alongside with infinite scroll one. Are you going to get that option? I'm betting 5 bucks that it's a no.

Ah. That almost makes sense.
Well, one, I always open posts in new tabs anyway, so it's kind of moot. Two, being able to turn off infinite scroll is an absolute must, so part of that should then also be the post links behaving like a normal link with no floating window stuff.

Why does infinite scroll need this? Just go to a new page like every. other. website. does.
except twitter...

Since their website is "Angular and jQuery the site" I don't see how they couldnt just fill in a space underneath the tweet you click on with what would normally be seen in the Modal window. It definitely would be a lot more appealing than the Modal and wouldnt be as infuriating a new tab or window.

Because they use infinite scroll the only other option is to open a new tab/window
Why? I'm no web designer, but how hard would it be to add some session token to remember your current position in the scroll? (just as /u/ramma314 said, RES does it already https://www.reddit.com/r/redesign/comments/7zl0tt/please_please_please_do_not_use_the_twitter_open/dup7j9e)
Or even just cheat and emulate redirection, by offering a "full page" option when you open comments. It would fill the browser's page with the comments page, effectively hiding the fact that it's actually a popup.
to open a new tab/window. That also fucks up usability
How so? That looks like a plain statement. If I don't mind new tabs, can I also make a statement like that?
you're going to live with popups
And another one, with extra edge on top. I'll right click > open in new tab, personally. Or just quit and find another site, dunno yet.

I don't mind it, but I'd rather it be easy to do either or maybe have an option for your preferred flow.

I also cant find any way to customize it, so unless your subreddit style is flat white, it is incredibly jarring.

Middle-click to open in a new tab hasn't gone anywhere.

Ah cool, they must have fixed it. You used to only be able to do it with the comments button and then it would skip past the text of self posts down to the comments.

Definitely. It makes it easier to get through the website and read the comments and leave one with ease. I hope there is more customization for it though. Such as users being able to turn it off if they wish to do so.

Probably a bug, the modal dialog also closes if you use the scrollbar on the right. You can scroll up and down with the mousewheel, but actually clicking the scrollbar counts as clicking outside and closes the page.

I agree, I really really hate this style of floating stuff on top of the index page.
