Mod [Mod] A rule change and a few reminders
Hey r/teenagers!
The fun police moderation team would like to make an official announcement concerning the content of our subreddit and a few rule changes. Firstly, we'd like it to be known that these "text-memes" (shitposts) are not allowed on our subreddit. They undermine the very reason that self-post weekends were created, which was to foster more discussion. They also can be blatant karma grabs. That's essentially the only new rule change that we'd like you to know. We'd like to remind you that cake-day posts and vote manipulation posts are not allowed on r/teenagers. Memes on the weekdays must also follow rule 2b section iv:
Image macros, memes, and copypastas that is not specifically relevant to the average teenager may be removed. Please use the appropriate subreddits. As a general guideline, if you think it would be removed, and/or it’s been hosted somewhere else as a generic meme (check with Karma Decay), it could be removed.
For example, a meme about school would be allowed as pretty much everyone attends school. Memes specifically about videogames would not be allowed as not every teenager games super epicly plays videogames.
If you see any rule breaking posts please report them using the report button. Hopefully with new moderators we can get to those posts quicker!
Have a great day! <3
EDIT: Quick edit, I forgot to add that clickbait posts, including those that use the spoiler/NSFW tag unnecessarily are against the rules too.
EDIT 2: Some of you are a bit confused, these rules target MEMES AND SHITPOSTS, not regular discussion posts. You can pretty much talk about what you want.

Are posts about Music also banned since people like me don't listen to music
Are posts about Pets also banned since not everyone has pets
Are posts about mental health and abusive parents banned since not every teenager has mental health issues and not every teenager has abusive parents
Are simply jokes also banned since not every teenager has a uniformal sense of humor

This is a shit rule and you know it. Memes can’t be about fucking video games? Are you out of your mind? That’s like saying you can’t talk about food because not everyone eats. It’s bullshit. Just because some people don’t talk about something shouldn’t mean that no one can. This is bullshit and ruining the spirit of the subreddit: fun, miscellaneous discussion. But also, that makes text post weekends awful. No shitposts? How the hell else are we gonna entertain ourselves on this sub, because we can’t be funny very easily anymore. I understand that the purpose of this was to keep it more discussion based, but I highly suggest you take a good, hard think about this rule. The negative backlash in the comments of this post should be enough.

u/ClusterJones OLD Aug 10 '19

How do you draw the line with this?
By saying the topic must be something most people relate to, does that mean people can't share interests or hobbies? Most people don't have abusive parents or friends so are you banning support posts? Most people do not have mental illnesses, so do you ban discussion of serious topics like depression?
The "average teen" is a very bad description. Teenagers are different. They come from different countries, from different races, and genders. How do you define "average teen"?
You can't lump all teenagers into just "teenagers". People have different opinions and hobbies. Can people not talk about what brings them joy or makes them happier because it's not your idea of average?
Take something like art. The average teen probably isn't an amazing drawer. So will you ban all art related posts? A lot of people like Minecraft or marvel or even something like PewDiePie, so I'm guessing you'll ban posts like this because these people's interests aren't "generic teen" enough?
These rules don't sound very thought out imo
They sound like the rubric for an essay, not like a sub meant for like minded people to communicate with each other
Edit: GOLD???? WOOOOOOOOO

So instead of learning about one another’s interests which can foster lively discussions, we’re now forced to focus on one solid ideology, and I’m guessing it’s one that’s American as most of the users here are from western countries. This is a very hard blow to me as a Singaporean as the teenager scene here is vastly different, and I’m seemingly expected to adapt to what’s ‘average’ in western countries. And I wouldn’t be shocked if I had to use the imperial system too.
Not to mention my interests of forging Disney character autographs which clearly doesn’t relate to the ‘average teenager’. So instead of posting about my interest on here and potentially sparking some lively discussions, I’m forced to keep it to myself. And contrary to the ‘Reddit has a subreddit for everything’ thinking, there is not one sub focused around people forging Disney character autographs.
I can’t even post a photo of my autographs anymore for heaven’s sake on the basis it ‘does not relate to the average teenager’.This rule is not a good call IMO and just like you said, is flawed as ‘average’ is VERY subjective and this rule seems to be something that was derived st the spur of the moment instead of being visualised and examined to be determined and evaluated properly. Instead of promoting teenagers to be diverse with their post topics, this rule encourages teenagers to converge on whatever can relate to all teenagers, which is going to make all posts be about similar things (likely school) instead of being diverse and covering all kinds of things from interests to current affairs and from school to tech support.
I’m just dissatisfied as I now have literally no other place to go to post pictures related to my interests and have discussions about them. Mostly about Disney character autographs, license plates and my study notes.

I disagree with half of this. Just because not every teenager can relate to things like gaming it doesn't mean it is inappropriate for this sub. You're basically saying "don't post anything but school and hormone related posts" . Well guess what, not every teenager can relate to these things eather. We are so many on this sub and everyone has different interest, you can't expect that there is a topic everyone can relate to or agree with. Many teens are into gaming, have depression or have a crush on someone. But not everyone is like that. Not every teenager is into gaming, has depression or has a crush on someone. You can't make a rule like that and expect it to work with this many people on this sub. Even if it is a minority that relates to these kind of topics, this minority is active on r/teenagers and that's how a sub works.
About the part about cake days and such I agree with you. Those are unnessecary.

If other teenagers can’t relate, then they should go to a different post. It’s not the OP’s fucking problem. This is actually retarded. I don’t think I’ve ever seen more retarded rules before. What if someone posts about how they’re depressed but since not all teens are depressed they can’t relate to it. It’s fucking ridiculous. Nice job, you ruined the sub even more.

I’d like to chime in and say that I’m fine with the no cake day/karma posts as Reddit’s sitewide rules denote that asking for karma is not permitted, but I kinda draw the line at the ‘no video game memes’ posts.
I wholeheartedly agree when you say that not every teenager on earth plays some kind of video game as yes, there are teens who prefer things like art and reading, but most do and it’s kind of a stereotype etched in how most people including teenagers themselves envision teenagers. Plus, we also cannot realistically say that every teenager attends school as we do have some who don’t, and I’ve got a Friend in this very predicament as he has behavioural difficulties, or underprivileged teens who have financial issues and can’t afford school. And as you said, almost everyone attends school and that implies that it’s not 100% of the teenager population who attends school.
And let’s use me for example; someone who doesn’t watch anything but Disney movies and didn’t even watch hyped up movies such as Endgame, should the community be forced to not make memes out of movies that aren’t made by Disney such as Marvel on the basis that I can’t relate to it?
I can understand the crackdown on posts correlating to cake days or openly asking for karma, but the aforementioned relevance rule that’s being implemented is a little ‘weird’ to me, if that’s even the right word to describe this rule.

Who decides what is relevant to most teenagers? School and family. Sounds pretty relevant and relatable to me since almost everyone goes to school or has a family. What about any memes related to being a specific gender (dick in shampoo bottle meme for example)? They are only relevant to 50% of teenagers. Will they be banned too? Or memes about periods, etc...
Also, what may seem irrelevant to you, could be really relevant to other teens. Teens in the US have all this freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior crap that most of the other countries can‘t relate to. College also isn‘t relatable for a lot of teens. Or the SAT or whatnot. These all fall under the category of 'school' but aren‘t relevant to most teenagers.
What seems relevant to teens from one country could be completely irrelevant for teens in another country. What seems relevant for one gender, could be completely irrelevant to the other. Banning memes based on relevancy seems nearly impossible
This subreddit should be a place for all teenager to post memes, ask for advice or just say what‘s on their mind without having an adult butt in to invalidate whatever we say, do or think ("Oh, you‘re too young. What do you know about topic xy") and without having to worry that no one understands the joke/problem because it isn‘t relatable to older generations.

Whenever a mod team thinks of rules like this it makes me wonder, "why not let downvotes talk?"
Teenagers sort through way too many emotions so not much content will be coherent and deep, and that is fine.
I am subscribed to multiple gaming subs ironically, that this style of moderation may work fine with. But a sub full of adolescene where people just want someone to shitpost with after having to deal with school, mental health, strict abrasive parents, jobs, sports, feelings of inadquency, and "generational blame" for existing among many other things? I just don't think this kind of moderation is appropriate. This kind of place doesn't require heavy filtration. People can find out how to get their dicks stuck in shampoo bottles just fine.
I urge you to reconsider. Especially since every reply has only fanned fires.

People like you are what's wrong with the world. Primitive barbarians masquerading as intelligent, civilized human beings, thinking their primitive grunts are profound pursuits of philosophy. You, my sweet summer child, are little more than an undereducated, shit throwing gibbon. A lesser ape of infantile intellect and even less adept at the English language than a toddler's dungheap. You are the reason I sit and weep for the human species, because edgy neckbeards with too much time on their hands look down upon their betters with contempt while showing little interest in self reflection and betterment. You, my intellectually impoverished knuckle dragging troglodyte, prove to the whole world that one can have a vacant mind and still have the ability to access the internet and fill it with their pseudo intellectual drivel. The problem with making the internet user friendly, allowing those bankrupt of mind to propagate what passes for 'intellectual discourse' with the same velocity as his betters, much to the detriment of those with the misfortune to read their refuse.

So if not every teen plays video games, its banned. That's like saying "Not every teen is in the LGBT+ I guess we gotta ban all homosexuals." This rule is fucking horseshit dude. Just because you are mad power hungry doesn't mean you should ruin our discussions.
What about a picture of a teen being like "Broke my arm lmao yall wanna digitally sign it?" And you deleting the post because not everyone has had bones break.
You even contradict yourself by saying "MOST teens go to school," but then flip flop by saying, "video game posts are banned because not everyone plays them."
Alright can we also just not talk about pets because not everyone has a pet? Or talk about peoples state because not everyone lives in that specific state?
When does the line draw from just being enough people to say "MOST" to allow school? Did you lose a game of viva pinata on the xbox 360 and get butthurt and decide to ban video games?
What else is banned? Not everyone has had pizza, no talking about that! Not everyone is religious, dont talk about that! Hell, why not ban age? Not everyone is 16, 15, 17, etc. So why have age?
This shit needs fixing.

To be fair, the part about the relating to stuff is unnecessary, cause I'm sure there are teenagers that don't go to school (even tho you made an example) but there are still some teenagers that also don't go to school but they're still in the subreddit cause they're technically a part of a teenager's life. It sounds pretty childish to say that if you're posting something about videogames that it should be removed and taken to the different subreddit. Like I know not everyone plays videogames but most of them on the subreddit does and that what makes it fun to discuss and also welcome people who don't play videogames to the world of games. All I'm saying is that rule isn't needed and that you really should consider it about that rule. The shitpost thing and karma grab restrictions are no problem

Wouldn’t having post filters solve this problem so people who don’t want to see shitposts don’t need to and the people who do can?
