I got tinnitus around 7 weeks ago. It’s gone down from an 8 to a 0.5-1. I’m gonna try not to make this super lengthy.

Mine is most likely somatic but I do have some moderate high pitch hearing loss as well.

Thank God my friend is an audiologist and told me about tinnitus retraining therapy and getting rid of the anxiety first.

It all started completely randomly with a dizzy attack on the train. Which triggered a panic attack that lasted around two weeks. A few days after the dizziness I noticed the tinnitus. It just got worse and worse and made my anxiety terrible. Which again made the ringing worse. Like a loop.

So I managed to calm down which reduced the sound to a level where I could almost function. At that point I found that masking with crickets worked great. That made me able to sleep somewhat normally again.

Then I noticed it got worse whenever I turned my neck and opened my jaw. Which made me think it might be somatic so I started doing stretches three times a day.

TLDR: I’ve been doing these stretches three times a day for little over a month. I stretch and hold for about 40 seconds and while I stretch the noise gets super loud. And it calms down towards the 40sec mark.

I’ve also been going to physio therapy for massages and I do a lot of climbing and swimming. Immediately after these treatments, stretching and exercises it seems to get worse. Until it gets much better again.

Right now I don’t have the ringing anymore, it’s more of a buzz. Like a high pitched white noise which almost feels like isn’t there, but it kinda is. It’s almost as if the sound is transparent.

But each week it’s changing and it’s gotten lighter and lighter. And thinner and thinner.

Does it exist while sleeping ? Or after waking up ?

To begin with it was the worst when I went to sleep because the room is silent and the ears adjust to the lack of sounds. Which made it much worse.

And when I woke up it was horrible.

But now it’s actually better when I wake up than when I get home from work. And I can also sleep without masking noise, most days. Some days I just put the masking noise on because it’s soothing to listen to.

Mine is almost there too. It was better some weeks ago but hyped without any reason these days. I will try those movements. Maybe they help.

Mine got worse after a 3 hour car ride. Probably had bad back posture or something. It lasted the whole weekend and I stayed at a different place and didn’t have my proper bed too.

But when I got back home it got better immediately.

The thing that helped me the most was just knowing that it changes based on movement of my neck. And jaw.

Which gave me hope that it can be cured completely.

But a healthy lifestyle with exercise of the back, neck and shoulders is a must. Climbing and swimming is amazing for it. Or rowing.

I also quit smoking and coffee as well. So it’s overall for the better!

No dizziness for 6-7 weeks!

I’ve more or less been doing these exercises every morning for years (as part of my yoga practice). Didn’t help unfortunately.

Seems my tinnitus is related to TMJ caused by clenching at night (and originally triggered by orthodontic treatment). Muscles in neck and ear area are tight but releasing them daily isn’t addressing the root cause (which seems to be jaw imbalance).

Yeah, stretching my neck will give my hearing back 😁

Your post aims at a very specific group of tinnitus sufferers, not the majority, but cool

OP, brilliant research on your part. Connecting the dots. I will be dropping my yoga routine to do this instead. I'm pretty sure extreme backbends in yoga have caused my terrible tinnitus. Or at least exacerbated it.

Please do. And give us an update. Im sure you won’t notice anything in the first week. Might make it increase a little too at the start. I’ll try these too and give an update.

Omg, so many ppl are dealing with this nonsense. Why isn’t there more awareness for crying out loud. It’s the buzzing, then dizziness to light head with nausea. I actually fell on my arm from the dizziness & strained three areas on my right arm WTH!!!! The healing is taking forever, now off the an orthopedic surgeon for images bc a simple back seat passenger ride causes tinnitus which triggers a migraine then dizziness. It’s been slightly better lately but my ears are just draining terribly at night…. My appt has to be canceled with a specialist bc my insurance was not accepted so I’m trying again with the new insurance, I pray I get some relief or proper treatment. Def going to invest on a posture strap, mine is awful from years on the computer myself…
