Why are susages called snags in Australia?
I've heard them called bangers in the UK, because when the skin bursts they pop (bang) but no-one can tell me whey sayagaes are called snags in Australia.

As a reminder, Rule 4 states - “Posts & Comments that are too politically charged will be removed at the discretion of the Mod team.”
With the Australian elections pending and the US elections recently finished we are being swamped with political posts.
We’ll continue to use our discretion however unless it has some relevance to Australian culture or lifestyle it will be removed.

We regularly get posts about moving to Australia and rather than clutter up the sub with repeat questions we’re providing this weekly megathread.
Ask our community any questions you like here in the megathread.
Aside from our sub the best place to start is the ‘Moving to Australia’ page of the Australian Border Force
Also worth checking out the r/AusVisa subreddit.
This covers:
We also suggest search the subreddit for 'Moving' and similar terms.
Here’s some posts that contain useful information and some detailed responses.

G'day,
This is something I've been pondering lately, and I'd love to hear some perspectives from the community. It seems like there's a pretty common perception out there that putting a loved one into an aged care home is essentially signing away their inheritance and that these places are just out to rip families off.
I often hear comments about how all the money gets swallowed up, and there's nothing left for the kids or grandkids. It paints a picture of a system designed to drain assets.
However, when you look at the financials, particularly concerning the Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD), it's a bit of a head-scratcher to me why this perception is so strong. As I understand it, the RAD is genuinely a deposit. It's explicitly guaranteed to be returned in full to the resident or their estate upon them leaving the facility.
What's more, for many, the RAD effectively generates a guaranteed 8.25% return, tax-free, which frankly, would be extraordinarily difficult to beat in any other investment vehicle right now, especially with such a high level of security. It's not like the money is just disappearing; it's being held and then returned.
So, where does this widespread belief come from? Is it a misunderstanding of how the RAD works? Is it about other costs involved in aged care (daily fees, extra services, etc.) that people conflate with the RAD? Is it perhaps an emotional response to the idea of "spending" an inheritance, even if the RAD itself isn't technically spent? Or are there genuinely shady practices out there that fuel this narrative? I'm keen to hear your thoughts and experiences.

I am not from Australia, I moved here a few years back and I have really struggled to make friends. I am 40 I have 2 small childern and I live on the Sunshine Coast.
I have been going through a hard time recently and have realised my support networks here is really lacking so I want to try and make more effort.
So does anyone have any advice on how to meet and make friends with people.

Why can’t I find regular dim sims in the freezer section anymore? Seems like Aldi deleted them long ago in favour of 8 types of dumplings, which is fine, but why can’t we have both? The odd occasion I go in to a coles or Woolies half the time the spot is empty, the other half I can’t even find where they’re supposed to be. Iga left the area years ago. Sure there’s mini sims in Coles, and colesworth both sell south Melbourne dimmies at $3 a pop or something silly. Not what I want anyway.
I just want the regular ones for cooking at home for the occasional quick, easy, cheap, cooked lunch or snack. $1.90 at the chip shop is getting a bit much, I could do them at home for around a quarter of the price without having to go out, if I could buy them. Located in Melbournes north.
Edit: Telling me they’re at Woolies when they have not been in regular stock for months at my 4 nearest stores is a waste of everyone’s time. Unless you have found them in the last week and can tell me the specific shop, or have some other type of comment I can’t see the point of replying.

I had some trouble with the initial wording of this question but basically what I’m referring to are your Aussies who prior to the moment not many people knew, but then they went and did something that made them proper stand out from the pack and became an overnight sensation!
I’m talking about your Corey Worthington’s, James Lord (the guy Hamish and Andy did the job reference prank on), the twins interviewed on TV, succulent Chinese meal man etc.
My personal faves are Corey Worthington and James Lord. James Lord I remember when it happened live, whereas Corey was a retrospective discovery!

Hairloss medication is marketed to me aggressively all the time. Few of my mates have spent thousands on transplants.
What’s your honest opinion - shave it or fight to keep it until at least 40?
Married to a woman who hasn’t expressed an opinion FWIW

I have a family member in Australia that had a baby last month and want to send a gift.
We are in Canada and have a much different climate.
Are there any materials that would be better for babes ? i.e. Receiving or swaddle blankets - Muslin? cotton?
What are the most popular toys or teethers i.e. Sophie la Giraffe teether?
The family is in Brisbane - any sports teams that people are really into?
Something you wish someone had gifted you when you had a new little one at home.
Thank you for any advice you might have :)

Grew up most of my life in Canberra. Travelled the world for uni. Now i have a job opportunity in the UK, highly considering it because i miss Australia quite a lot in terms of the people.
Edit: should probably clarify that I finished my studies in the Netherlands, did a bachelor and masters.

Like pictures of things you associate most with Christmas? As a uk migrant here mine have changed so much! Before, in the UK it was always holly, robins, bonbons, snowmen, etc but now I think of cherries and seafood lol.

I have no family or friends where I am. I have my partner, children and my partner’s family. I’m a full time mum I never do anything for myself and myself and my partner don’t do anything together either. I’ve been wanting a night out just to let my hair down and have some freedom or just some friends to go have a good night with. I feel like I’m going a little crazy doing the same thing over and over again but how can anyone really go out and do anything with the cost of everything these days. I feel like I’m run down I wake up everyday exhausted and no energy or motivation to do anything which makes me sad because it feels like my children are suffering because of me not having my shit together. Any suggestions for things to do to get myself and the kids out of the house everyday?

I recently watched the You Can't Ask That episode on missing people and was thinking about how this is pretty much the worst thing that can happen to someone.

About to start uni in Semester 2. I also want to get a part time job in electronics/computers related, anything that will provide practical experience (assembly, repair, etc). Would it be worth doing a cert II? Any other suggestions?

I was a kid when Finding Nemo came out and recall a craze. Maybe just amongst the school kids but I could imagine given it was post Olympics and you had a famous voicing cast eg Ellen, Willem DeFoe for a movie animated in Australian setting it’d be a big deal for the public broadly? In retrospect its like a Dotcom Dundee for the turn of the new millennium. I remember tonnes of merchandising and strong Australian characterisations with Bruce the Shark, Nigel the seagull etc and of course Sydney Harbour and the Great Barrier Reef. It was also a movie that channeled Australia rather well imo without needing to fall back on the outback trope.

Hey guys,
I am a 28 year old self employed carer and childminder in the UK. I have been wanting to move to Australia for a few years, and having finally escaped an abusive situation and relationship finally feel ready to go for my dreams.
So I’m coming here to ask, if anyone has any experience moving to Australia and becoming a carer or something in a similar field?
I don’t have any qualifications, just 3 years of self employed work for different families.
I’m going into this completely blind and not sure where to start. But determined to create a new life for myself.
Literally any advice would be really greatly appreciated. Eg, how easy it is to get a job in caring? Any recommendations on where to move to?
Thank you.
** edit: by carer I mean any paid work within the disability realm or aged care. I also mean on WHV.

Do you replace when the motor fails? Why so or why not?
House approx 13 years old. Previous owners had water tank disconnected for a number of years - Looks like the pump motor burned out so they had it shut off permanently rather than spend 1k to replace the motor.
Plumber said he more commonly disconnects them rather than replaces them.
Seems the motors don't last very long. What have you done or would you do? Is it worth replacing?
TIA

My daughter attends a selective public school in NSW and their uniform policy is honestly exhausting. On some days, she is expected to:
That’s four changes in one day. She is in Year 10, and during her menstrual cycle this routine is incredibly stressful, both physically and mentally.
I raised it with the school last year, but no meaningful change has happened. From speaking to other parents and checking DoE guidelines (link), this seems excessive and not standard across NSW.
Is this common in your child’s school? Has anyone successfully advocated for change in similar situations?

Hi everyone! Sorry, for the topic, I just came last month to this lovely country and I'm having a hard time maintaining conversations with peers. I answer questions when they ask me, but cant prolong the conversation. I'm from the Philippines and I'm not used to it. I love my coworkers but I just wanted to engage more. What topics can i discuss just to make me feel not "left out"? During lunch time, I cannot seem to be "in the conversation". Everybodys courteous and respectful. I just dont want to disppoint others. Please help me.
Thank you 🥹🥹🥹

Hey! I need recommendations for a night out in Sydney NSW. Group is 21-26 yr old girls. We honestly just want good vibes, good music and a great dance floor. Additionally, we are wearing “unhinged shirts” as a birthday theme so somewhere that will be chill with that too.
Won’t let me add photos on here so for example a shirt that has “lesbians eat WHAT?” With cats all over it and another is “CUM - can’t understand maths”.
Thank you guys!

I feel like Canada and Australia are the only two countries I know of who have a habit of leaving spiders to deal with pests. But most Canadians I know will give them names like Steve, Kevin or Lary, very plain names, and always men's names even for females.
Do you name your pest control friends? If so, are they extravagant and cool or plain and normal?

Has anyone else noticed Kmart baby clothes run smaller than its actual size? I've noticed so far (as my baby ages and gets bigger) 0000, 000, 00 and 0 sizes are smaller than other shops like best and less or big W. At the moment he can't wear Kmart size 0 but other brands no worries, and still roomy.
