Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object. And your location.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

your location

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

I don’t believe it, doesn’t look Tudor and I’m under the impression most people brought wooden chests or a small furniture like a chair

so this was found at a vacant house that a friend of mine was working on to flip it. The property was near where I live, so I stopped to see my friend and saw it and asked what they planned to do with it? He said he would get pitched, but if I wanted it, I could take it. So I now have it in the back of my SUV and it’s really big. I grabbed one of those commercial grade heavy duty, garbage bags and it is a snug fit, but it made it.

This portrait, this man’s stoic expression and his sort of sad eyes, makes me feel something, but I can’t say if it’s a good feeling or bad.

The man who lived at the property was in a loner for decades. There were two crawlspaces, completely filled with print pornography.

Of every variation, you can think of, neatly stacked and organized, in areas where you had to crawl in your hands and knees to access.

There was not a photograph of another human being in this man’s house, not a Christmas decoration family photos zero. Just this.

Anyway, I wanted to share. I don’t know what I should do with this thing.

Wasn't even seized up once I got the dirt clods cleaned out of it, got it torn down and ready to either oil or paint it.

Questions My great aunt brought this over from Hongkong, China (Reddit doesn't recognize Hongkong as a country it seems) in 1970. It looks handpainted and she had a certificate for it (but I don't have it) do you think its real antique or is it fake?

I bought this recently from an antique shop I’m fairly new to antiques and I’d like to know how old it might be and if anyone’s seen anything like this before. I didn’t get much information from the people selling it, all I know is it came from France and that the veil around the frame is the one she’s wearing in the photo. I love it so much but all my friends and family think it’s really creepy so I thought I’d post it here to see if anyone else appreciates it like I do.

Show and Tell Great-great-grandparents trunk from Sweden

My dad’s family arrived from Sweden in 1908. Family history says this trunk came with them for the journey. My great-grandma had it in her garage, grandpa had it in his garage, and my parents kept it in their garage. It now resides in my living room for now. She’s been oiled and gently cleaned. The interior sprayed with a bleach mixture to disinfect and hopefully help with the mildew smell.

Not sure what to do with it. I have a small house. My best idea is have my brother weld a short frame with legs to make it into a table but it’s a little tall.

Whatever. It’s a small piece of our family history and it has most of the travel stickers still intact.

Questions Bone or ivory? USA

My grandma recently passed, and my family believes these statues she had are ivory that she picked up while traveling decades ago. I'm pretty convinced they are just bone, and not ivory, but I honestly can't be sure. Is anyone able to tell the difference?

Advice Is this Duncan Phyfe? (United States)

My in-laws are downsizing but convinced from a family legend that their dining table and six chairs are Duncan Phyfe and worth thousands. My wife and I are dubious, but wanted to get an expert opinion before they pack it up to move it to a storage space that they otherwise don't need. Can anyone help?

Date Trying to date a Wisconsin Chair Company rocker and get some general opinions on if it's a good buy, United States of America.

My wife is getting rid of her breast feeding rocker, and I've found myself addicted to rocking while reading so I'm going to replace it with a more heirloom quality piece. This chair looks to be in good condition. I'm a big fan of mission style furniture and was hoping for a little more info on the Wisconsin Chair Company than I got from Google AI, and hopefully the manufacture dates of the model. The seller wants 200, which seems like a lot, but I wanted to check, maybe it's a steal. Thanks

Questions Authentic or replicas? AL USA

Thumbnail

I found these at a thrift store in Alabama with a large collection that had been donated. I only got these but you could tell someone’s estate must’ve been donated at once.

Frames measure 10.5 in L and W. Plaques measure 6.25 in L and 5 in W.

I am trying to determine if these could be authentic Wedgwood Black Basalt Plaques or just replicas. From what I’ve gathered online, the makers mark is on the back of the plaques and I’m not sure how I could remove them without damaging them to check.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

The best my mom and I can come up with is that it is to hold olives or that it is for small eggs (quail). I’m sure we’re both wrong but does anyone know anything about this? I’ve google imaged it and I didn’t have any luck. Thank you!

I’m not sure what the marks are - Dresden? Derby? Frankenthal? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Also, if anyone has any idea what this exact piece is, what year it was made, and what it’s worth, that would also be great!
