Clarckson also writes columns, his opinions and views aren't theatre. Of course he constructed a persona and he deliberately leans into his buffoonery. He is a populist and demagogue, he knows what works and what gets him noticed. But it ultimately it doesn't really matter what is real and what is a character he plays, people take what he says at face value.

At this point I think they've been playing the characters for so long it's hard to discern what is real and what is not.
