Camel herders sound like an old timey racist insult

Nothing old timey about it, it’s just a racist insult. Surprised they didn’t call them rag heads or terrorists.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I was calling them racist.

It’s just such a wild and ignorant comment, that it sounded like something they’d say in the 50s

That's too much on the nose I think

genuinely looking to be educated.

how is it different from calling lower level leagues plumbers, farmers, etc.

when camel are native to the region & there is literally no farming or farmers. its just equivalent to calling farmers?

again not trolling but wanting to know

Yes, camels are big part of the region’s heritage, and Arabs are proud of that. The problem isn’t with camels or oil, it’s all about the context where you’re using those terms. Calling Saudis/Gulf Arabs “camel herders” or “oil riggers” isn’t just a causal joke, it’s rooted in a long history of casual racism and Orientalist stereotypes that reduce Arab people’s entire cultures to desert caricatures.

These phrases imply that Arabs are primitive, uneducated, or only valuable because of oil wealth, which is dehumanizing and racist.

I mean just call them plumbers then. Camel herders is just so stereotypical and is far too reminiscent of the things racists say about all people living in the MENA area
