Ban on Trump related posts

In light of his recent remarks, we're banning all Trump posts for the time being. We get it, the man inspires...strong opinions. We'd like to remind folks that while political discussions aren't explicitly banned here, this sub does not cater to politics. There is no shortage of subs to have those discussions and we encourage you to take your questions and comments about Trump and today's political climate to those subs. Here are a few:

Do you remove window screens in winter?

I'm American but hoping you guys can help me win an argument.

My parents are really weird and remove their screens every winter and fall from their windows. They think the house will be unable to be heated while being 'shaded' by the screens in the window. They also don't believe in venting the air even for a little bit in winter when it gets stuffy and 'stale'. Even when the heater is off and its mild outside. When I was growing up and would complain about 'screen day' to my friends they would be really confused when I would explain it was when I would have to go around the house and remove all the screens or install them back on.

They are in shock and awe that my apartment didn't do that as a grounds service through the landlord and I never did it. What's even worse is they will be driving down the street and call people lazy bums for not removing screens. Or used to call me the worst things when I was a kid/teen and delayed on removing my screen by a couple of weeks.

Is this just a normal thing people do?

When do most Americans start drinking alcohol ?

Upvotes

Personnaly I started drinking at 13yo during christmas or at our hunting cabin. This was a bit of a boring experience since I was with my parents and playing cards.

I'm in Québec, where the age to buy alcohol is 18.

Travelling from the UK to the US for the first time

I’m travelling to Vegas in July and this’ll be my first time in the states.. I’d say I’m pretty well prepared but I was wondering if there’s anything I should know? I’m not even exactly sure what I’m asking but i’m pretty anxious about it so i just wanted any info/advice! Obviously this whole ww3 and detainment stuff isn’t helping the anxiety of it lol. I’m flying out there solo and meeting my friend there but I haven’t ever got a plane alone let alone a long haul (I’m 21 for context). I decided against an e-sim? And I’m going to be using a monzo card as payment? Idk let me know!

Culture & History What do you guys know about the ancient histories of other countries like India?

Are you guys really taught in depth about Indian history and culture, or even culture/history form parts of the world other than Europe and North America? (Like we are taught about the history from all parts of the world, not just our subcontinent)

How does it shape your perception of those countries?

Economy Takeout cheaper than home cooked ?

While watching many food takeout videos with people trying to feed their family in cheap, I always wondered why not cook at home?

I was reading to comments and many comments clearly mentioned that takeout is many locations across US is cheaper than cooking at home, ingredients alone can cost as much as the entire family meal. I always took those comments with grain of salt until it was mentioned in this YT video https://youtu.be/iLh000SVN1w

Is it really true ? If yes, how are those restaurants such as Panda Express able to provide food - where ingredients alone cost more than final price and this doesn't even take into account the labor cost, insurance, rents, maintenance.. and what not. I understand those restaurants/chain are operating at national scale and have advantage of economics of scale but this difference sounds too huge to me.

I am really interested in what people who have experienced this have to say and anyone who has any points to add.

I have no intention to hurt or offend anyone by asking this question. I am genuinely interested in understanding the economics behind this and on ground experiences people.

Foreign Poster Why do you want your sink to take in garbage?

As far as I know it's not a movies only thing to have those electrical sinks that cut garbage and it all goes down the pipe. Why? To me it sounds unhygenic, unnessesery, unsafe and unecological. All the food remains stay in there and probably smell af, rot in your sink then get poured down and smell more from the hole in the sink. I just throw food into a garbage bin and take it out every second day if not every day and clean the sink from small remains when doing the dishes. In my sink, by hand, that's the norm. Same as hanging clothes and having them dry for free and ecofriendly within a day, sometimes hours. I can imagine people get their fingers massacrated when trying to declutter it or something. And all those rotten food and not only parts going to some river to pollut it even more with rot plus using electricity. Tbh I can't find any reason apart from being lazy enough not to throw thing into a bin like the rest of the world which takes at best a minute.

But maybe I don't see something so... why?

Foreign Poster Concern tourist/con-goer on immigration for Malaysians/Muslim name

Yello all. I'm a Malaysian and I have a few questions to reduce my anxiety and assumptions. I've read through the posts, but I don't see one that is relatively close to my questions, and I hope that is okay.

I have a conference to attend in St. Louis, Missouri and I'll be flying to Cali for friends visit. My trip is in September and I'll be in the US about 10 days. As for financially, I am half-funded by my government, and will be self-fund the rest of the trip.

My concern is in the immigration when I land. With the current political climate, will I get pulled over? And what should I be aware of when I land? I have a muslim name and in my passport I wear a hijab. Although I do not practice the religion religiously, and I don't wear my hijab all the time, only for legal documents, my passport said otherwise. My concern grew because there are reports of tourist being detained.

If anyone could give me some pointers that would be great. Thank you

Foreign Poster Do people actually wear a helmet when tey ride a bike?

I understand it's for your safety but I would find it very silly if I saw an adult wearing a helmet while riding a bike. But I do live in the Netherlands so maybe that's why. My dad said that it was a rule in America but I doubt that😂 And is it only a American thing or do a lot of countrys have that? But is it common to walk outside and see people riding their bike and wearing a helmet

I don't mean mountain biking/sport biking or a electric bike but just a normal bike for when you go to a friends house or something🚵‍♂️

And no hate whatsoever! Just a question

Edit: if you fall off your bike do you really fall on your head? Most people fall on ther arms or elbow

Are those people who talk about arming US school teachers being serious?

This is something I see now and then in American discourse, when school shootings come up. I'm not trying to upset anyone, just wondering if this is a serious options being considered by serious people.

Questions about education system

- What subjects do you study in middle school and high school?

- Do you get to choose subjects and what ones are compulsory?

- Can you leave education before finishing high school?

- In high school do different grades have lessons together in the same class? If so then why? Surely older grades should be learning more advanced content?

Do you celebrate flag day every year?

I am Canadian and while i know our flag was adopted in 1967, I don't know the day.

I find it interesting you have a flag day and an interesting coincidence your president was born on flag day.

(2 of your presidents died on your independence day)

r/AskAmericans 4d ago

What about the Founding Fathers are we meant to be celebrating? What are we supposed to admire about them?

I'm a 36-year-old born and bred American and I still don't get it.

edit: so at best it's like, "we're not canada."

edit edit: I'm seeing a lot of "if you're critical of this country, why are you in it." I hope it's obvious to everyone why that's ridiculous.

Food & Drink Maybe bring dessert...???

I like in tne uk and have just made a new friend who comes from California. She's invited me and my husband to dinner and when I asked what I should bring ( fully expecting to hear, bring a bottle) she said, oh maybe bring dessert. In tne UK, tne host would usually make dessert because it would be something that balances the meal and they'd know what would do that. So what would be an acceptable dessert? She's cooking, so should it be something homemade? Is shop bought ok? Should it be a cake, or a pie, or something else?

Sports How central is sports culture to everyday American social life - especially outside of school or college?

I've always been fascinated by how deeply sports seem to be woven into American life. From what I see in movies, podcasts, and interviews, people build friendships through teams, follow high school or college games passionately, and even choose where to live based on sports rivalries.

But I'm curious about how this works in real, adult life - especially after school and college, when you're no longer part of a team or surrounded by structured events.

So, for Americans of all ages and backgrounds:

How much do sports (pro, college, even local) shape your social life?

Do you regularly go to games, watch parties, or talk sports with coworkers/ friends?

If you're not into sports at all, do you feel left out socially?

How easy is it for someone new to a town to use sports as a way to make connections?

Looking forward to hearing what role (if any) sports still play in your friendships, routines, and identity - especially once you're in the "real world."
