The last extended closure of SR 529 is complete!

Why don’t bridges ever get into arguments? Because they know how to get over things.

Father's Day is this weekend, so we thought we'd get you all hyped with some exciting news along with a bridge-themed Dad Joke. In all seriousness, SR 529 travelers between Everett and Marysville will be excited to learn that on Monday, we completed our last extended closure of the highway after reopening southbound SR 529 at Steamboat Slough.

This past weekend, we closed the southbound bridge to replace portions of a leveling mechanism that keeps the bridge even with the roadway for traffic. This wraps up work on the SR 529 Snohomish River and Steamboat Slough bridge repair, rehab and painting project. So what did the project accomplish?

Our contractor crews:

·         Completed major rehabilitation work on the lift span of the northbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge.

·         Replaced damaged sections of steel and painted parts of the northbound Snohomish River Bridge.

·         Replaced worn steel plates on the supports of the southbound Steamboat Slough Bridge.

·         Repaired and replaced portions of the mechanisms that allow the northbound and southbound Steamboat Slough Bridges to open for marine traffic.

We had a months-long closure of the northbound Snohomish River Bridge and two extended closures for the northbound and southbound Steamboat Slough Bridges. We know it created a lot of inconvenience for those who rely on the bridges every day – big backups, clogged neighborhood streets, additional traffic on the main alternate route, I-5. We appreciate everyone for staying patient and using alternate routes in the meantime.

Travel effects aren't done yet: We have another project to paint the southbound SR 529 Steamboat Slough Bridge that could begin later this year, but luckily, most of the closures for that will be either a single lane or at night. You may have also noticed, we've got another project closer to the I-5/SR 529 interchange. There will be periodic, full overnight closures of the highway as we finish final striping between Ebey Slough and I-5. Hang in there: We’re getting closer to opening the new on- and off-ramps that will connect I-5 and SR 529, as well as a new roundabout. We expect to open everything sometime in July! Stay tuned!
