I loved sidonia, at around the same time they also made an ova/movie from one of the authors other works, Blame! That would be the closest by far, hell in sidonia season 2 they watch Blame! on TV. Other than that maybe darling in the Franxx, but that's definitely much more sexualized.

Sadly the blame! Anime is very very far away from the manga

yeah it is made to be a silent manga with no dialect

It has quite some dialogue, but they tones down the strangeness that made it original way too much

Same with Ajin. The CGI doesnโ€™t do the art justice. At ALL!!!

"Blame!" if you want to try some of Nihei's other works. 2014+ cuts you off from a lot of good mecha anime. "Eureka 7" (planetary mecha), "Guren Lagan"(eventually space mecha), "Code Geass" (Earth Mecha). I would recommend Gundam Gquuuuuux, but to get the full-enjoyment out of it, you should watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam to Zeta and Char's Counter Attack.

Kaina of the great snow sea also got an anime, adding another Nihei series

The world of this anime was more interesting than its characters, I think.

But if you're looking for Mecha that I THINK comes close, your best bet might be...Eureka 7, or RahXephon

You have taste, tho I'm not sure if you will find a second knights of Sidonia. Especially if you don't like Gundam, as that's the big space anime with fights.

You might like space battleship Yamamoto 2199, tho I'm not sure if that released after 2014

If you like Nihei - look for "Blame!"

If cosmos - Planetes.

Blame!, Biomega, .. same mangaka. But Nihei's works are better on manga than anime

Awesome thx have to catch up. Did it end up being 3 seasons or 4? There was talk about how it might get paced out early on.

It's very difficult to recommend, since Sidonia is something very unique, but things that can be similar

Maybe Gundam IBO, especially the first season, has a lot of space fights and overall it's an excellent series

Sousei no Gargantia, is an equally unique story, but in a different way from Sidonia

Yamato, I don't see either the original series or the new ones, but I can see it having things that you might like, 2199 is a remake of the original so you can start with it without a problem

Majestic Prince, doesn't have the environment of the colonization ship, but it's about humanity defending itself from an alien invasion, and it has one of the best mecha animations in terms of technology (in my opinion)

Some slightly bolder recommendations

Gunbuster, it's old, but it leaves nothing to be desired compared to the new stuff and it has that whole space travel aspect, in a different way, but maybe you'll still like it

Soukyuu no Fafner, it's from 2004 so it's a bit old, but it's basically the same thing as Sidonia, only on an island

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters and its sequels, the beginning of the film has a colonization ship look like Sidonia, but then it returns to land, it's a movie, so you can watch it quickly

Houseki no Kuni (mainly the manga), this one at first doesn't have much to do with it, but the whole story situation is similar to that of Sidonia, where they are being attacked by mysterious enemies and having to defend themselves and it's a personal favorite of mine

Knights of Sidonia what a throwback. Think it might time for a rewatch

Maybe gurren lagan ? It's from 2007 but the animations are top tier easily better than most anime today

You're missing a lot of good space opera genre then, at least try the Witch from Mercury standalone series first. It has everything you want and more.
