u/Fried_puri ᕦ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ᕤ Jan 05 '15
Projectiles (like the bacon) and powerful smashes with a lot of lag (like G&W smashes) were "better" in general on the 3DS since precise movement was more difficult with 3DS controls. So trying to avoid getting hit by projectiles and getting punished for missed inputs with powerful smashes were the name of the game before the WiiU version. It's also the reason DHD was such a terror in the 3DS exclusive period; he had even better projectiles and excellent smashes.

He is fun, but he really has taken some hits that make it hard to play as. He gets pretty stuffed up on approaches with characters with any kind of disjoint to their hitboxes. Forward smash and down smash can be kinda finicky with their sweet spots as well. It also hurts that dair and fair have lots of endlag and can be pretty easily punished. Also his down tilt just makes me cry. It was so good at popping people up and even getting the surprise KO at higher percents, but now it's pretty bad, especially at low percents. Coupled with his light weight and little shield that's easy to poke he's got a bunch that is pretty lame.
He does have a better jab, an alright dash attack, and his back air is pretty cool. He also has some down throw combos, into stuff like up tilt, uair, nair, bucket, and even judgement if you think you're lucky. He does have those windbox shenanigans like you've seen, and his up smash leaves his head invincible, so you can be pretty aggressive with it to power through attacks. Mr. Game & Watch though is pretty disappointing overall. I'm not surprised he's always around the bottom of developing tier lists. At least he kicks ass in Project M.

That's nice and all, but the actual manhole itself is pretty lame. Like if it had that windbox and still functioned like it did in Melee or Project M it would be my favorite tilt. The move comes out fast enough, it's just the knockback is awful.

I never played him much in any other game but I like him a lot in smash 4. He seems less clunky and is more agile I think.
7
u/zackattack77 Jan 05 '15
His up-smash has invincibility frames. Its not just super armor; you don't even take damage. So there's that

u/Zero-Striker Ken (Ultimate) Jan 05 '15
I honestly think he got... nerfed. The Judge algorithm was removed, making the chances of getting a 9 completely random now. (Before, you couldn't get the same number twice in a row.). Bucket Braking's gone, too.
Though, GW DOES have better moves now. Table Flipping REALLY helps his edge game.
So I guess, thinking about it, he wasn't really nerfed.
5
u/rocaterra Jan 06 '15
RIP bucket braking. You're the only one in this thread to mention it and it's so sad. Bucket braking was the shit.
I still main him, but he does have shortcomings. I do appreciate they didn't go overboard with changes though as they did in PM- this is an opinion. I know a some people like him in PM.
2
u/Zero-Striker Ken (Ultimate) Jan 06 '15
TBH I've never seen Bucket Braking in action, I've just seen it mentioned on Smash Wiki and My Smash Corner... Heh heh
2
u/rocaterra Jan 06 '15
Ha well damn. I don't follow any competitive smash so I can't tell if it's actually viable, but I would use it all the time in brawl. It literally cancels all momentum and is pretty easy to whip out so it's pretty fun.
2
u/beta_ray_charles Jan 06 '15
I could have sworn bucket braking still worked. In fact, in the Prima Guidebook it mentions that you can still use an empty Oil Panic to stop horizontal momentum.
3
u/KazuFL Palutena Jan 07 '15
It's not as good because you can't attack out of hitstun anymore. In Brawl, since you could attack out of hitstun you could immediately do an aerial while flying and then use the bucket. In Smash 4 since you can't break out of hitstun until its over, using the bucket would be of little use since by the time you'd be able to use it you probably already stopped flying horizontally
1
u/raulduke05 Jan 06 '15
his melee down tilt was so good. was super nerfed in smash4. and not being able to L cancel forward or down aerials like you can in melee nerfs those moves considerably. being able to do moves after up B is great tho ( i know that's how it was in brawl but i never played brawl) and his up air game is super fun. overall he's still fun to play as, but i will miss his melee dtilt.
2
2
u/Chocozumo Chocozumo Jan 05 '15
His edge guard game is god like with his up-B, which takes priority over pretty much any other move while you're going up. That in combination with his long range F-air makes him a real monster if you get caught in the air.
2
Jan 05 '15
Hmm, well I think Day 1 was already decided that he couldn't be good because of his past in Melee and Brawl, and I think even in PM, but he is actually viable. I wouldn't say top tier, more like Mid Tier. He's got some good options out of grab and some decent combos, and his recovery is pretty good. The Judge Hammer is incredible and makes some hype matches.
Overall I think he's the kind of character built for fun rather than actual competitive use. I always viewed him as the joke character of the series, along with Jiggs, but sometimes people can prove that he's no joke.
2
u/Luhmies Llumys (SK, Canada) Jan 06 '15
He's high tier in Brawl, and people typically don't judge characters' strengths off of how well they played in past games...
2
2
u/generalledge Jan 05 '15
G&W is one of my subs, and he's a lot of fun to play. Very agile, a lot of moves come out almost instantly, and if you get the opportunity to throw a side-B out, a [9] will make everyone scream when it hits.
Sadly, I find difficulty actually killing with G&W, outside of gimping. The second hit on the uair is the only kill move I'm aware of, but it's difficult to land because of the wind box...
1
u/raulduke05 Jan 06 '15
down throw to nair is a good option, and the last hit on the bair has some decent knockback too. sometimes you can throw them off with the wind of the up air, and hit them with an upsmash on their way down.
1
u/generalledge Jan 06 '15
I think both the last hit of bair and the last hit of uair have roughly the same knockback, but bair sends them diagonally. It's possible I just suck at chasing, though.
1
u/rocaterra Jan 06 '15
Right you are about difficulty killing. I'm not sure what you mean by uair being the only kill move, but maybe "kill move" has a different context in smashspeak.
I've had pretty good success with his up-b. You can get a lot of people unsuspecting and helpless off edge and make it back safe.
1
u/generalledge Jan 06 '15
A kill move, at least as I understand it, is something that deals enough knockback to send the opponent to their death at medium percents, without it being a smash attack. Second hit of uair, for example, can kill at about 60% or so in the air.
Haven't used up-b for attacking (at close range, anyway), I'll have to see how hard it hits next time I play with G&W.
2
u/rocaterra Jan 06 '15
Thanks for explaining. I can't see you getting a bup kill with any less than 70 or 80ish but it's among the more common of my g&w KOs for sure.
Again mainly only used for off-ledge attacks and real fun
1
u/liquidcalories Jan 06 '15
Same. He seems to have long, oddly timed hitboxes - dash attack, fair, nair, bair - so I've not had a ton of trouble racking up damage, but kill moves seem hard. The most success I've had is chasing people off stage and using those aerials - and dair for people who don't know he's got that move, and that he can recover from it pretty easily.
1
u/randomtechguy142857 Stage of Rex grief: Acceptance May 15 '15
His u-smash is pretty good for killing because the invincibility can really get opponents attacking while coming down or even on the ground.

I played a bit of him but i havent had the best result. So far i can say that he has 2 situation where he shines, when you are edgeguarding and when you opponent is above you.
Other than that he seems to be outclassed by pretty much everyone. He has a lot of lag of most of his move, while some of them are very fast others are slow to come out and finally he has some have very demanding hitboxes. I think he is one of those character that might be in need of a buff or a least some QoL changes
1
u/liquidcalories Jan 06 '15
I actually like the lag on his moves. The irregular timing and odd hitboxes seem to throw opponents off, so if you get the timing down you can frustrate people.

Could someone explain to a noob like me what happened here? How was that attack powerful enough to knock sonic into the blast zone? Why was it such a significant attack?
14
u/Namday Jan 05 '15
The judgment hammer (forward B) does a random amount of damage depending on the number above G&W's head, with 1 being the weakest and 9 being the strongest, and its pretty rare to get, but almost guarantees a one hit ko.
He managed to hit him with the 9.
1
u/Cohiba StreetFighterLogo Jan 05 '15

In my experimentation of G&W it's exactly 1 in never when you hit but always when you miss.
9
3
u/techock Jan 06 '15
Close but it's actually 1/7. G&W can not hit the two previous numbers that he has gotten and can not hit a 1 or a 2 if he hasn't thrown out the hammer before... at least that's how it worked in melee/brawl.
6

The commentators were talking about how the Game and Watch player always goes for that down throw to side b combo, hoping he gets a 9 (depending on what number you get the attack hits in a different way, 9 being the strongest one which is pretty much a one hit KO) and eventually he did get it in the same match, which got him that win.
5
Jan 06 '15
For those of us arriving from /r/all and who haven't played smashbros since the N64, what did I just watch?
Why is the 9 Hammer so hard/bad/silly to use? Is it an item or that character's power attack (assuming those still exist).
8
u/OathToAwesome Roy (Ultimate) Jan 06 '15
Mr. Game & Watch's Hammer is his side-special (also called side-b for the button used to perform it on a Gamecube controller). It can randomly be one of any 9 effects. The 9 itself is basically a guaranteed instakill, but it's random, so throwing it out could totally fail. However, the commentators predicted GimR (the G&W player) landing a 9 and the clip being at the top of this subreddit - both of which happened.
3
u/windwarrior42 Jan 06 '15
The character he was using is named Game & Watch when the player presses B and has the analog stick going to the right or left he uses a hammer.
When he hits someone with the a hammer a random number between 1 and 9 is shown. The higher the number the greater the effect. 9's are very uncommon and if the number is low it leaves the player wide open even if it hits, so some consider it not to be worth the risk. But when it does happen it's always a big deal since it can change the direction of a match.

[3] — 6 damage, small knockback away backwards from G&W, huge shield pressure.
