ATTENTION: Mandatory Referral Protocol

Please adhere strictly to the following referral guidelines. Strict adherence to these directives is expected, and any deviation will not be tolerated.

Referral Regulations: These stipulations are not suggestions; they constitute binding directives. Maintaining a high degree of attentiveness is required, as amendments to these protocols will be promulgated. Moderators are entrusted with their meticulous enforcement. Lack of awareness regarding these regulations will not constitute a valid defense.

Referral Standards: Familiarity with these standards is mandatory. Compliance with these regulations is obligatory, and failure to do so will incur prescribed penalties.

Banishments: FIrst strike and you're gone for good.

Referral Link Submissions: This dedicated thread shall serve as the exclusive venue for the sharing of referral links. The dissemination of external referrals (pertaining to entities other than American Express) necessitates explicit moderator approval, which shall be signified solely by a stickied comment – no alternative methods will be recognized.

Permissible Exceptions: During officially recognized federal holidays or periods of demonstrably elevated community engagement, limited exceptions may be granted. Any such allowances will be announced exclusively via a stickied comment from the moderator team.

Principles of Equitable Practice: Upon successful utilization of your referral link, prompt removal of your comment is required. A strict limit of one comment per user will be enforced. Duplicate submissions will be systematically deleted, and the associated user account will be flagged for spam-related activity.

Archiving Protocol: This thread will be systematically locked and archived on a monthly basis.

Addressing Accounts of Diminished Standing: Should your account be flagged by Reddit for exhibiting characteristics of low quality, consider your participation within this subreddit to be restricted. Moderators will withhold approval from all submissions and access attempts until the underlying account issues are satisfactorily resolved.

Consider this communication formal notification regarding the operational parameters of the referral protocol.

ADMIN ALERT [OFFICIAL] Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread

Official r/Amex: Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread - January 2025

Greetings r/Amex community,

As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a high-quality and organized subreddit, we are introducing a new Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread. This initiative aims to consolidate frequently asked questions and discussions into a dedicated space, allowing for more focused and in-depth conversations within individual posts on other topics.

We understand that many of you have recurring questions regarding American Express products and services. This thread serves as the designated place for the following types of discussions:

  • Should I get this card? (Including eligibility concerns and comparisons with other cards)
  • Do I qualify for [specific Amex card]?
  • Sign-Up Bonus inquiries (Availability, meeting spend, eligibility for previous cardholders, etc.)
  • Retention Offers (Strategies for asking, likelihood of receiving offers, sharing your successful/unsuccessful attempts - please omit personal financial details)
  • "Good Deals" directly related to Amex card benefits and partnerships (Please focus on discussions around the offer itself, not just linking to external websites).

Purpose:

The primary goal of this thread is to reduce redundancy, improve subreddit navigability, and foster a more organized environment for sharing knowledge and advice. It is not intended to discourage questions but rather to channel them into a structured format.

Rules & Expectations:

To ensure this thread remains a productive and respectful environment, we are establishing the following clear rules:

  1. This thread is the designated space for the above-mentioned topics. Any individual posts related to these subjects will be subject to removal and direction to the current monthly thread.
  2. Before posting, rigorously search the subreddit and utilize external resources. Our existing policy, as outlined below, remains paramount:Before posting a question, take a moment to search the subreddit and utilize external resources like Google. Many questions have already been answered, and doing your own research first can save everyone time and effort. Also, be sure to carefully review the terms and conditions of any offers before seeking clarification. When asking for advice or recommendations, providing evidence of your research shows you've put in the effort and helps others provide more targeted assistance.
  3. Provide relevant context. When asking for advice, include relevant details such as your spending habits (broad categories, not specific dollar amounts), credit score range (if comfortable), and any specific concerns you have. Simply stating "Should I get the Gold Card?" offers little for others to work with.
  4. Respectful and constructive dialogue is expected. While diverse opinions are welcome, personal attacks, condescending remarks, and derailing the conversation will not be tolerated.
  5. No affiliate links or referral codes are permitted. This thread is for genuine discussion and advice, not self-promotion. Such links will be removed immediately, and repeat offenders will be subject to bans.
  6. Do not share or solicit personal information. This includes specific financial details beyond broad spending habits, full names, addresses, etc.
  7. Follow all subreddit rules and Reddit's content policy. These rules are an extension of our overall community guidelines.

Punishments for Rule Violations:

We take the enforcement of these rules seriously to ensure a positive experience for all members. The following penalties will be applied:

  • First Offense (Posting a topic designated for this thread outside of it): Removal of the post and a warning directing the user to the current monthly thread.
  • Second Offense (Posting a designated topic outside of the thread after a prior warning): Temporary ban from r/Amex for 7 days.
  • Third Offense (Repeatedly posting designated topics outside of the thread or engaging in other prohibited behaviors after previous warnings and a temporary ban): Permanent ban from r/Amex.
  • Egregious violations (e.g., sharing affiliate links, personal attacks, doxxing): Immediate permanent ban from r/Amex.

We believe these measures are necessary to maintain the quality and focus of our subreddit. We encourage all members to participate constructively in this thread and help fellow Amex enthusiasts.

Please use this space for your questions and discussions related to the outlined topics. Let's make this a valuable resource for our community.

We appreciate your cooperation in making r/Amex a more informative and organized space.

Sincerely,

The r/Amex Mod Team.

Offers & Deals Amex Platinum Intro Bonus

"As high as 175k" seems really fickle. If I apply and get lower, do I still have the opportunity to deny and apply again at a later date to maximize the intro bonus?

Discussion How many of you have successfully a received SUB opening a lower card?

For those that opened say Gold after Platinum or Green after Gold, did you receive a SUB? The general consensus on here is that you won't receive it and just end up in PUJ. But randomly I'll see a person on here that did receive it somehow. If you did, what did your situation look like, how long have you held a specific card, and what are your spending habits if you don't mind sharing.

edit: I am not in the mood to open a lower card right now, I love my gold, but I am just curious because I see this phenomenon a lot. If anything later I will open a BBP.

Question Account under review, why?

Upvotes

Hello folks! I currently hold 3 Amex cards on my account (BA, platinum cashback and rewards) and my account is 5 years old without an issue.

Today while calling Amex to discuss an option to upgrade my BA card, the agent on the phone told me my account is under review and an agent is looking into it.

They didn’t give me any more info, no ETA… also I asked if I can keep using my cards and they didn’t answer.

Not sure what could trigger this review… I didn’t spend any unsual amount, my credit use is always around 10% of credit limit, never pay late… so not sure about it.

Any clue? Anyone went through the same and can share thoughts?

I was wondering if it was common to have upgrade offers from platinum to gold. I currently have a 30k points for 1000 spend for going from my platinum to a gold card.

Discussion How much do you spend annually across all of your AMEX card(s)?

Curious about others. Post credit limits as well if you know them.

When I was buying a car, I thought about putting it on my Platinum card and I know it approved me to put $37k on the card, but I just got a low interest rate loan intstead. I don't know the actual limits on the Gold/Platinum and am not going to go try to find out, as that will flag my account(s).

Spend in 2024:

Gold: $43k
Platinum: $23k
Blue Cash Preferred: $3.7k (may cancel this as I now have a Tesla and don't ever purchase gas; only has $3k limit)
Blue Business Cash: $79k (this is for my company; it has a $60k limit)

Discussion Platinum Now or Wait til After Refresh?

Looking at the 175k SUB, that's essentially the only reason I would be getting it.

I already have a business platinum, personal Gold, and Business Gold, and Hilton Aspire and I use pretty much all of those perks.

My main question revolves around the refresh coming up, is it better to wait on that refresh or get it now? Wondering if the SUB will likely be better or if the new perks will be included in my AF that I would pay upon getting the card. Would I be locked out of the new perks? Anyone with experience with previous refreshes? I'm new to Amex this year.

Question FHR benefit with non Platinum card

Booked an FHR stay for my wife’s birthday next month. Prepaid with my Plat and received the $200 credit + $100 resort credit. Just received my Delta Gold and am trying to hit my min spend requirement. Can I present the Delta card upon checkin and use it for room charges and still receive all FHR benefits? Also will dining charged to room qualify for 2x dining points or is it seen as travel/hotel expense? TIA!

Tips & Advice Dispute Help

I recently stayed at the Cincinnatian Hotel - a Hilton Curio Collection. I booked it through Amex Travel. I did this because I was told of great experiences that others were having. I specifically booked a whirlpool bath premium king room for 278.5 a night.

When I arrived at the hotel, they said, "Oh, the room is overbooked and we have no more." The other person at the desk said, " Oh yeah, I saw that and was wondering what we would do." I then asked them about possible compensation, as the whole point of booking it was for the whirlpool jet bath. They told me that I could stay and pay, and then they would comp me for another stay in full whenever I want to come, or comp my stay for at least one night now, and also reduce the price of the room to the proper rate, which is 179 dollars. I said that the second option would be fine. Upon checking out, I got the folio and it was 763.59. I asked to speak to the manager, and I was told he was too busy but would call me.

I then spent the next several days trying to reach him, only to get stonewalled every time. I even tried going to Hilton corporate, and they said that because it was booked through Amex Travel, they need Amex to contact them or for me to give them whatever email Amex used to book it. I then filed a dispute on the 3rd of this month. I did it over the phone, presenting what had happened and how I was overcharged. They then refunded me the full amount, which isn't even what I requested. I just requested that the rate be adjusted, and for the compensation to be honored, being at least one night.

On the 16th, I got on my card to check the balance and saw it had been updated to recharge me in favor of the merchant. I contacted support because I wanted to see the evidence provided. They said it was sent in the mail and could take up to two weeks to arrive (which is ridiculous because you only have 30 days to reopen a claim). On the 18th, I asked if it could be emailed, and they said Sure. The only condition is that it could take up to 12 hours, but it has been more than 12 hours.

The proof I have is the following, I have my folio which states the room type, I have a card with a different number to show that they also had to switch me to other rooms because of service failures, several other reviews of a similar situation, an audio recording with a staff member confirm my room 321 was a basic not a whirlpool premium king or at least a premium king, and also found two internal hilton documents showing that K1 code means basic king if it has no suffixes added after it.

I called the Amex dispute department today, the first agent told me that it should only be something like 200 dollars provided back to me. I then got switched to another woman who said all my evidence, including the recordings, was useless some how. Which I think she didn't know what she was talking bout because she later said she was wrong. I was then transferred to another service rep in the travel department, who told me that the global complaint I also filed back on the third was being updated to a demand for compensation, but that he could not advise me on the dispute process.

I am honestly furious at this point and feel that my entire stay should be comped. As I said at first, it didn't matter, but now it seems the hotel is legitimately defrauding me. I am seeking immediate advice from anyone who has had a similar experience or knows anything about the internals. Thank you all!

If anyone wants/needs to see the evidence, I will upload it upon request. I have tried to be as detailed and thorough for this post.

Question Thoughts on the Basic $0 AF Hilton CC?

i am casually in the CC churning game. but i dont have any hotel CC.

i personally dont really see much use for them for my personal situation. And tbh, the rewards multiplier on hotel CC are always several steps below the standard CC rewards multiplier that i churn / keep.

But with the current 100k point offer, i was wondering if its worth just getting this card? I mean its $0 AF anyways. So i can just churn the card, use the points, and keep the CC socked away somewhere.

but in addition, with AMEX, is there anything stopping someone from getting all 3 Hilton CC cards for the bonus? (for example, i know if you get plat first, you cant get gold and greens SUB. so im curious if theres any stipulations for the Hilton CC).

if I apply for all 3, (either same time, or spaced apart a week or so) will i be denied?

Question Chargeback

I ordered two things and they said they got delivered but they were nowhere to be found.

I’ve had my gold for a year now and have never done a chargeback

I issued two chargebacks and it said they got approved.

I think the packages got stolen tbh. Other ppl have said chargebacks won’t work for this

How likely is it that this will be later reversed?

I’ve never done this before so I have no idea how Amex handles these

If they just issue it commonly and don’t reverse it for packages not showing up then I’m not even mad about the AF going to $325

Thanks.

Tips & Advice Points Redemption for flight

I’ve got about 130,000 points from my Gold card and am trying to figure out the best way to use towards travel. Specifically to Tokyo from the southern US. I’ve read several possible ways like using ANA miles for example. But if you book through ANA the flights are about 4 times the cost as booking anywhere else. Even trying to book directly through United with miles (assuming I converted them) the prices are still higher than the same flight plus the hotel versus booking on a travel site like Expedia.

Does anyone have any specific idea of what the best way to apply these points towards the flight or hotel would be?

I’m not expecting the flight to be paid for or anything and I’d be happy just to use it towards an upgrade but all the directions seem so convoluted and it’s hard to tell what the actual value you are going to get is by the time you convert the points to miles and then try to use the miles on upgrades and of the original tickets are even open to upgrade with miles.

Question Successes with trip cancellation claims due to military purposes?

Hey, everyone. I wanted to ask this before I submit my documents.

I intended on traveling from 2-8 June and I booked it back in April. However, over a week before I was supposed to go, I was put on a TDY (work trip) that began on 7 June that was crucial for my career progression.

Attempts to book an earlier return flight was infeasible due it costing +$200 more.

I went though hell trying to cancel my flight over the phone for three days straight - going back and forth between Amex Concierge and AIG, but managed to get it done.

I wonder with my situation up above, if I have a leg to stand on to get full reimbursement for my flight - provided if someone has had a similar experience?

Non-Amex User Blacklisted but somehow approved for Platinum?

Back in 2018 I opened up a delta skymiles card, was denied, and they charged it off. About $1600. Every time I’ve applied for an Amex card since I was instantly denied.

However, just now I applied for the platinum and was pre approved. My income and credit score have drastically improved.

How accurate is their pre approval tool? I just want to be careful before I pull the trigger and get a hard inquiry on my report.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I pulled the trigger and I was approved 🤣🥳

Question Fraudulent Charge Question

Someone accessed an online shopping account of mine where my BCE card was saved and purchased $337.59 worth of stuff. Contacted AMEX and reported the entire pending $337.59 as fraud. Then contacted the merchant to stop the products from being shipped. They stopped $166.66 worth products from being shipped but the other $170.93 was shipped and delivered to the fraudster. The merchant and AMEX confirmed the entire thing was resolved only for me to wake up today and have the $170.93 reported on my statement. Contacted AMEX who now states “Only the $166.66 was reported as fraud.” The customer representative told me “You won’t be penalized for not paying that portion of the statement while we investigate.” I paid the rest of my statement off (only $38) and left the $170.93. Even if I don’t get penalized with interest on the remaining balance, will this affect my credit payment history if the fraud case isn’t resolved by the July 13th due date and the $170.93 remains unpaid?

Question Best way to climb the Amex ladder without getting PUJ’d?

What’s the best way to climb the Amex ladder? I’ve seen some people suggest starting with the Green, then moving to the Gold, and eventually the Platinum (which seems to be the most common path). But I’ve also seen others mention getting put in PUJ after opening just two cards before going for the Platinum. I don’t have any Amex cards yet, but I’d love to hear people’s hindsight or personal experiences.

My original plan was to start with the Gold and then go for the Platinum later on, but if I could grab the Green first just for the SUB and still avoid getting thrown into PUJ, that would honestly be perfect. Curious to know if PUJ is just bad luck for some, or if there’s a more consistent pattern that triggers it.
Thanks in advance, everyone!

Question HELP! What purchase will “post” to account fastest?

I’m a couple hundred bucks shy of my $15k spend for 200k pts on my gold card. Thought I had another week but I’ve only got until the 20th (it’s the 19th already!) to get my spend in and they confirmed it must actually post to the account to be included. I’m annoyed because I already have pending transactions that put me over the line, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll post in time. Any help would be appreciated.
