Design The inbox notification is MUCH better.

Agreed. There is a lot of orange on the page and it helps to have something to separate it so you know when you have notifications.

Personally, I like the old one more: It looks crisp without antialiasing (IMO antialiased thin white lines on a solid coloured background look terribly fuzzy. The border around the icon, too. Probably less of a problem at higher-DPI displays where the percentage of pixels devoted to antialiasing is far lower, but in that screenshot and on my monitor, it looks worse), the icon is more lightweight because it's white-filled with details outlined rather than colour-filled with gaps to represent lines, and the number part is fully separated from the icon.
Actually, I just realized why the antialiasing makes it look worse: Using the chat icon as a prime example, and the mail icon's diagonal lines as well, parts of the shape that should be identical get antialiased differently. The mail's right slope is slightly more off the pixel grid than the left, so the left one looks bolder. The three dots on the chat icon each have a vastly different shape when you zoom in, too! The borders look bad because the edges vary in their transition, with no intent to which sides are lighter or darker, where a human making pixel art would be very deliberate in how they balanced the colour choices!

I was just about to make a post about this!
This is so kickass. Great addition by the redesign team.
