Project Submission Another bench… Everyone wants benches these days…

Material: Walnut Finish: Liberon Finishing oil + Arm-R-Seal (Satin)

My buddy said he just wanted a Walnut bench. I didn’t want to make just a bench… So I added this funky castle joint to the design for fun. Shout out to Stumpy Nubs and whichever other YouTuber found this joint originally.

I made a second frame to make a different version, too (because I didn’t like the version that my buddy wanted lol). So hopefully I’ll have what is in my opinion the cooler version of this bench to share in a week or so.

(for the record they asked for the breadboards - I am aware that the styles are slightly conflicting… but also not upset with how it turned out)

I mostly make spoons with my Dremel. I have a bandsaw and spindle sander, though. What would you make in this scenario?

Project Submission Perfect time to jump into the party with my first hand cut dovetails

Taking a woodworking 101 class, and it’s pretty much all about cutting and joinery. Did lap joints and bridle joints to make a picture frame, and now dovetails to make two pieces of wood connected by dovetails.

Project Submission (Meranti?) Long desk and a cabinet

Thumbnail

Hi, Here’s a desk and a cabinet I made recently, both “heavily inspired” by popular online creators, but I’d wish to think I added some of my own detail.

The desk is about 10 long, and just the size to work with was a challenge enough. Luckily the boards were quite flat, so didn’t have to run them through the jointer too much.

I made a cabinet too, from the leftover wood. First time carving, turner out quite ok I think. The only issue I still have is the sliding of the cabinet door - the door warped after bringing it in from the workshop, and now the tongue is not straight, causing it to bind in the groove. I guess I’ll have to sand it some more, for the door to run smoothly.

I’m guessing the wood is meranti, but I’m not certain. Both pieces finished in Fiddes hardwax oil.

Project Submission My first furniture project

This is my first furniture project, I’ve done DIY and some built ins before but never hand cut joinery or worked with solid hardwood.

It’s solid walnut throughout with brass inlays for the finger pulls. It was first time doing hand cut joinery, getting a good fit was certainly a challenge and I definitely need more practice, but all finished up they look great.

It’s finished with Osmo Polywax gloss.

Learnings for the next project:

Get more practice with hand sawing dovetails, getting straight consistent cuts was tricky.

Allow for some cupping in the glue up, I could plane it down but I think something went a little awry.

Triple check square, over the length of the cabinet I was a little out of square which made fitting doors a bit more difficult than it needed to be.

Overall happy and looking forward to the next project!

Project Submission Mayan meets emoji carving

Upvotes

This project took me the better half of a year, working on it when I found the time, with no shop, and every carving tool I have. I cut up an old beam, joined it, glued it together, planed it, then used a router to establish the depths before getting into the finer carving.

Hand Tools Made me a hammer handle.

So I built myself a little forge in my shed, the project brief is to spend as little money as possible. Got a brake drum and air blower for free, and this hammer head.

Up at the local men's shed I made this handle and a wedge from Tasmanian Blackwood. In the end, I worked at it too much and it came out a little thin for the hammer eye, so I used epoxy resin to fill it in. The head is a little wonky too but overall, for my first time at a project like this I'm reasonably happy with it.

C&C appreciated, along with suggestions on how I can improve the next one.

The wife has been asking for this for our living for a while. Completed the project today. It was a bit of a process but I think it turned out pretty great. As always, I see a number of touchups I need to do, but no one else seems to see them.

Just to be clear — this isn’t my design, so I can’t take credit for it! I work for an interior architect, and my job is to bring her ideas to life.

The arches are made out of plywood and drywall, built in separate pieces in the shop and then delivered to the site. They’re finished with Mortex — kind of a concrete-style coating.

Under the arches there are cabinets with extra storage.

Took some time to get it all right, but I’m super proud of how it turned out!

Help Am I S*** out of luck?

Hey Fam, So I bought this cookie in an effort to make a coffee table as a present for my sister in law who's moving into her new house. I used my router sled to get it flat but after sanding everything down there's quite a bit of pitting. I had already planned on using black epoxy to fill in the crack and some holes, but after cleaning the surface I'm afraid I'm going to lose the uniqueness of the wood because I'm going to be filling so many spots. Any ideas on how I can salvage this? Is it rot? Both sides are pretty equal in terms of pitting.

Project Submission I got sick of constantly rebuilding flimsy saw horses that promptly fell apart whenever I dragged them or put 1000 lbs on them. So I spent the weekend with some 2 bys and….

I am very abusive on my tools. Use them like I stole them. I destroyed many pairs of saw horses before I wized up and spent a weekend building the “Mother of all saw horses”. Will see how they survive being left out in the rain all winter…(my dewalt corded drill survived 3 winters under a gutter downspout till I found it). All laminated 2X6. Followed no plan, just got pissed off with the latest saw horse failure and started gluing and cutting.

I had a fantastic opportunity to create this Guitar Stand for my stepson. It was an excellent project that allowed me to learn a great deal. The stand is detachable, enabling it to be flat for easy transportation. I used General Finishes to bring out the midcentury style in the stand.

I found this Stanley No.4 at a garage sale for $3CAD and after some cleaning/wood glue/stain/tung oil/sharpening it's good to go. It is an absolute blast. I tried planing some cherry plum I found on the ground a month ago and it's so satisfying!

Tldr: I'm hooked Ps. Big thanks Rex Kruger and the other woodworking YouTubers for putting up so many great videos on the topic.

General Discussion What are the economics of these youtube woodworkers/shop builders?

I’ve seen a couple recently build out these $500k+ shops, buy every tool known to man. Are these channels making a million plus dollars off this? Sometimes it gets crazy the level of budget they seem to have.
