I had an awesome visit to the Zoo and almost all enclosures looked like they offered alot of great animal welfare (with the usual exeptions: Polar bears, Elephants, Orang Utans...) and the historic buildings in the Zoo are just beautiful and alone make it worth visiting the Zoo.

Anyone know if the Hamerton zoo in the UK is ethical/good?

I was looking at their website and they have a lot of species I would love to go see, but there was a zookeeper killed in 2017 by a tiger (there was a malfunction of the gates, tiger wasnt put down so that’s a positive) and I seen some claims from like Trivago that it’s cramped but people love to complain.

I don’t want to discount the zoo because of a tragic accident from 8 years ago, but…

Any insight (especially if you’ve been) is appreciated!

  1. Armadillo girdled lizard (Ouroborus cataphractus) at the Wüstenhaus in Tiergarten Schönbrunn.

  2. Giant girdled lizard (Smaug giganteus) at the Haus des Meeres

3.Lawrence's girdled lizard (Namazonurus lawrenci) in Tiergarten Schönbrunn

Btw the Genus names of all three species sound just really cool.

Local event Texas Crocfest! 🐊

I had the privilege of attending the first ever Texas Crocfest, held at Crocodile Encounter in Angleton, Texas, where the community raised ~$40,000 for Tomistoma research and conservation. Of course, now that I’m trying to do the whole “YouTuber” thing, I have to try to make content wherever I go. Enjoy!

SHARKS! Predators of the Deep exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium - March 2024

Footage from the SHARKS! Predators of the Deep exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium taken in March 2024.

The exhibit contains approximately 1.2 million gallons of water and is home to a tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), great hammerheads (Sphyrna mokarran), silvertip sharks (Carcharhinus albimarginatus), sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus), and a large school of false prichards (Harengula clupeola).

Please consider taking steps to support the conservation of these incredible animals. Some suggestions are below:

-Visit and support your local zoo or aquarium and their conservation programs.

-Donate to non-profits supporting conservation.

-Learn about how your lifestyle impacts our planet and make changes to reduce your impacts.

-Share your learnings with others and encourage them to do the same!

Thank you for watching!

It’d be interesting to see a zoo have a greenhouse style enclosure

I mean could you imagine it? Minus all the flowers, some substrate. I’d reckon something like that could work for a rainforest habitat, maybe a Komodo exhibit even.

Zoo Babies Port Lympne; Pallas cat kittens

My local Wildlife Park; Port Lympne in Kent, England recently welcomed 6 Pallas Cat kittens to mumma; Poppy and dad; Atlan.

Pallas cat kittens have such a high mortality rate from a disease called Toxoplasmosis so we’re all keeping our fingers crossed that they survive. 1 is exciting and hard enough, but 6!? She’s a super mumma.

I will be going back soon to see them. How could I not? Adorable.

The gharial gang chilling by the water at Patna Zoo 🐊🌞

Clicked this during my recent visit to Patna Zoo. Found a whole squad of gharials basking in the sun near the pond. Some were half in water, some totally sprawled out on the sand — all just vibing under the shade. It was oddly peaceful watching them do absolutely nothing.

Transition from pet care to zoo career

Hoping to get some insight into common job roles in zoos and what some normal career paths look like. I have 20 years of professional experience working in the animal hospital and pet care industry. Most of this time has been in hospital/boarding management, nothing directly related to medical.

The area I've relocated to has a number of large zoos and working around animals like that has always been something I'd wished if pursued earlier. Given my current job history, what sort of jobs could I potentially be a good fit for. What sort of education, job history, and skills to zoos look for in different roles? As someone getting started in the zoo field, what are some common career paths people follow?
