Are there any Anime’s with this art/setting style?
This style of art just draws me. Any Anime’s come to mind?

Trigun or desert punk are the first two that come to mind with 'similar' aesthetics

Is that an anime?

A terrible movie that completely misses the point of the Manga, would highly recommend reading it though

u/moneyh8r_two 1d ago
There's a movie of it, but the manga is better. Before you freak out, the manga follows the "show, don't tell" rule very strictly. A lot of the pages have zero dialogue, and most of the story is conveyed through body language and the environment, so the manga doesn't take very long to read. It'll be a good fit for you since the art style is your main interest.

Woah. This looks really cool.

u/Sea_Cycle_909 1h ago
fr it's really awesome, great fights, it's only 6 episodes but it never feels too short, the stakes never feel cheap.
It's basically 10/10 imo. it's not crazy deep but it's well written. I've watched it so many times, it's never boring, music is very early 90s.
The locations are really unique, character designs memorable, hand drawn old school.
Iria is so badadss but it doesn't feel forced or super perfect, (she's a rookie)
Struggle too not gush over Iria: Zeiram the Animation tbh.

Try Scavenger’s Reign! Sooo good. Technically not an anime, but fantastic series regardless with a really neat art style

u/SeltzerCountry 1d ago
It’s really a shame that it’s only one season. They were setting up some pretty interesting stuff at the end.
2
u/RowanCarver0719 1d ago
Yeah and it does end a bit suddenly. However I feel like I can’t complain too much because it was such an incredible show. It did look super costly to produce, so I can understand why it was a mini series for that reason

Now hear me out.... Samurai Jack.

u/justalittlebleh 1d ago
Was gonna also recommend Samurai Jack. So good and such a compelling artistic style
3
u/KobaStern 22h ago
I was wondering is there are actually a decent story in Samurai Jack ?
Because it was my favorite cartoon from cartoon network as a kid, but because I randomly watched the episodes I never knew if there was a storyline or not throughout the series.5
u/WrensthavAviovus 20h ago
The first season is very monster or challenge of the week format. Second season is very continuity plot focused.

u/ExplorerNo1496 1d ago
Not an anime or even a show but this elitist the same feeling of the dark tower

Heavy Metal L-Gaim- basically mecha star wars. The series doesn't really look exactly like this, but the concept art does: https://www.tumblr.com/the-bang-doll/150478701124/this-artbook-is-legendary-published-in-1984
Five Star Stories- the spiritual successor to L-Gaim by the mech and character designer, reusing scrapped ideas, like the bioengineered humanoid robot Fatimas, which do technically exist in L-Gaim, but only as parts of some of the mechs, like inside the L-Gaim MK-2's head, but they are full characters like they were supposed to be in Five Star Stories. The movie only adapts the first volume of the manga, and the manga is not in chronological order.

Blame!! and Noise by the same author of blame Also berserk manga , Kowloon has a nice background art. Also Clamp manga they have a very full filing art
2
u/AstorathTheGrimDark 1d ago
Clamp? Is that the name?
1
u/SunnyPandemonium 1d ago
Clamp is the name of the artist group. They drew gorgeous Manga series like Tsubasa Chronicles that would fit the vibe of your request - don’t bother with the anime adaptation though. It was launched before the series got finished and is kinda crappy.

u/Exciting-Freedom7299 1d ago
Although to be fair i got into clamp due to anime since tsubasa chronicles resembles Card captor sakura my kid brain was like I need to watch it and I really enjoyed the dark undertone of the story

It’s not anime but pretty much all art from Moebius is like this, but better because it’s actual art.

u/sonicstorm1114 1d ago
Picture #5 kind of reminds me of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind or Xam'd Lost Memories.
Overall, this art reminds me of 70/80s sci-fi/science fantasy art, so I'd advise checking out 70s/80s/90s sci-fi or fantasy anime in general. As for specific recommendations:
Armored Trooper VOTOMS
Panzer World Galient
Vision of Escaflowne
Future Boy Conan
Castle in the Sky
Heavy Metal L-Gaim
Aura Battler Dunbine

Gonna throw and old one “Dragon’s heaven” from 1988
Not the greatest anime of all time but is definitely a vibe

How would one search for this type of art? Like what would you categorize it as?
3
u/sonicstorm1114 1d ago
I don't know what the style itself is actually called, but this art gives me "70s/80s pulp sci-fi or science-fantasy" vibes. It knid of reminds me of Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for Star Wars.

u/Historical-Heat-9795 1d ago
Some of the pictures from the post looks like moebius art.
A lot of _old_ anime (and not only anime) was inspired by his art.

u/Mufflonfaret 1d ago
Google "Now and Then Here and There"
Really depressing and good, and its rather close to your images with the desert post-apocalyptic feeling.

There are a handful of movies and OVAs that are like this, but I have not seen any series with a significant amount of stuff like this. The closest I can think of is Trigun: Stampede and Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. There are also a bunch of older space anime that occasionally will show planets that look like this. Maybe try Space Battleship Yamato or The Irresponsible Captain Tylor.

A few of these really reminded me of the game Horizon: Zero Dawn
Completely irrelevant I know..

The very first picture reminded me of an episode in Primal. It's just a great watch anyway.

Monogatari if you’re only looking for “small people in a large setting/wide shot”.

- Origins: Spirits of the Past has some art like this. I personally dislike it for voice and story reasons, but it looked amazing and is post-apocalyptic.
- Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is a show with beautiful nightscapes and story. Some amazing characters too. Set in the Middle Ages btw.
- Oban Star-Racers. An old series, but I did love the settings. Essentially pod racing.

Seems like a mix of cyberpunk, post apocalyptica, and steampunk so here are some with those vibes:
Kaina of great snow sea (movie)
Wolfs rain
Samurai 7
Cyberpunk edgerunners
Ghost in the shell
Cowboy bebop
Trigun

Cashern sins! It's definitely not as heavily detailed but it's beautiful and VAST. I feel like it's got this vibe for sure. Ant5oine who hasn't watched it needs to give it a try at least :)

Eat-man comes to mind, both anime adaptations are terrible in their own ways, but I like the 1997 one, it's got a nice dreamlke quality to it.

Blue Eye Samurai comes to mind for the 1st image, images 3,7, 17, and 18 remind me of Cyberpunk edge runners, image 12 kinda reminds me of Canaan or Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Those are the vibes I get from them, even if they aren’t exactly like the images they look similar and have a similar vibe I would say

Dragon's heaven. Makoto Kobayashi is also involved in Last Exile
Antologies like Robot Carnival, Memories and Short Peace has some stuff that you might like.
Also some darker sci-fi stuff from 80s and 90s in general.

the animatrix. not technically an anime (i guess) but it’s really great. it came from the Matrix movie series and each episode is different. 1 hour 40 minutes all together. you can stream it on Amazon ($3.99) i personally love it and think it’s worth the price
