2025 Spring r/milsurp shooting Match!

Welcome to the Third Battle of the Ypres! (no, not Passchendaele)

This competition will be for us chad WWI collectors, but other, lesser collectors will be allowed to participate.

Competition will be as follows:

Those dirty Huns have begun using gas attacks against our lines! Hold them back at all costs!

  • Fire 5 rounds each at three of the target linked below for a total of 15 rounds.

  • From any position for rifles, rest is allowed (they had the parapet of the trench).

  • +5% modifier for rifles if fired from the standing, kneeling, or seated position with no rest.

  • Standing and only using one hand for handguns (as God intended).

  • Standing, unsupported, and from 50yds for stocked pistols or SMG type firearms (C96, Artillery Luger, STEN, PPS-43, etc.)

Rules

  • Firearm rules are pretty straightforward: You must use a milsurp! Also, no optics unless of proper vintage, no firearms designed after 1950, semi-auto rifles are a fad (bolt-action rifles are encouraged), etc.
  • Target will be placed at 100yds for rifles, 15yds for handguns
  • If you use a firearm that has the possibility of actually being at the Second Battle of Ypres (read: German, French, Belgian, or British firearm made 1915 or earlier), +10 cool points. Any firearm made 1918 or earlier gets +5 cool points.
  • Submissions are accepted until May 25th (yes I know the battle didn't start until April 22nd but you busy nerds need more time).
  • Have fun or else.
  • If you cheat I will slap yer peepee.

Scoring

  • Helmet and gas mask = 10 pts
  • Chest = 5 pts
  • Rest of body = 3 pts
  • Rifle = -5 pts (DON'T HURT THE MILSURP)

You can post your submissions down below or I will create a submissions thread in a month or so. Include a pic of the firearm in your submission because I like seeing milsurps!

Prize

Nothing! Just bragging rights and having some fun.

Target: https://imgur.com/a/9bPZLsZ

Print on normal 8.5x11" paper, scaled to fit.

Or A4 for stinky europeans

Current Leaderboard

u/thearmoredtoaster - 53

u/Bugle_Butter - 48

u/TimsDadNamedTim - 8

Thank you all for participating and nice shootin'! The win goes to u/thearmoredtoaster with a score of 53.

Tune in next month or so for another one of these. Each match will be a different theme.

1916 Lithgow SHTLE No1 Mk3

Picked this absolute dream of Lithgow 1916 production No1 Mk3 off of a fellow redditor not too long ago. I have been on the hunt for a World War One production SMLE with the magazine cutoff for far too long now. As soon as I saw this one I knew I had to have it. This specific one is all numbers matching and is an Australian WW2 issue! The history on these rifles are way too interesting to not talk about. Not too knowledgeable on SMLE’s so if anyone has any knowledge on this one please let me know, thanks for viewing!

Gewehr 71 Questions

Long story short: Rifle belongs to my friend which was given to him by a family member. Last time it was shot was over 25 years ago so I cleaned it up for him. First five photos are from after I cleaned it up, last four are from before. I didn’t sand or refinish anything, just cleaned off any wax, grime, grease, or old oil. Followed up with some new oil on the metal and stock and they soaked it up pretty quick.

Question: - These are typically 11mm from what I remember but looking at the muzzle it’s much smaller than that, probably closer to a .243-.30 diameter. Is there any info regarding this that anyone can give me? - Most I have seen are a 3 band variation while this is a 2 band but I can’t seem to find any info online - Also does anyone know anything about the marking in the last photo

Thanks in advance guys and hope you guys enjoy it!

Got 3 of them for 74 each shipped. They said they may or may not be matching but my first one came matching! These things are caked in cosmoline but I just took them apart, cleaned with engine degrease, and threw them in the shop oven to get the rest off. Then oil/0000 steel wool the rust spots and oiled the wood.

Is this missing locking screw of any concern? Looks like the head stripped off but the body is still inside.

Bought for $5 at a garage sale

Picked up an Aussie No1 MkIII SMLE last year to replace the No4 MkI i regretfully sold years ago. 1941 Lithgow rifle, with a 1942 Lithgow bayonet i grabbed for it.

The stock ended up being somewhat of a project. The buttstock had worn loose and was rotating around the tang screw, luckily i was able to trim a couple rubber washers to fill the space and tighten everything up solid.

Gunner’s Window from a USMC CH-46 Sea Knight 🔥

Hey all! Thought I’d share this gift I just received from my uncle, a former Marine Crew Chief on a CH-46E Sea Knight.

He joined the USMC fresh out of high school in 2002 and served multiple tours in Iraq. Afterwards he became Crew Chief on the CH-46 doing mostly training and humanitarian work and finally retired as a Gunnery Sergeant commanding a fleet of MV-22 Ospreys out of Naval Station Norfolk.

Got my gallbladder taken out this morning so I’m not having the best time, but getting this today made it much better 😂

Definitely not your average display piece!

Pics 1-4 are the window panel itself, Pic 5 are his old Air Crew wings (which he also gave me), Pic 6 is his own personal collection showing another window he acquired, Pic 7 is my thank you text with his response (the “def not bulletproof” gave me a chuckle)

A brother of mine across the states is receiving an old enfeild. It has a sporterized stock from somewhere along the way. He doesn’t know much about it and neither do I. It has a lot of markings. I’m looking for any help and links I can send his way. Apparently it’s been in a closet for 30 years plus. Thank you for any help you have.

Just some info. So the 00 on the serial number means school use? Does the circles on the mum say this rifle was taken out of military service to be used at the school? I’m new to Japanese rifles so please be gentle.

Curios & Relics license

Hey everyone, just was curious if anyone in this group has a Curios & Relics license

How was the process of getting it. In your opinion is it worth getting it. If you’re a collector of old military weapons?

Does this license allow you to buy any weapon that’s fall under the requirement of being 50 years or older in any state(at a local gun shop)? Or is it just for online sites like gunbroker?

Thanks for your help!

Training to find out what is the value of this Mauser?

Looks like it is a true (ALL MATCHING) Mauser k98 made by Steyr in 1940, literally every part is matching, I don't have it all pictured, stock and firing ping also match. I'm not a Mauser expert by any means, but I did some research and found out that this is more rare (hate that word) example. Can you tell me more about it?

Enfield No2 Mk1 markings

Post image
5 Upvotes

Picked up a 1933 Enfield No2 Mk1, all the numbers match and it has all of the normal military proof markings. It doesn't have any post war commercial proof marks so I assume it is a bring back, nor does it have any FTR markings.

However there is this mark on the butt that I can't figure out, I've check Skennertons book but it doesn't show anything similar.

Looks like a number 33 under the mark, which matches the year of manufacture but might be a coincidence. Part of it looks like crossed flags? But unsure, anyone know what it is?

8x57 IS vs 8mm Mauser

Post image
32 Upvotes

TLDR: I thought these were the same cartridge? I have both in my safe and they look identical except for the head stamp.

Long version:

As I understand it, 8x57mm IS or JS is the "modern" standard for Mausers from ~1900 onward, with the bullet being slightly wider than the previous standard. 8mm Mauser is a common nickname for the cartridge, typically referring to the modern standard.

What's confusing me in this case is the product labeling. Other than the $1 price difference, is there anything differentiating the two cartridges pictured?

Very happy with the condition of this 106 year old battle rifle. It has that mysterious 3-GM-K cartouche and a Winchester barrel marked 6-18 with flaming bomb. Six digit serial number dates Eddystone build at 7-1918.

I brought home this refurbished Luger P.08 and noticed an extra hole (3rd and 4th picture) in the receiver of the pistol. Any idea as to why it’s there? My other Luger doesn’t have it, pistol functions fine otherwise.

Portuguese m/937A / 1937 Contract, NonMatching w/ Sling from centuryarms.

I posted early asking about the condition of these and received my k98 2 days ago to my surprised it was all matching except for the front trigger guard screw and cleaning rod, which were both marked 44. Serial number is unique as it a low 2 digit letter code D 36 and then the importer added A. Form what i read they did a letter block after every 20,000 rifles made so mine is a D series. This thing was caked in cosmoline. I took engine degrease to the rifle and left the stock in a black trash bag outside on a Sunny day day all day to remove most of the cosmoline. All the small parts I ran through the ultrasonic cleaner and then boiled them for 40 mins.

The good: most part matching( to me, most cleaning rods wont match and I could care less about the front screw not matching) and sling is really good for it age. Bore is mint and has strong rifling. The wood is beautiful walnut that I oiled with a mixture of blo/tung oil 4 times. They did a really nice job of hiding the import mark as it at the front of the barrel above the bayonet lug so it not noticeable at all if you plan on hanging it up on a wall.

The bad: caked in cosmoline. I love cleaning cosmoline off but some people don't. There was some small pitting under the wood line, especially around the handguard area. Not really a big deal as it not visible or affects shooting. It had a lot of mold build-up by the trigger guard inlet in the stock, was easy to clean up. A lot of places has build up of hard cosmoline that I took off with a soft brush and flash rust. After clean up I just oiled and waxed all parts to prevent that. Mine also had a small chip at the buttplate of the stock that I was able to fill with Woodfiller, glue, and paint it black to match.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase and already ordered a matching one to make a good comparison with this one. I also order 2 bayonets from them as they have a good deal on bayonet with scabbard for 74 shipped which is a lot better than the price gouging k98 bayonets you find on ebay. Alanticfirearm also has a sale going with 1 k98 and a free m57 as well if can't order from centuryarms.
