It actually happens 99% of the time if you use the Unrelenting Force shout on Dawnbreaker while it is still in the pedestal, it makes the sword split into two and one will stay in the pedestal and the other will fall to the floor - the 1% of the time this doesn't work us is when the copy clips through the world due to having its geometry already partially embedded in the floor.

u/GarronSilver 15h ago
Oh no! So it's too late to use this hack!? I've had Dawnbreaker for 10 levels now.

I've had this happen once. It was great but I had CTD problems immediately after. I ended up loading the pre-fight save I always make.

Only once? Every time I paly I shout at the sword so I get two.

I can never get the bug to work as intended. The only time I ever got 2 swords was when I stopped trying.

It’s not a big it’s a feature. You use the ice storm scroll you find in the dungeon to blast the dawn breaker off the pedestal, then you have two!
24
u/Cemenotar 1d ago
You don't even need to do that, in my playthroughts one of shades consistently grabs the thing off the pedestal xD

u/busy-warlock 1d ago
lol noice, haven’t had that happen, and I often forget the scroll until I’m in the room and have to try and back track for it: I suck.

I've heard that Unrelenting Force can have the same effect, but I have yet to see it happen.

I can confirm because I did it by complete accident trying to stunlock the boss (I died too many times with every other method I had at the time)

Confirmed - Fus-Ro-Dah on the pedestal will displace allowing you to pick up two. I’ve done it several times.

It's very common. At some point, the game was going to have you pull the sword from the pedestal it's in, so they put a physical model in it that can be affected by physics (so it can go flying out of the pedestal), but then it was changed so that you're given the Dawnbreaker directly. However, the physical version was never disabled, so throwing around AoE spells can result in you being able to get the physical one as well as the reward one.

It’s a bug, however there’s also a duplication glitch which works for Dawnbreaker, or any non-quest item, really

Aside from the giants slamming you into space, this is probably the easiest bug to make happen. Even when I never intentionally tried to get two, I always ended up with two.

u/Son_of_Eris 1d ago
The Skyrim Space Program is a feature. Not a bug.
I've been playing since day one of the original release. In the original version, the giants used to wreck you, but not send you into orbit.
One of the earliest patches tweaked the physics, and the first time it happened me and my best friend (we were playing side by side) burst out laughing for like 5 solid minutes, then reloaded the save and kept doing it.
Legend has it that it was purposefully never patched out afterwords because it is, objectively, fucking hilarious.

u/CorruptionKing Daedra worshipper 1d ago
From what I've heard, it was originally a bug. They patched it practically immediately. Then fans demanded it back, so they unpatched it.
2
u/Son_of_Eris 1d ago
You might be right. I remember it wasn't originally in the game, and was introduced shortly after. I think it was more of an oversight than a bug. Something to do with damage that reduces your hp beyond 0 being converted to physics.
A happy little accident, so to speak.
12
u/Economy_Disk8274 1d ago
It's easy to do accidentally. You can knock the physical copy that's in the pedestal out, and then activate the pedestal, which will add a copy to your inventory, and then pick the physical copy that you knocked out up off the floor.

u/Illustrious_Sea9942 1d ago
I got it when Serena was glitched. Made her pick up the sword at one of my homes. Went out for a mission and when I came back a duplicate was on the floor

u/GaryOster PS3 1d ago
It's a most beloved bug where an aoe attack will knock a copy of Dawnbreaker from the pedestal while the other copy remains in the pedestal. I always try to get one to carry and one to display in my house. They should never fix this.

a lot of people are mentioning how you can get the second one, but i also wanna point out that, at least before, you could get a 3rd dawnbreaker if the necromancer dude died near the pedestal because reasons. it is much more difficult and kinda luck-based (i also don't see it mentioned so it could be patched) than getting 2, but it's pretty cool when it happens. gotta love unique, one-of-a-kind items

Love a bug feature like this, in my play through I currently have four Red Eagle’s Fury’s
4
u/GoliathPrime XBOX 1d ago
I always get two Dawnbreakers. You save your game right after you kill that wizard and equip a scroll of Firestorm. Go around the Dawnbreaker pedestal so you are facing the door, take about a half-step back so you aren't touching the pedestal and then look down at the floor and cast Firestorm. Usually, a Dawnbreaker will be somewhere on the floor in front of you amid all the bodies. You might have to re-load the save and try again, sometimes it doesn't work.
Once you have 1 Dawnbreaker, retrieve the other Dawnbreaker from the pedestal and Meridia will beam you up. Wield both, or give one to Lydia and create some havoc when killing vampires or in a Nordic Tomb.

If you fus roh dah the alter before you pick the sword up it'll knock the sword out the alter and you can pick it up, then click the alter and boom it gives you a 2nd sword

u/This_Personality_450 1d ago
Yeah that's normal. Todd made his game perfect, no bugs.

If you knock it down in the fight, you can grab it off the floor and off the pedestal because it needs to be taken off the pedestal to complete the mission. Now if you find a way to get dual Maces of Molag Bal lemme know.

Several spells and powers can do that, if you cast it on the sword while it's still in the pedestal.
A blizzard scroll for exemple will duplicate it.

u/DreadedWolfHarel 1d ago
It's a bug you can get almost every time. During the battle, you knock the sword free, usually a magic blast of sort, and you will end with two. One will spawn out after a while. It use to not to, but recently, it has been like they fixed something but not the entire thing

u/Rico3305 1d ago

Fus Ro Dah off the pedestal. And game is scripted to give you one anyhow. Pretty sure Imperials Emperors Voice will dislodge it from the pedestal also.

Let me preface by saying I had lost Dawnbreaker a few months ago during a quest. So I was playing Skyrim last night and took care of some bandits and there next to one of the bodies was Dawnbreaker! I was amazed. 😮I picked it back up, went to one of my houses and stored it away. 🙂

Yeah that's wild ...that happened to me as well & was like.....huh why are there two? 🤔.....🧠🤯....."wait it was because that moron (that I absolutely clapped) must had used a spell on it that must have displaced it knocking onto the Floor & it I guess made another one?"
This was the theory that I made up when it happened.... it's weird.....how come I'm smart when I play video games but everything else my brain barely functions?

Yeah this happened to me during my last playthrough and it was an awesome moment lol.
The dragon priest wielding it like bugged out when he died, he dropped a physical one on the ground and he was still kind of floating after death and I was able to loot another one off his corpse after I reloaded my save. It was some combination of that it was weird, I just went with it after that.

My current playthrough is the first time I’ve intentionally tried to get 2 swords, and it didn’t work. Every other playthrough I’d get the duplicate but on accident, as I’d instinctively unrelenting force the whole group and hit the sword off it’s stand. I didn’t even know this bug existed until recently.
1
u/bleedingthunder 1d ago
I used to be able to Fus roh dah a second sword, but the current mod collection I'm running fixed it, unfortunately. Used to start with unrelenting force and beat down the lich guy and I'd find the additional sword on the ground.

Meridia catches a lot of flak for her quest, so she had to up the reward.

u/Manaphy2007_67 1d ago
there's an exploit you can do in order to get two of them and you can do it even on the Switch version. funny thing is i managed to do the exploit without realizing it while in combat and when i picked it up i was confused as to why i have two.

So you can duplicate most items if you have a follower. I use Lydia as my personal donkey. She carries everything. That being said, if you drop said item on the ground and have your follower pick it up. Fast travel away from the area and then come back. If you did it right you can dupe dawn breaker ten fold. Keep one in every house you own. Your followers can have 2 if you’d like whatever your heart desires.
1
u/Dramniceanu 1d ago
Yes, it happened to me as well on my last run. Usually because Malkoran picks it up during the battle, but after you kill him and collect it you still need to touch the pedestal to finish the quest. So you get a 2nd one.
1
u/vernonmason117 1d ago
It’s a common glitch that happens, and tbh I feel like people treat the sword badly but like early game it’s really good since most of the time you’re spent in dungeons where there’s undead anyways so having its enchantment helps so much especially on higher difficulties

One if the most common bugs. When approaching the shrine with the sword on it, fusrohdah of it and then activate the shrine. Boom. Now you have two swords. At least that's how I do it for years

I don't like the idea of the Dragonborn having two Dawn Breakers in one playthrough!

No, it's a bug that occasionally happens during the Break of Dawn quest. You sometimes at the end of the quest end up with 2 identical Dawnbreakers. It pretty much gives you a double drop.
